Terrible finals system in those days. Teams finishing 3rd faced an elimination final in the first week of the finals. Pies 1992 and North the following season finished 3rd and were eliminated in the first week.

Funny score review

Byrne played over 200 games but was unlucky, played in 4 losing grand finals and no flags. Arrived at Carlton the year after we won the 72 flag and left the year before we won our next flag in 79. Very good player for both clubs.
