Can anybody make any sense of the latest umpiring edict?

Common sense apparently didn't allow you to discern the difference between 360 degrees and the 180 degrees that actually occurred. Nor for that matter did it stop you defending the Osborne marking attempt as unrealistic (surely you haven't seen it given your comment). Unfortunately, it also...

    Prior opportunity after a mark?

That is not an inconsistency at all for one very important reason - when a mark is paid the umpire blows his whistle - the player taking the mark then has the opportunity to go back behind the mark and take a kick unhindered or to risk his luck and play on. If the ball is touched the mark is not...

    Prior opportunity after a mark?

Who the hell came up with that interpretation??? They must be absolute geniuses down there in the AFL umpiring department. To the overwhelming majority of footy fans this would have to be the most ridiculous rule interpretation that exists. A player who has taken a mark or been paid a free...

    Interesting reading

I have also watched a bit of 'old' footy recently - 25 years+ old finals. What I find so interesting is that it was umpired in the exact opposite way from what Tim Lane says in his first few para's. Any player tackled with the ball was basically awarded a free kick against him 95% of the time -...

    Matthew Nicholls (No.15)

If he was a horse he would be shot. The holding the ball decision against Redden 30m out from goal on 3/4 time was so fu@king disgraceful that it beggars belief.

    Matthew Nicholls (No.15)

He has been so bad in the first half tonight, it is actually really embarrassing. I have never seen one half of football so utterly dominated by the utter cr@pness of basically one umpire. Is he the worst in the AFL? If he's not he's sure as hell giving it a good shake.

    Daniel Pratt's deliberate rush through

That's not you is it Giesch? There is a big difference between 'deliberate' (as in deliberate out of bounds) and 'under no pressure'. The second one is a very small subset of the first. I didn't say the umpires themselves have got it wrong, it is how they are directed that will increasingly...

    Daniel Pratt's deliberate rush through

The affect the AFL achieved will be continually eroded over time. No one knows where the line in the sand is between pressure and no pressure. I mean who in the AFL has ever rushed a behind under no pressure - you could argue that there are few and far between examples of that happening. Any...

    Daniel Pratt's deliberate rush through

And that is why it is now turning into cr@p. The longer the rule goes on, the more and more players will just rush behinds like they use to as the umpires won't penalise them. Just like Luke Power did on Saturday night. Stupidity rules the roost.

    Daniel Pratt's deliberate rush through

I agree with most of the posts in this thread. While I initially thought the rule was too harsh, I think most football fans would generally agree that the rule / how it was applied earlier on in the year was a success. Since then, some disputed on-field incidents / and the 'clarification'...

    How do we deter diving?

I agree with the 'fine' idea. It is getting ridiculous. We use to pride ourselves on how footy players were not like soccer players in terms of diving. Problem is that when a player dives or throws up their arms they get rewarded with a b/s free kick at least 3/4 of the time.

Rule change - Now a 50m penalty if tackled after disposal

This rule is being interpreted by some umpires in a ridiculous manner. Already this round I have seen a number of occassions where players are being tackled with the ball, disposing of the ball, and then because the tackle continues (often because the tackler doesn't know the ball is gone)...
