The points system, if implemented correctly, is a far better equalisation measure that a salary cap can be. It is way harder to cheat points than it is to pay overs in undetectable ways.

They should just play the Grand Final next week. We're only going to be going through the motions until then and it will be a quicker kill for us all.

In 1980, we were close to a scenario where football in Melbourne would be re-structured. The VFA First Division would have been the top tier with Second Division below it and under that, there were to be as many as six divisions comprising VMFL clubs. Promotion and relegation would have taken...

When they rolled out the points system in WA, the home club (1 point) was deemed to be the first club a player played for. I'd be surprised if that has changed in the eight years since.

The Frankston-Dandy match was actually a Round 15 match. The round coincided with the first VFL senior match played on Sunday in Melbourne since the 1970 royal visit, with only 14,180 attending the 10 VFA matches that day (the aggregate was 30,750 a fortnight earlier). Here is a preview...

Your best bet is probably a trip to the state library and go through the microfilm for August of each of those years and extract the ladder out of the relevant Monday edition of the Mercury.

Funding and self-interest are the key issues here. Simply put, the AFL won't fund both an AFL reserves and a "VFA", and they have stated that in the past. The AFL hasn't brought back the AFL reserves yet because they are worried about the cost ... at a time they are spending money trying to...

Hutchy would rather run six hours of non stop gambling adverts overnight if he was able to. I'd prefer the IPL to replays of humdrum breakfast shows from disinterested hosts, at least it is live sport.

One factor to remember is that these clubs are seeking admission, not necessarily the league seeking these clubs out. These clubs also have a right to explore their options that they believe will benefit them into the future, e.g. Mt Evelyn leaving the then-EDFL to join the Yarra Valley...

Time will show that Ormond won't be in the leading pack. It is fair to say that not too many would have them down as playing in the last two or three weekends of the season when doing their season prognostications before round one. It doesn't help that they are unlikely to be fielding their best...

That's the benefit of democracy. A club from a neighbouring league seeks admission (as is their right) and the clubs currently in the league have their right to vote against their admission. But, if enough clubs think that the club would be of benefit to the league (or they will have an...

Is he saying having no reserves, just one senior grade? I think that might be an option to keep clubs going, but the more ambitious clubs would head off to another league with their seniors and reserves. It probably would keep some clubs going for another decade or so. Not the worst idea in...
