Martin was not in the "lock" section. He was in the contenders section, meaning...
...the hits, all of it. The young ones are ready. They push, and the team grows stronger.”
But not all are untouched by the grind. LukeShuey, their captain, falls. A leg injured. They scan, they wait.
Through it all, the team moves forward. The veterans train apart, pacing themselves, wise in...
LukeShuey won the rising star in his third year having played 6 games in his first two years on the list.
Kai Lohmann just starred in a flag after playing 8 games in his first two years on the lions list.
Plenty of examples of the opposite as well with players who burned brightly early but...
Reckon thats spot on MM3, think I made the same comparison earlier in the year too. Shuey tidied up his disposal by the end of his career to the point where it was borderline elite but his 1 wood was still always bursting out of stoppage and overlap run in the middle. Prime Shuey would be a...
It should be noted LukeShuey also had to deal with glandular fever which caused him to miss most of a season. Basically a ready made player when he started stringing games together, because he had a couple of pre-seasons under his belt.
I think Gov also didn't even debut until after 3 years on...
Kennedy was #4. We got lucky with Shuey and Yeo. I don't think anyone is writing them (the kids) off, but there's a difference between kids who make it, or even kids who make very good players, and flag sides. If you have that core of elite players, it's easier for kids to step and play to...
Agree on JK and Yeo to a lesser extent.
Shuey not so much, missed most of the 1st year with family bereavement.
Was almost a new recruit in 2011, playing a full year in 11 and going at 17 disposals per game plus average of 1 goal a game (better than Harley at 18 and .5).
2012 was similar and...
Think some forget that our past A-graders like LukeShuey, Josh Kennedy and Elliot Yeo - key cogs of a flag side - weren't exactly ripping up the competition and winning individual accolades when they were kids.
Of course not all of them will make it, but it's foolish to write them off now.
Im pretty sure a large part of why we dont lose players is because we carefully pick them with the homesickness thing in mind. Like we did in 2022 for example with 2 for 8+14.
Wouldnt be surprised if the little pick slides we do so often are done so we dont have to reach so much to get the guy...
...anyone?
By my calcs the last flag side had 10 players from outside WA, including Jack Redden and Nathan Vardy who chose to join WC. LukeShuey, Will Schofield, Shannon Hurn have all retired and still live in Perth and maintain involvement with the club. Being drafted to WA isn't like being...
Schofield is very experienced as a senior assistant and I guess Luke Webster has been around for a while. Shuey is the only real green coach and obviously McWalter is new to head coach.
I don’t think there is any”plan” it’s just words to keep the wolves at bay.
The best plan I’ve heard is the one about trading our future first to Richmond but I don’t think our list team would be thinking about it because they’ve made a commitment to Warner.
...with that and our F1.
Sure, for a pick in the 10s, we might get Jarrod Brander. But we could also get Darren Glass or Daniel Kerr or LukeShuey. Beau Waters or Shannon Hurn. A new Sheed or Duggan even would improve our list.
Yeah, that trade looks crap, but we won't know for a couple of...
Yeah im still not that excited about this years top end players overall, i think your description of the above players are pretty accurate and along the lines of what i think as well…
I’m more excited about keeping our current picks which are in a good spot to pickup a couple of talented...
I'd also trade up for Jagga. The one thing you forgot to mention about his game is his consistency. He may not damage you with his efficiency and penetration, but he doesn't need to. It'll be death by a thousand cuts, or in this case 30+ week in week out.
He's also very quick and agile similar...
Given it's pick 3 and not pick 2, we can't guarantee that - so it would be a draft night only proposition. But WC unlikely to go for that. If they trade down, it's to get a pick for the Baker trade.
...little bit light of frame too so his contest work may suffer against AFL bodies for a few years while he builds his strength.
- Plays like LukeShuey.
Lalor - Powerful, classy and arguably the most damaging player in the draft. Highly injury prone and is coming off a major hamstring tear to...
Clubs are getting better at drafting
Young players are more professional and developed better in Jnr’s
Look at the pick numbers of the 30 best young players in the comp
Almost pointless to talk about 10-15 years ago as if everything is the same
A second year player just won the norm smith...
So why don't you make exactly the same argument but say Richmond has to lighten up? Pick 11, Pick 18, who GAF? Clearly they do matter to both clubs or the deal would have happened by now.
