Adelaide tears in their review thread about the umpiring is the best.

No mention of Darcy having his arms chopped about 6 times in the match for no free?
There were some howlers as usual but the net effect was probably about zero. We got quite a few marginal calls that I thought might have been square-ups for earlier missed ones.

That's not ideal though and not how you want the game umpired. It's a bad sign when you are constantly noticing the umpiring errors. A good test is to watch a non-WB game as a neutral and see if it's the same.

It's such a tough gig for umpires every week. So hard to get the calls right when the rules keep changing every year and some rules get emphasised while others (such as kicking in danger or disputing a decision) hardly ever get penalised any more. I presume they are acting under instructions in that regard.

1/2 time break we lead and yet Richutto interviews and Adelaide player of course

Can't believe the shocking umpiring decisions so far resulting in Adelaide goals

Some simple changes continuing to pay off big time.

...

Bevo has obviously had his fair share of insane decisions good and bad, you’d probably say being experimental is one of his best/worst and defining traits…Ironically going back to a more basic approach is exactly what we needed. Defend as a team. Tackle harder. Don’t be cute at team selection. All boxes ticked really.

...
That's a fascinating take. I'm trying to think of how many tactical/structural changes he's toyed with since 2016 (after they banned third man up) have been genuine winners. I'd appreciate it if people could list a few.

I know he's had his share of positional successes for individual players (Dale, Naughton, Lobb, Richards to name a few) as well as some failures. Most coaches have their share of those. But how many of his tactical innovations have been ongoing successes? I'm struggling...

My working hypothesis is that since the pressure went on the Board a few years ago and they brought in a raft of new assistant coaches, Bevo has gradually come to trust and listen to them. And to allow them a greater role. The result is that he's probably a better and more relaxed coach than when he was trying to do everything himself. If I'm right then it's credit all round - to the Board, the Assistants and to Bevo himself. We're starting to see the results.

Freijah - Pick 45
Jaques - Pick 29
Davidson - Pick 51
JoD - Cat B
Buku - Cat B
Sellwood - Mid-season draft
Baker - SSP
Bramble - SSP

Just insane value

Here is how premiership lists are assembled.

You can have elite players and a bunch of high draft picks but you need to pick the eyes out of late round/rookie drafts to win a flag.

I was wondering if Ah Chee will get cited for his hit on Jaques. Yes he spoiled the ball but the clear intent was also to go right through a skinny kid from behind with no awareness that the hit was coming. He could easily have spoiled that without using his airborne hip and shoulder in the back of the player. A free kick every day of the week in my book.

There used to be a thing called Unduly Rough Play. It probably doesn’t exist in the rule book any more but that’s what it was.

I fully expect they’ll say “nothing to see here“ but it certainly wasn’t a good look.

Anyway a 1-2 game suspension would only be symbolic. Looks like Ah Chee will be out a lot longer than that with his groin / hamstring strain.

Huge respect for Jaques in dealing with all that and continuing to play an important part in those last few minutes.
Nah cmon that was tough and fair everything we love about afl you go back with the flight you run the risk this ain’t foosball

The thing about the Buku story is that it's been a long, slow burn with so many ups and downs over a long period of time.

You hear the media commentary, with this sort of racial undertones, (thankfully not from Dogs fans) that's completely off the mark. That he's young, raw, athletic Sudanese kid who hasn't played much footy in his life but has talent that can be "unlocked" through an AFL environment.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Put aside the fact that he's Sudanese, and there have been some other Sudanese players who played limited junior football:

He played footy since primary school, played club and Western Jets and Dogs NGA footy for years, played for Vic Metro in U18.

Wasn't good enough to be drafted by any club but got a list spot thanks to Cat B (that he's from our backyard means we're allowed to use an extra list spot on him).

First 3 years in the system on the verge of being delisted (even despite the fact we can't pick up another draft pick to replace him if we did) and scrapes by to play 1, very poor game.

Year 4/5 - keeps his career on an AFL list going with a move up forward and kicking bags at AFL level, but his play style as a forward isn't suited to our AFL roles and only plays a handful of games

Year 6: plays most of the season down back but is marginal in value and on the verge of being dropped every game

Year 7: Shifts back and forward in a team lacking key position depth when we don't have any AFL capable defenders and our young star 3rd tall forward goes AWOL, but still plays some VFL anyway.

So here we are in year 8. Shifted back and forth in different positions, barely hanging onto a AFL list spot to start his career, and a player who has had to slow burn and fight every year he's been an AFL player. He's not young, he shouldn't have much development left - he's a elite talent pathway kid, a U18 Vic Metro player who is about to turn 27 without ever cementing himself as an AFL player at all.

Until now. Until 3 oustanding, 3 career best games in a row. Showing the years of hard work, learning professionalism, playing different roles for the team, being a role model for the community, requesting a trade but the team not following through.

There is absolutely nothing in his football backstory to date to suggest he should be randomly finding his mojo at age 26, nearly 27. He's been in the system. He's only had the one coach at AFL level. We had 8 years to know the type of player we had.

And he's won us a critical game with what may be a BOG performance down back.

Huge win, showed great maturity and toughness to fight back after coughing up the lead late.

So many impressed. Buku wow, best game i've seen him play off the top of my head. I think he had another good one against the Blues a few years back, but his composure and intercept game was huge tonight, and he spoiled at the right moments. We lose that without him.

Naughty great, Bont is Bont, Ed and Libba did their usual thing in the middle, Freijah enormous and damaging, Bailey Williams huge all night, Budarick, Jaques and Sellwood have completely turned our back line around. And Baker was a match winner, what a turn around from him.

Couple small negatives, West has had a quiet start to the season by his standards but I back him in to get back to his best. Hynes wasn't great and seems a little out of position being in the difficult HFF role, but that was probably to be expected. Davidson was pretty poor for 3 quarters, was good late and never stopped running hard, but he may be in the selection bubble for next game, especially if Arty, Treloar and Dolan are pushing for selection.

One last mention about our defensive game before going to bed

We must be working so much harder on the transition. We’ve seen in the past against some of the good teams (Hawthorn a regular example of it) where they are able to chip it around with uncontested marks and then we get out worked on the spread and allow outlets. We rarely let that happen tonight, especially in the first half, they’d go side to side but then we closed the next forward option and they’d be forced back and we’d keep the pressure on
