Women's Footy Lions AFLW 2023 (Season 8) Discussion

Of the girls we drafted, I think Sophie Peters is going to be the one with real X factor. She has a great instincts defensively and in attack and reads the play better than most her age. Really looking forward to seeing her in the team.

Training 2024 Preseason training reports and discussion

El Niño and La Niña likely developed gradually over a long period of time since the formation of the Pacific Ocean and the establishment of the major ocean currents. We can track them back comfortably and quite accurately to the start of the 20th century. The 1974 floods in Brisbane were tied to...

Women's Footy Lions AFLW 2023 (Season 8) Discussion

I have seen live Peters and Amber Swan, another academy girl (nominated nationally I believe). Fairly impressive albeit with weaknesses to work on, but so they should at their age. Many of the academy girls are very comfortable mixing with the AFLW players already so their character and...

BeebMaster - Monty Python Cheese Any one of these. But be warned, the Camambert will tend to be a bit runny during an El Niño event.

Training 2024 Preseason training reports and discussion

As this is something of an area of knowledge, I think you could look at each El Niño/La Nina event as a little like varieties of cheese. They all have some common features but also unique individual characteristics. Some events are sharp and bitey, some are milder and softer. An El Niño event...

Women's Footy Lions AFLW 2023 (Season 8) Discussion

Evie Long is our unknown in this draft. If a bid come early for her, will we take her. I certainly think we will take Sophie Peters and Rania Crozier. After that we may try to take Bischa off Gold Coast, who I feel will take McMullen as their first pick. Interesting that Long nominated...

Women's Footy Lions AFLW 2023 (Season 8) Discussion

Without making any judgements about the players concerned, I remember a very experienced local footy coach saying that too many players with high skill and not enough sacrificial side to their game really hurts the team over the long haul. He used to say that you can get away with one or two as...

Women's Footy Lions AFLW 2023 (Season 8) Discussion

I am pretty sure that a lot of our local girls go back to their QAFL clubs until AFLW preseason training begins. I wonder if the new draftees from WA will be encouraged to make the move early and get settled in well before the preseason begins.

Women's Footy Lions AFLW 2023 (Season 8) Discussion

It seems like we have particularly targeted the two Eagles girls with an eye to the future. Both early twenties so hopefully a bit more developed as players. Coming from the Eagles they will be quite hungry for success. The girls who have left, the two Smith girls and Pauga, all must have...

Women's Footy Lions AFLW 2023 (Season 8) Discussion

We are going to have a lot of draft picks and can’t possibly use them all. I wonder if we might bundle some together to move up the draft order. Pick 12 and 20 might entice a club to give up a mid-top ten pick if we have someone in mind. Richmond gave up pick 9 for Collingwood’s 11 and 29, so a...

Women's Footy Lions AFLW 2023 (Season 8) Discussion

Dawes getting the recognition she deserves is great to see. A genuine A-grader now with much more to come. Mullins had an outstanding first season and very much has great things ahead of her. Posslethwaite season after so much injury shows a real resilience and a high level of trust from the...

Women's Footy Lions AFLW 2023 (Season 8) Discussion

I believe that Sophie Peters is rated very highly by the Lions and we will be planning to pick her. A tall forward in this draft would seem to be a must, and possibly another defender with some size, although Dunne’s development has probably happened faster than anticipated which brings some...

Women's Footy Grand Final, 2023 - North Melbourne vs. Brisbane Lions

Just a reflection on Tahlia Hickie. She did a huge amount of work this season in the ruck and kept on going despite being blocked out of the contest by so many opposition rucks who knew she could out jump them. Decent umpiring would have put a stop to that. Really impressive the work she did...

Women's Footy Grand Final, 2023 - North Melbourne vs. Brisbane Lions

I think Starc’s true quality lies in the fact that he doesn’t coach women who play AFL, he coaches AFLW, an important distinction. He understands the different nature of the game better than other coaches. It is congested and tight in lots of contests so tackling and pressure are critical. The...

Women's Footy Grand Final, 2023 - North Melbourne vs. Brisbane Lions

Awesome. These girls just do not give up. The whole team grew during the year. Dawes is now a legitimate star. Hampson, Mullins, Ellinger, Orla, Poss. So many have grown. Koenen, Campbell and Grider just so resolute and determined. Dakota lifted when we needed her. Hodder a tackling machine.

Women's Footy Grand Final, 2023 - North Melbourne vs. Brisbane Lions

North are a good team. Brisbane are fighting with all we have got - undersized but not giving up. The umpires are just awful. The story of the game.

Women's Footy Grand Final, 2023 - North Melbourne vs. Brisbane Lions

Best on ground so far: Koenen. Worst on ground by a big margin: umpires. They pick and choose what to pay. Arbitrary at best, outright scandalous at worst. Need a lift from Ellinger and Orla getting into space. Defensively Hodder has been outstanding but need her to create in attack. Conway...

Women's Footy Grand Final, 2023 - North Melbourne vs. Brisbane Lions

Desperate tackling and uncompromising pressure, then use the ball well when we have it. We can outrun and outwork them but have to make our chances count. I would love a game where the umpires enforce the rules of the game well, both ways. Pressure, girls!!

Women's Footy Lions AFLW 2023 (Season 8) Discussion

It has been really noticeable that we are physically smaller than virtually every opposition team we have played this season. Plenty of teams now have some very big women in them. I think we play to our strengths very well - relentless pressure, hard tackling, move the ball to space and get...

Women's Footy Preliminary Final, 2023 - Brisbane Lions vs. Geelong

This has been the worst season for AFLW umpiring by quite a margin. It feels like the AFL is trying to engineer the rules to sway the flow of the game and open it up more but it seems to have the opposite effect and no one knows what the interpretations even are any more.

Women's Footy Preliminary Final, 2023 - Brisbane Lions vs. Geelong

And who the hell didn’t vote for Dawes?!? Leading disposals, leading tackles, eight clearances. Was everywhere running both ways. Outstanding game.

Women's Footy Preliminary Final, 2023 - Brisbane Lions vs. Geelong

Really really gutsy win. Special effort by many tonight. Campbell worked her heart out. Orla was courageous. Hodder’s tackling shouldn’t be underrated. Ellinger is top tier. Dawes was just unbelievable with her efforts to impact contest after contest. Mullins just looks like she belongs and...

Women's Footy Preliminary Final, 2023 - Brisbane Lions vs. Geelong

Getting some lousy decisions against us. Need to tighten up defensively. We can beat them by getting out into space on the wings and delivering better inside 50. Orla, Ellinger, Dawes, having great games. Mullins will be a star.

Women's Footy Lions AFLW 2023 (Season 8) Discussion

I think our two most improved. Top tier players now that any club would want. Dawes’ aggression around the contest and ability to navigate herself out into clear air makes her such an asset in a game as congested as AFLW often is. Something to be said for shorter players who have the right skill...

    Women's Footy Non-Lions AFLW Discussion 2023 (Season 8)

Melbourne hubris coming to get them. They really let other teams out work them as the season went on. Geelong will be a tough opponent. I hope Queensland brings some vicious humidity the moment they land. SE Qld November weather, your time to shine.

    Women's Footy Non-Lions AFLW Discussion 2023 (Season 8)

What is strange is that the umpires seem to know the rules, because they will apply them sometimes but they have no consistency and the interpretation seems to change at random between games and within games. I honestly couldn’t guess much of the time which way the umpire will go even when the...

Women's Footy Qualifying Final, 2023 - Adelaide vs. Brisbane Lions

Big credit to Tahlia Hickie. She gets blocked, sometimes subtly but sometimes not, at most ruck contests these days and the umpires seem fine with it. She is actually out-rucking in a pure sense at most contests but the umpires seem quite content to allow the blocks that even up the contest. I...
