Has been a great player for us but time to move on from him being our prime midfielder.
I think he can still be a good lockdown defender though. One thing is for sure and that is he is NOT a forward. He was in the front 6 at the centre bounces a number of times on Friday. He's not creative...
The squibs were bad but I was upset at him in the 3rd quarter when he kicked his goal. At the game live and Ned was all alone by himself in the goal square and rachele goes for goal himself from 30 out.
If that's tex he passes that on 9 times out of 10. I don't think Racheles a team player...
According to SEN and champion data he's the 9th highest rated player in the comp at the moment.
I must admit I thought he's had a slow and not so good start to the year, with some excruciating turnovers, so interesting to hear.
Specialist sub or nothing. He was absolutely brilliant as a sub against Geelong. Had about 10 tackles and 15 touches in a quarter and a half, and his disposals were clean.
Really like him. Plays like most Irish players, really aggressive with moving the ball.
I feel comfortable with the ball in is hands, which is such a valuable trait for a tall defender.
How do you see him fitting in with the current midfield? In my opinion he's a midfielder only (and not a forward), but seems your mids bat pretty deep at the moment. I can't see heeney, warner, Parker being pushed out anytime soon.
Rankine is so much better than Stengle they don't even compare.
Dawson and Rankine two absolutely huge recruits. Unfortunately we probably need a couple more to make up for our poor drafting
Tex just needs some time off to heal the back, then see how he goes second half of year. He was only in career best form 6 months ago, no reason he can't play for another year or two.
Hawkins is 3 years older and still playing well...
Even if nicks thinks rachele is too important to have up forward, he's one our most talented players and should be developing into a full time midfielder like Soligo. Nicks is clinging and not preparing us properly for the future.
I actually think his ceiling is higher than soligo but he's not...
Back pocket lockdown role.
Can only have one in an under extractor and I prefer crouch, he's more creative with his handpass and has a stronger body.
Laird doesn't need to be uber creative as a lockdown defender and still think he can give us some really value.
He's not a natural forward, I...
Kind of yes, kind of no.
If we had a good aggressive coach I think we could make finals, but we're still crying out for another elite mid, and Tyler Welsh has big shoes to fill when Tex retires.
I've never been so convinced our bad start is coaching related. Sometimes it's hard to know if it's the list, players out of form, or coaching. It's just so frustratingly obvious he's too scared to just let the players go for it.
After all the pre season talk Rachele has had what, 2 CBAs for...
If the players had any faith in his new gameplan over the off season it must surely be gone by now. Why do we wait until the last quarter to play formula 1 footy
What does nankervis have to do to get a game? Came in last year and was superb, hasn't set a foot wrong since, we're 0-2 with a half back in career worst form, we lack any type of flair.
Uninspiring changes
We were the highest scoring team last year so we have the personnel. Nick's said all off-season he wanted us to be more defensive. I'm convinced he's basically spent the last 6 months ruining our major strength and now the players don't know what to do.
I wouldn't mind Bevo at the moment. A bit of a nut case, throw the magnets around and get angry.
I like nicks as a person but he was completely outcoached tonight
My take from the game - I don't like rankine as a full time midfielder. He's most damaging for us in the forward line, pinch hitting in the midfield when we need a spark.
Agree. I don't understand what's wrong with playing the same guy as a sub every week. Make it a specialised role and get a comparative advantage by doing it. He's useless as a full time player anyhow
Pedlar Dawson and Curtin in our centre bounces thanks. Three lefties just to throw the opposition off.
Add Thilthorpe in the ruck and that's an extremely dynamic midfield mix. So much different to years of ROB laird crouch and sloane
You just know mchenry will be McAdams replacement.
We've got enough scoring power there with fog TT tex rankine and Pedlar. That needs to be offset by our big time pressure forwards murphy and mchenry
I honestly think the 2 grandfinalists were the only clubs to improve their best 22. Lots of player movement but I don't really think any other teams got that automatic improvement
The thing is, we have salary cap space this year given we're super young and have the extra allowance. I don't mind paying petty $1m in 2024 since it's clearly sitting there.
I'm not OK with paying him overs in 2025 unless he turns into an AA player next year.
I feel it's a one time offer...
Haven't seen much of Petty other than that game he went forward and kicked 6. Just how good of a defender is he, and why isn't he the number 1 in Melbourne? Who does he play like?
I'm a bit worried about our strategy now that Oliver isn't in the picture.
Effectively were going into 2024 down Doedee and Mcadam, and plus Burgess and some young draftees. That's going backwards IMO.
It could be Tex's last high performing season next year, we need to strike now.
