    Windows 10: General Comments/Positives/Gripes etc

Yep, had to reinstall that (fortunately Mum didn't have a lot of extra programs, overall) but you can d/l the setup files for stuff like that ahead of time. Definitely worth it if you're having serious issues... dunno about just for a tidy-up though.

    Windows 10: General Comments/Positives/Gripes etc

Post upgrade, my mum's Dell desktop was having all sorts of troubles with the Start Menu and Edge. The 'Reset this PC' option has done a remarkably painless yet effective job of clearing out all the junk that survived the upgrade from Win7 and taking us to nice pure Win10, and it's now...

    Windows 10: General Comments/Positives/Gripes etc

Both my parents' machines have had issues with the start menu failing in Win 10 at various times. May have to try a clean install to get them some stability. Mine on the other have been fine. Albeit I have switched a lot of things off and don't use Cortana, the Store, a MS account... so in some...

    Television. Which one?

Compare them side by side in-store, preferably with a SD broadcast signal as well as whatever HD demo loop they usually have running. If you can, also get the staff to let you play with the remote and the on-screen display - each manufacturer has their own quirks for how they present stuff...

GM's long awaited gaming PC battlestation.......

That is quite a sexy pile of thingies and doodads. Sexier still when I think about how many parts for my current gaming PC were bought in 2009 :( Overrated IMO, unless you have a particular game that you really need to drag every last speck of performance out of the system for. Put your time...

    Wifi at home

Tell me exactly what you've got right now... not only what you've got that does connect to the net, but also the stuff that you want to be able to connect to each other and to the net using this new wifi setup.

    Wifi at home

You're still going to have the same restrictions on speed and download cap... this will just allow multiple devices to use that connection at once.

    Wifi at home

Instead of sticking your wireless broadband dongle straight into your computer, you'll stick it into a compatible wireless router. You'll then need a wireless network adapter for your computer, which allows the computer to pick up the network signal that the router is pumping around the house...

    WinAmp headed for digital heaven

http://tech.slashdot.org/story/13/11/20/1958213/winamp-shutting-down-on-december-20 AOL is finally killing off WinAmp, as of 20 December 2013. This little program has been an essential application on my computers for over a decade. I don't use it as anything more than a player (MediaMonkey...

Dear Programmers: Please don't do this.

Numbers and letters? Fine. Insisting on uppercase or special characters is annoying. 9 characters minimum amplifies the annoyance. Not a previous password even moreso. And 'no two consecutive characters from...' is just stupid.

Internet keeps dropping and trying to reconnect (Windows 7)

If there's anyway you can get a look at the log files of your router, it might give you a hint as to what's causing the dropout.

Have you ever order food over the internet?

Agree with the above re the prices and sizings being awkward. There's also no information about payment options/systems. Is this up to you as restaurant owner or does this system come pre-packaged with a solution for that? Can you order without logging in and creating a user account? ...why...

    Windows 8 is looking interesting!!

Not really seeing a great driver for me to move from W7 to W8 on my home machine at this stage. Mind you, I tend to use my desktop and phone and tablet all as quite distinct units so cross-platform functionality really doesn't add much value for me. (and I did also hang onto XP for aaaaages...

Avast (free version) is more than sufficient for my needs. Unless you have some pretty serious anti-virus and security needs, I'd thoroughly recommend it.

    Samsung Galaxy S3

Ditto Windows. And the number of people still hanging onto Win XP and older versions of MS Office should tell Samsung something about how long they can commerically sustain this breakneck release schedule they're on. Eventually people are going to get tired of the constant upgrading game and...

    Samsung Galaxy S3

Is it just me or is the smartphone market getting way too deep into "upgrade for no good reason" territory? What proportion of the market seriously needs the capabilities the S3 offers that the S and S2 didn't? I doubt I even use a fraction of all the natty features of my S.

    Broadband

It will depend on the ISP, but my guess is you won't find anyone who does that. Direct debit is the nearest you'll likely get in terms of convenience.

    Ice Cream Sandwich

I have a homebrew ICS 4.0.3 on my Galaxy S. It's neat to have the new interface and whatnot, but I'm not sure it's a massive improvement considering I primarily use my phone as a phone.

    Tablet Music Plan

This seems...overly complex. Unless there's some very specific functionality you're looking for out of iTunes, "iPod and some cable/adaptors" sounds like a much simpler solution.

Wiping a PC clean without re-installing Windows

Well, for starters, I've never heard of anyone paying more or less for a machine on the basis of how much of the hard drive is currently unused, given that when they own the machine they can delete whatever the hell they want to make use of the drive's full capacity. Having said that...the...

You should consider it - it makes dealing with annoyance like this SOOOOOO much easier. In fact, I *recommend* having other people on hand who are obliged to deal with such crap.

    Tablets

I have a 7" Galaxy Tab (the earlier model), and there is a huge difference between a tablet and a smartphone - the extra room on the screen makes everything a bit easier/nicer to do and organise.
