List Mgmt. Welcome Jobe Shanahan (Pick 30, 2024 National Draft)

North traded up to not get this bloke.
Richmond opted instead for Harry Armstrong, who finished yesterday with zero disposals.

Thank you very much, other clubs. Pick 30. **** off.

Jobe got the boots on Bounce for Mark of the Week.
Lock him in for Mark of the Year.
Funny they waited around for the Dees to sing their song before they put the show on. They don’t give the Eagles the same service.

In fairness to Richmond they only had <checks notes> 7 picks before Jobe went off the board.

2024 draft
14 Jonty Faull Tigers
21 Luke Trainor Tigers
23 Harry Armstrong Tigers
27 Matt Whitlock Norf
28 Thomas Sims Tigers
30 Jobe Shanahan Eagles

So in terms tall options, Tigers had 4 options prior to our pick and Norf 1.

Norf copped a heap of criticism for giving away their F1 (but getting Tigers F2 back) and jumping back into the draft. If they had taken Jobe, I suggest the Norf list team would be more than vindicated. Probably lauded.

We did very well in our 2023 selection of Archer, 2024 selection of Jobe and 2025 selection of Cooper.

The crazy thing about his non-selection at draft is the fact he was highly rated, expected to be a first round pick with Cal locking him in at Richmond's 14th pick.

Shanahan wasn't plucked from obscurity, he was a known quantity, the only thing that could go against him was not being from Victoria?

What do you think about the rumours of Richmond leaving Shanahan to us as part of the Baker deal?

We could have traded our R2 pick for Baker instead of pick 14 and still end with the same result- Shanahan and Baker because there’s every chance had we held 14, we would’ve drafted Shanahan

Will forever be thankful to Richmond, having arguably fleeced us for Baker, returning the favour by ignoring Shanahan existed

I, for one, was an advocate of Shanahan at 14 as the strategy all along.
I thought when we didn't select him initially that other clubs wouldn't be stupid enough to leave him on the board until our next pick.
I'm very thankful to be wrong on this latter point.

Unlikely. If Richmond didn’t take him, Sydney were in the mix.

Shanahan Sliding to our pick in the 2nd round was a remote prospect no one would have considered pre-draft.

Richmond didn’t take Shanahan because they preferred Armstrong- who was higher rated (at least as far as twomeys form guide goes) by time the draft rolled around.

Obviously Tigers thought Shanahan/Armstrong were a bit too similar so went with Trainor (a great pick), Faull and Sims.

The knock on Shanahan pre-draft appears to be some clubs felt his follow up work wasn’t up to scratch, which is something he could improve, but perhaps overblown by recruiters?

In retrospect it looks like a losing strategy, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles.

They ****ed up, definitley not a case of throwing us a bone.

Mini did say in his draft year he can look laconic which is why they debuted him so late

Jarrad Schofield said something in his BackChat interview regarding Jobe that he wasn't doing a certain something in the WAFL, I can't remember what it was, whether it was second efforts, or a little more defensive pressure, I can't remember what he said, but then he said as soon as he got called up to AFL level he was doing everything that they were looking for him to do in the WAFL and that they in hindsight should've called him up much sooner :tearsofjoy:

Footy clubs (including their recruiters) are packed with old school meatheads who will definitely mark down a bloke with a laid-back personality who doesn’t act like a lunatic on meth when he’s playing.

Shanahan is every bit what we'd hoped Tony Notte was 18 years ago, a great mark with exceptional hands.
