I know it will always be 'Sydney paid three 1st round picks for Curnow', but the 2027 pick really needs to be considered as a separate transaction.

If bids for King and Carmichael, and maybe Kyle, all come inside 30, we were always going to have to trade something decent out to get the extra points.

If Curnow fires, the 3 academy boys turn into top liners and we win a flag or three, this trade period will go down as the greatest by any club in the history of the AFL.

I sense this trade period might light the fire in the belly’s of some of our players next year, had a feeling a few of our players intentionally/unintentionally were sitting back very comfortable with their long term contracts, will miss Will and Ollie and hope for the best for them (except against us) but changes we’re desperately needed, if it doesn’t work out, so be it, at least we gave it a good shot, the best thing is I’ve got passion back for my team

Yep so likely to go with 38 unless some academy players slip to rookies then we could do 37 +1 rookie

Lynch didn't have Curnow's injury history and was only a free agent though. Tigers didn't need to mortgage their future to get him.

Makes you wonder what we have been doing with our contracts. Yet the Lions can add Allen and Draper to an already stacked line-up. I hear there's a lot of nice farms just past Ipswich being given away

Lions is more when you have guns at 20 you underpay them by $500k relative to their value.

Times that by all ashcrofts and others it’s like $1.5m in underpayment because they are young…..

A few have mentioned Harry Kyle has Dawson like traits. Imagine if they both became as good? I'm hoping we take Mcnamara in the rookie draft. I watched the tiktok series about the academy and was very impressed with him. Looks like he's not as talented but has resilience and is a hard worker. Reminds me of Brett Kirk.

This is true, but they should be as well prepared to walk in and hit the ground running sa they can be.

I wonder if there is any correlation between the AFL integrity unit sniffing around Geelong and them not being able to do what seemed like a simple deal for Marshall?

I think other clubs are just begining to realise they are not here to supply Geelong, Pies, Hawks with what they want. Years past Roos, St Kilda and Essendon would have folded and given the "destination" clubs what they wanted.

Hawks and Geelong missing their targets was just amazing to watch.

Should be Charlie's time in the spotlight but all the focus is on the trades that didn't happen.

Maybe not a bad thing if you don't want the attention but kind of a shame that one of the biggest signings since Franklin doesn't really get his spotlight. Maybe he doesn't want it but should be a highlight for the club.

And that's the very healthy way to look at it. Of course it can all go pear shaped, but considering we were all begging for major list changes, our wishes have been granted and we need to give the club and recruiters the benefit of the doubt.
At the very least, no one can say, if Big Cox manages to snare a flag or two, that he did it with Longmire's team, he has most definitely put his own stamp on it.

It’s no Gold Coast 2023…. But prior to this it’s been one-offs (mills/heeney/blakey)

A few reflections:

1. I reckon this is the first draft where teams stopped overvaluing draft picks (enabling trading of future future picks didn’t hurt) and clubs and players let each other know that they are willing to enforce their contracts.

2. I’m happy with our drafting overall. I think most on here earlier this year would have said that we should target a KPF, defender and a small forward - while thinning our outside stock. The only thing missing was the dynamic midfielder. The price from Carlton was high but fair for Curnow. I wish Hayward and Florent all the best - both great fellas who gave their all.

3. I’m also delighted that Geelong missed their targets and that Essendon and Hawthorn had a Barney over Merrett.

The 2 main clubs that have been successfully indulging in forgoing draft picks for trades are Geelong and Collingwood. Both of whom can offer " special" inducements for top tier older players.

Most clubs can't offer these inducements.So I'm not sure how well that strategy will go

And for the record - I am on the Cox train. I’m not 100% confident but I respect his right to make his mark on the team and look forward to seeing how it goes.
