I got told he wanted to leave as he was homesick. Port told him it could get done but it would be ugly. Has signed on for 2 years with the intention of coming home but he understands ports future with nga/academy products. Crows were never in the frame and used them as leverage. This info came from one of his junior coaches….
I got told the same thing from a friend of a player at the club

Zak talking to afl.com.au on his contract talks with the club. Worth a listen.

How bloody refreshing is it to hear a bloke just honestly say he hasn't made up his mind.

Instead of the constant platitudes about how they're fully committed right up until they disappear.

Money talks. But hopefully we can match any offer. And force a trade if he still wants to leave
I'm really not convinced he will decide on money, I think he wants flags. He doesn't want to be at a club that's going through a rebuild and will sit bottom 4 for the next 3 years. Its up to Carry to prove that that isn't us.

The money Port have offered is huge, i'm pretty sure Twomey said we have offered him the biggest deal the game has ever seen, we aren't going to lose him over dollars.

The fact he hasn't signed it yet is the concern, people keep saying what has changed since last year, what has changed is we've gone all in and offered him the deal of a life time, clearly we would rather him commit sooner rather than later. The fact that he hasn't and i don't think there is more money to be made by holding out and it even could potentially cost him if he has a serious injury or concussion this year normally means more often than not that they are going.

I know there are exceptions to the rule like NWM, but that wasn't a hard commit that was a soft commit, probably like Butters last contract.

I've pretty much come to terms with him leaving. Unless he signs with us i don't think anything he says or does can convince me otherwise.

He's always said and decision to move will be based on football decisions. We offered this contract to him after we'd already confirmed that the coaching group would change. So of course Butters would want to look at how the new coaching group is going before making any long term commitment. He wouldn't want to be stuck here if Head Coach Carr was a complete utter mess that the players make. So he'd stick around to see. And having the final year of his existing contract fall into that works well for him.

I still think its highly likely that Bergman leaves at the end of his current contract. His fiancé is Victorian and moving near to family will be a massive pull for support if they start having kids. Especially since Miles is also Victorian and doesn't have family in SA.

It's seems to be more of a geographical decision over a football decision. If Port was located in Melbourne we aren't even having this debate, he would've signed.

Hence why it becomes a football decision. If he can see a future at Port for success, then he will stay. Otherwise he will exercise his right to go home. Its really not rocket surgery.

It is a smart move on his part. Call it what you want, rebuild, transition, whatever - there is a lot of unknown.

If Football is genuinely his driving motivation, he will want to see what Carr brings before he makes up his mind. If we end the season bottom 4, then he will probably be on his way out. If we scrape finals, and knowing what we have coming through next season via NGA/F-S etc et - he will probably stay.

If I were in his position and football was my motivator, I wouldn't be signing till at least halfway through the season, if not a bit later.

Butters is currently looking in the mirror every morning thinking WTF.

“Why haven’t I looked like this for the last four years?”

I’ve gone from having serious doubts about Carr to being completely sold already.

Butters is in a pretty good place.

I am with you, purely because he is the absolute antithesis of the the previous one we were subject to! Looking forward to seeing the impact that this has on butters through this year.

There’s also no reason for him to sign from a self interest point of view. We could implode this year which is terrible for him if he re-signs. If he wants to go home the club he likes may implode (see Dan Houston). He might as well hold off and see how the season pans out. It’s his big career contract so he’d want all the facts.

I wish Zac put the burner on the club years ago, before Stinkleys extensions. Get rid of this bozo, or I’m GTFO.

Josh has said all along that it is up to the club to create an environment that Zak wants to be a part of for the future, that’s the best thing they can do, and not just for Zak. I still think that if Ken was still here and we were looking at one or more years of the same-old, Zak would be gone. Zak is all about football success and if he can see that it's a real possibility under the new regime, that’s our best shot at keeping him.
