Prediction Elusive Top 4 Now Gone Battle for 8

The results in the home and away season aren't just W/L though; how much we've won and lost by matters too. The fact that we've never been blown away in matches against the other good sides this year is part of the reason our percentage is so good; and if we make finals at the expense of a team...

Coach Luke Beveridge and his on-field coaching.

In previous years we've been capable of beating the best sides, yet have inexplicably lost to teams at the bottom end of the ladder every now and then. This year we seem to have reversed course on both fronts: we're incapable of beating the top teams, but dominate the cellar dwellers. I don't...

    Autopsy AFL 2025 Rd 18 - Dogs v Crows - Sat July 12th 1:20pm AEST (Marvel Stadium)

To compare records across the same opponents: vs. Brisbane: Adelaide won by 5 points (home, Adelaide Oval) Bulldogs lost by by 21 points (Gather Round, Norwood Oval) vs. Collingwood: Adelaide lost by 10 points (away, MCG) Bulldogs lost by 6 points (home, MCG) vs. Fremantle: Adelaide lost by...

Who will be better in 2025? Fremantle or Western Bulldogs?

It didn't help that the team he was playing for at the time got knocked out in the semi-finals either.

Review Dogs comfortable winners over North 134 - 85

Not a medical doctor, but from the replays I thought it looked like LDU probably got concussed by hitting Richards' shoulder rather than the fend itself, which seemed like a pretty glancing blow.

    2025 Rolling ALL-Australian Team

I thought I was pretty clear in explaining where the side came from: It's not my preferences or personal view, it's purely based on the Wheelo ratings. They don't have any Collingwood players listed in the top 40 players, so I didn't list any Collingwood players. It's not rocket science, nor...

    2025 Rolling ALL-Australian Team

Yeah, this is also laziness on my part: Because there is no specified "wing" position I just picked the highest-rated players who I knew had played there in the past. I didn't look into CBA attendance or anything like that; but given that information, I think those selections make more sense.

    2025 Rolling ALL-Australian Team

Thought it might be interesting to see what a team picked solely based on player rating points via Wheelo ratings would look like. Here I've simply selected the top-ranked players in each position, trying to keep my "editorial" decisions fairly limited (e.g., not including any player who has...

Apologies; I was in too much of a hurry to make my post less pretentious.

Autopsy Bulldogs lose 127-113 to Geelong. Flat

Right---given it's generally acknowledged that a home game (at one's home ground) is worth about a 2-goal advantage---on average---playing games more frequently at KP than at our home ground puts us at a disadvantage. To make that concrete, consider the 2021 season. We had one game against...

Autopsy Bulldogs lose 127-113 to Geelong. Flat

If anyone's interested, I made a couple of little graphs showing (a) how many times we've played Geelong at different venues over the past 40 games (dating back to when Docklands became our home ground), and (b) how many times each team has been the home team during the same period (bizarrely...

Autopsy Bulldogs lose 127-113 to Geelong. Flat

We've lost all four games we've played this year against teams above us on the ladder: Collingwood, Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Geelong. On the surface, this is damning; but I think the circumstances of each of those games have to be taken into account. While ostensibly two of them have been our...

Prediction Changes v Cats (Thurs 22 May, 7:30pm @ Alphabet)

Yeah, and likely this is why I'm not a football coach at any level… but I figure if whatever other strategies we have for preventing his influence don't work, there could be worse options than taking away his main strength: The ability to run and jump at the ball.

Prediction Changes v Cats (Thurs 22 May, 7:30pm @ Alphabet)

If Stewart is proving a problem in the forward 50, my totally-uninformed-and-not-at-all-based-on-relevant-experience strategy would be to deliberately sit the ball on top of his head when going inside 50. That way he doesn't have the run of it, and it gives free reign to our players to crash...

Autopsy AFL 2025 Round 11 - Cats v Dogs Thurs May 22nd 7:30pm AEST (GMHBA)

Ah, a cherry picker. Okay, my turn! Is that better than the 2 from the last 8 that we've played against you at our home ground? Or the 4 from the last 13? Or the fact that we haven't had a home game against you for 24 months? Isn't this fun?

Autopsy AFL 2025 Round 11 - Cats v Dogs Thurs May 22nd 7:30pm AEST (GMHBA)

Pity the AFL schedules us to play at Kardinia Park every year. At least we've won our last two there, though hopefully the ground will be in better nick than the last match we played there.

Prediction Changes vs Suns in Darwin

Through a bit of Wikipedia searching, I can see we won 6 in a row in 2008 too. We also won 7 in a row from the last few rounds of 1954 to the first few rounds of 1955, which is the greatest streak I've found. [Edit: AFL tables says we won 9 in a row in 1946!]

Prediction Changes vs Suns in Darwin

Our greatest winning streak in 2015 was 4 games… [Edit to add: We won the first 6 rounds of 2021, and 6 straight games from the end of 2016 to the start of 2017 (including the 4 finals in 2016 and the first 2 rounds of 2017). As far as I can see, those are our greatest winning streaks under...

    Review Footy Books

Thanks for the review. I was given this book for Christmas and it's been sitting on my bedside table ever since, waiting for me to finish another novel I'm currently in the middle of (I read serially, finishing one book before I start another). This might encourage me to speed up a bit to get to it!
