Girls academy certainly looks like delivering some decent talent in the next few years. Names to watch: 2025 Kaiya Hides (Wing - Maroochydore) Monique Corrigan (Ruck - Wide Bay/Maroochydore) Jemma Foley (Med Def - Maroochydore) 2026 Molly Ferguson (Mid - Maroochydore) Stella Scott (Mid -...

This whole thing about the Academy "breaking" players seems way overcooked. I played school footy for a decent school in the early 90s and the best 3 players who were all state or district reps and played club footy as well. All finished up playing by the age of 20. More recently I know of 2...

Is playing kids that young good for them at that level? Seems a little young. How many overagers were the Lions playing? Isn't one of the arguments against the academy that they abandon the kids once past draft age?

I've heard the Academy described as more of a finishing school. As it stands in Qld footy, no one system seems equipped to do the job on it's own and I think (from the outside looking in anyway) it's nearly impossible to pinpoint any one training institution as being THE reason an Academy kid...

The first paragraph kind of answers the question coming out of the second: what more could be done? The Lions play these kids in their VFL side. Seems the age-old problem of Qld footy - out of sight out of mind.

The line from Luke Curran used to be "you don't know what we're looking for". I honestly don't know what they're looking for as I've had family members overlloked also. They would have been borderline too but definitely had some dratable traits. Would it be the worst thing to at the least let...

I mean, it's very an imperfect science (or should that be "art") and the Academy staff probably need to tick off a broad range of criteria that people in club land or draft aficionados are probably never going to agree with entirely. 5-10 years ago the criticism was that they weren't casting...

Most QAFL clubs would be playing any academy-level kid at at least reserves level wouldn't they. Bit stiff to put that on the Academy. Would you be willing to name the kids you think are getting passed over?

Qld had a good second half, outworking Vic Country. Our Academy girls were pretty quiet and our best girl was missing in Issy McDonough. Zimmy Hussain was active up forward but a little fumbly. Certainly not alone there though. Laura Roy and Lilly Baker were barely sighted. Chloe Gaunt had some...

Didn't see them, but U16 girls won comfortably 134-13. McIlwain oout of Vic Point kicked 10 goals. Stella Scott, Mia Geere and Molly Ferguson named in best again. U18 boys won 113-31. Haven't heard anything more than that though & PlayHQ is a goddamn nightmare to navigate around.

There's always going to be people unhappy, thinking that their kid didn't get the look-in they thought they should have. I totally get that. I know people whose lad didn't even get a look in in the Academy program who were probably deserving - they can at least debate the pros and cons of the...
