    Rules Holding the ball

This is correct, but will they have the courage to stick to their guns?

Umpiring Free kicks & free kick ladders

Well, in Ted Whitten's last game, the umpire paid 112 free kicks, so EJ would probably be wondering if they've lost the peas out of their whistles.

Removing interpretations and confusion from the game

Regarding the holding the ball non-call on Ben Keays late in the game, I'm just wondering what part of the word "immediately" is ambiguous or requires interpretation. There was a similar non-call on Fyfe in the later game.

    Over umpiring

“Under-umpiring” over the last 20 odd years and the tactics it’s allowed to evolve is a main reason why we have congestion in the first place.
  6. Mr Ripper

Does this still count as a throw?

Umpire was right on the spot. Knowing how they like to muddy the waters with their interpretations and over-complicate things, my guess is the thinking is along the lines of 'Shaw took the ball off Mumford rather than Mumford handing it to Shaw, so play on...' Of course it should be a...

    Deliberate rushed behind.

Not surprising when the interpretation of the law is tangential to the actual law and requires added layers of interpretation that inconsistency abounds and everyone is confused. Just apply the thing as it's written, otherwise change the law. And the DRB law is far from being Robinson Crusoe...

    Deliberate rushed behind.

The deliberate rushed behind law itself has no reference at all to being under pressure; only as to whether there is any doubt about the intention of the defending player. In Firrito's case, there clearly wasn't.

    Blaming Umpires For A Loss

    I'd prefer fewer infringements.

    Whistle Happy Umpires

And free flowing games they would have been, too, compared to the stop-start game of today. Paying free kicks promotes open play.

    In plain Sight.

That's exactly the point of Harry Beitzel's famous '50 frees a game' ideal; not "blow your whistle less", but "ffs, players, stop infringing so much!".

    In plain Sight.

The latitude given to players in modern footy is almost farcicle at times - yet many still complain about games being over-umpired. Amazing!

    The Matt Stevic files

Dunn had him in a bear hug. Ump spot on to give Cloke the free. If only they paid it the other 99 times out of 100.

    Shepherding out of marking contests

^^^ Always gets me this: player A grabs player B; player B automatically responds by grabbing player A. Why doesn't player B just play the ball and (one would hope) get the free kick?
  17. Mr Ripper

When were the incorrect disposal / HTB rules abolished?

Half the time they're laying across the ball-player's back, anyway, which should (IMO) warrant an in the back free.

*nods* We have actually speculated on this idea on the Brisbane board.

I'm never one to inflate the collective tyres of the umpiring fraternity, but that was a great call.

    6.4 seconds

Mike Fitzpatrick only had it 15 seconds back in 1981 before umpire Robinson (I think) took it off him for time wasting. FTR. :)
  23. Mr Ripper

    Dropping the ball

Prior opp: ball must be legitimately disposed of. No prior: an attempt is good enough. I think the problem is what a legitimate 'attempt' actually is. Yeah, there's too much latitude atm. Incorrect disposal is nearly as much a problem as non-tackles and illegal tackles being rewarded with...

AFL HQ discussing the possibility of Netballing the footy. (Zoned field)

Wouldn't be averse to trialing something along these lines (pardon the pun), but only for stoppages - well, it already happens at centre bounces, would just be an extension of that.

    The Prior opportunity farce

Great post! Congestion and multiple ball-ups really started to impact the game (and detract from the spectacle) around about 1996. PO was introduced in 1996. Join the dots. Actually, the stoppage-a-thons became such an issue the following season that about half-way through, Collo...

One thing not mentioned, the UMPIRING!!

Wonder what the big hairy cat made of it. Reckon I saw half-a-dozen Mooney-Gwilt jobs go unnoticed.

    Umpiring so far

Never seen them so stone-cold on holding the ball in round 1. Usually takes a good month for that rule to be discarded. ;)
