South Africa would beg to differ. With considerable justification.

Yeah I'm not too bothered about the whole indexation thing. That will happen soon enough. Most likely with the next Liberal government. The taxing of unrealised gains however is an absolute shambles. It's a policy that I'm sure looked fantastic to a progressive (socialist?) government when they...

I think Andrew Wilkie's original election victory is a classic example of what your comment here, and also of our electoral system focusing more on electing a "least unpopular" candidate ahead of a "most preferred" candidate. I was voting in that electorate at the time, and if I recall...

You just described me basically. I voted Labor for the first time in my life federally on Saturday. I like Albo, in the sense that I'd be happy to have a beer with him. Even tho he's a bunnies supporter 🤮 I think Chalmers has done a decent job as treasurer. If I ever get $3million in super this...

That's basically exactly what they should do. Attempt to squeeze Labor into a shrinking political gap between themselves and the Greens, giving themselves a better opportunity to garner the votes of those many disaffected Australians in the middle of the spectrum. Basically as Morrison did in...

Absolutely. Ultimately the biggest winner from our election has been the importance of compulsory voting. It's the reason the extreme politics we're seeing in so much of the world has if anything backfired spectacularly here. For this reason it's obvious to me that the Liberals simply must...

I had a sensational Thai green curry in Richmond after the game. There's a strip of about 4 or 5 of them on Victoria Street. They were all full but this one was empty when I rocked up for some reason. It was full by the time I finished. I Spicy it's called. 5 stars.

I don't watch any news on TV any more. I have the Guardian and News apps on my phone. They send me notifications when things happen. If they both send me the same thing I know "the thing" probably happened. Then it's a matter of interest to see how they both spin the same events, and the truth...

I must admit I've always thought it's a bit of an oddity of American politics that they put all their eggs into the basket of trying to be the president. And then if they lose they just sort of fade away to nothing. Like, Hillary Clinton didn't stick around to be "opposition leader" after 2016...

Yep. They should have been made to forfeit their matches, like other teams were at the 1996 and 2003 World Cups. The tail is wagging the dog.

That's what I mean. Grovelling to his face. Then do whatever you like elsewhere. Trump's too busy out playing golf or whatever to read what other people are or aren't saying about him when he's not around.

I think the general argument I've read today (not just from him), is that Zelensky should have gone there prepared to grovel at Trump's feet, showering him with thanks and praise. Would it have been unedifying for a world leader? Yes. Sickening? Definitely. Cringeworthy? Absolutely...

I'm not sure 😂 I think what I'm trying to say is that just because a person's views on topic X may be absolutely disgraceful and abhorrent, and you may disagree with them completely, that doesn't necessarily imply by definition that their views on topic Y must also be absolutely disgraceful and...

Attempting to discredit someone via unrelated events and viewpoints is a strategy that hasn't really worked for quite some time. If it did, Hillary Clinton would have won the 2016 election. Jonathan Pie summed it up nicely. (Fair warning: May cause offence, on several levels)

For those who have absorbed all the reports critical of Trump and Vance this morning (like me), and desire a bit of balance, this is worth a read. It's from the News Ltd live blog, and regardless of what your knee jerk reaction to that might be, its attitude towards Trump ever since his...

I went a full 12 months without alcohol in 2021. Heaps Normal was not too bad. Most of the 0% lagers were not great. Perhaps Great Northern 0 the best of them. Peroni easily the worst.

I think this is what he meant by draining the swamp 9 years ago. It took him a while longer than he expected to get all the pieces in the right places, but it looks like he's just about sorted it now.
