    Well that it wouldn't have changed or evolved, would it? My point is you could still have a healthy AFL today with that many teams (12). The key to success is not 'more more more'. It's a lot more nuanced than that.

    I don't know about grow, necesarily - change or evolve might be a better way to put it, because the world around the AFL is doing same. But I'm not sure growing (in the sense of getting bigger) is the real imperative.

    It's still a similar case here in Canberra. The ACT Government forked out $23m for 3+1 games at Manuka per year for ten years, and in return 'Canberra' is on the back of the jumper. Odds are there would be no 'zone' relationship if it couldn't be built on the club's funded presence here.

    But 'Perth' is Perth-centric (I know, I know...) while 'WA' is generally seen as the domain of rep teams. And 'West Coast' has started to gain broader acceptance as a WA sporting thing. Eagles, Waves, Fever, now maybe Pirates... the Eagles will always be the default association with it, though...
