Collapsing, charging with your head - the AFL are to blame for this crisis

It is interesting what the umpires are directed to do, but they don't really have interpret players dropping to their knees or raising an arm. Simplifying the directions I am sure they just say unless a player ducks or drives with their head then any high contact is paid as a free kick against...

    Insufficient Force

Insufficient force is a corruptible cop out used by the MRP when deciding which players to pick on or not pick on each week. Have a look at the Goddard and Rockliff decisions this week (of which about 20 similar incidents happen each and every round). MRP lotto is an absolute joke.

    15 metres

That is a pretty good simple suggestion that could be easily implemented.

Kicking out of bounds on the full - change needed

I agree with the OP. I understand why the rule is currently as it is (because the ball never returns to the field of play). But common-sense tells you that you are in effect rewarding a horrendous kick by paying a thrown-in instead of a free-kick against. You could easily change the rules to...

    Lindsay Thomas on Gary Rohan

That is a bizarre comment about Raines. He actually momentarily had the ball as he slid in body first. The ball just bobbled out of his grasp as he cannoned in to Ablett. To say there is a spate of players deliberately taking out others legs is hysteria. Anyway, the AFL will say the...

    Best Bouncer in the AFL

Matthew Nicholls without doubt. However it is one of my pet hates - that umpires get largely picked by the umpiring department on their ability to bounce the ball rather than their umpiring ability. It is a complete farce. IMHO the bounce should be scrapped completely and the ball thrown up...

    That stupid advantage Rule...

Yeah there were two incidences and both were absolutely atrocious beyond belief. Still cannot believe the fourth quarter one where advantage was paid after we the infringing team had quickly picked up and handballed the ball.

The last game of Razor Ray's career

    Must be dropped.
  9. Last of the Roys

    "He dropped it!"

I don't think you can under the current interpretation, even if the umpires often don't pay it. Deliberately dropping the ball is an incorrect disposal in a tackle, even if you have not had prior opportunity. Whether an umpire pays incorrect disposal or holding the ball doesn't matter. As to...

    "He dropped it!"

I don't think it is about the letter of the law, but how it is interpreted that is often more important in AFL today. I don't think you can deliberately drop the ball when you are being tackled no matter if you have prior opportunity or not. (Just like I don't think you can deliberately drop...

Biggest Umpiring "blunder" of all time

God some of the irrational stuff in this thread is even mind-blowing. Black is an absolute champion footballer and person - what occurred happens a dozen times a match these days, however obviously in a much more subtle manner. God I know I have seen Boomber throw the ball every now and then...

The Jarryd Blair free kick was correct.

Bob_vic I realise you always defend the umpires, and I think a lot of that is correct in terms of umpires aren't necessarily to blame for how they being asked to interpret / pay free kicks (with much of the real blame lying with the interpretations instead). However, this is pretty much...

The Jarryd Blair free kick was correct.

I cannot believe he would stoop to defending this one. Any minor push was completely incidental, it was overwhelmingly just a defender holding his ground. No wonder the footy public generally hate umpires when they are being taught this kind of crap. If anyone needed any more evidence that...

Original Purpose of the Rushed Behind Rule

I think the Tigers were hardly done by under the usual interpretation of the rule / what it was brought in for. However, I would prefer if the AFL did change the interpretation of the rule to pay free kicks in similar circumstances to what happened last night. It should be just an extension...

    Umpires cost Brisbane the game

what planet are you posting from???

    Umpires cost Brisbane the game

Don't agree at all the second one was there. If you pay that, well let's just say Brown would get an extra 150 free kicks a year.

    Umpires cost Brisbane the game

As I posted on our forum, it feels like the greatest injustice in a single game since Fitzroy was robbed in Adelaide (back in 1991 I think).

    AFL constantly changing rules

The AFL asked that question in the context of a debate around bringing in substitutes (IN ADDITION TO THE 4 MAN BENCH) in order to compensate sides who suffer injuries during matches (and are therefore at a disadvantage). The context had nothing to do with limiting rotations. In their survey...

    AFL constantly changing rules

It is bizarre that this very significant rule change has come in to solve a problem that doesn't even exist. We can all admit the 'substitute rule' was not introduced to reduce injuries. That was just the Kremlin's b/s spin that anyone with half a brain can see through. Obviously it is...

Poll and Video: Post game Geelong V St Kilda. Was it a free kick on Mooney?

I agree with you this time Bob. Definite standard in the back that has to be paid 100 times out of 100. It is hard to believe all the carrying on about it given Geelong were given a few dubious decisions to get them back in it in the 3rd quarter. But I guess that is what happens when a free...

    Joel Selwood free kicks

It is not illegal for him (and many others) to try and draw free kicks in such a way. But umpires shouldn't be so easily fooled by players dropping to their knees / going to ground once they are tackled.
  22. Last of the Roys

    Joel Selwood free kicks

I think Joel Selwood is a fantastic player, I would love to have him in my team. But there is no doubt he is great at ducking / falling down during a tackle to win a free kick. Take a look at the article from today's Herald Sun...

AFL in a State of Emergency

The Lions were absolutely royally scr@wed by home town umpiring through-out the game. 24-12 free kicks I believe for a game where the Lions were slightly on top for most of the time. And some of the worst clanger free kicks you will ever see in a game of football. The Brown one - 50/50, but did...

AFL in a State of Emergency

The worst umpired Friday night game I can ever remember. Unfortunately there are some absolutely shocking umpired games that never make it to FTA television every week. The AFL and Gieschen got their just desserts last night. Pity for the rest of us though. The control freaks are out of...

    Unrealistic Leap

He may be quoting from the rule book, but he (by his own admission) did not see the Osborne marking attempt. Therefore his views are largely irrelevant on, IMO, possibly the worst umpiring decision of the year. To be honest, you umpiring defenders are doing yourself a big dis-service when...

I couldn't agree more. Anyone who actually saw this and still tries to defend the decision is trying to defend the indefensible.

AFL: Umpires get 1 in every 6 free kicks wrong

At the moment I think they are not acknowledging nearly as many errors as there actually are. I have heard the AFL / Gieschen make comments that the umpires only make 3-4 mistakes per game. In reality that figure is more like 12. That is one of the biggest gripes I have with Jeff Gieschen and...

Agree 100%. Seriously though, with MRP Roulette, who the **** knows.

The 'running too far rule', has something changed?

The Umpire Nichols one against Adelaide was absolutely hilarious. Did he blink while the guy was bouncing the ball??? (Worst umpire in the universe, so hardly unexpected). Seriously there must have been some sort of directive, and this is what you get. I have seen at least two absolute...

Rules you don't think the majority of players understand

One that always annoys me is that almost every player that gets to kick in from an 'out of bounds on the full' will cross the line without thinking / realising it is immediately play on when they do so. Lots of players stupidly put themselves under pressure doing this.
