Imo you are seriously underrating how good saints and pies were. Also many argue a reason why 2014 was so close was because 567 moved up and 123 dropped back. There are plenty of good stats to back this up, and so many ppl think the top 3-4 teams havent quite reached the heights of cats...

Not sure what you mean there. For me the 2009-11 period was the most aggressive, high quality footy the game has ever seen, and as pretentious or nostalgic as it may sound, I actually feel little privileged to have witnessed it. Something I will tell me kids about one day. The game since 2011...

This sticks out for me. Geelong's efforts against the quality of the pies, saints and hawthorn between 07-11 was exceptional. The best period to watch footy since the 90s imo.

I agree the 2007-2013 period had exceptionally strong depth towards the top (Geelong, Saints, Collingwood, Hawthorn, Sydney, Freo), and we've seen it slide back slightly towards the average since, but competition towards the top is never 'easy'.

Clean out? No, we just had close to our strongest season EVER. The players cared. Mal had a high DE, he was one of our best, but still had a poor game. Tippett/Franklin weren't the problem since they work in the forward line....and the ball didnt go there.
