He is turning into the ruckman equivalent of Sam Frost.
It's tougher for him when he's spending as much time forward as he is. But at some point he needs to switch on and reduce the number of dumb plays he creates from nothing.
Reilly O'Brien? In 105 games he's kicked a goal in just 12 of them. Only once has he scored two in the same game.
If he kicks a bag on us (as he inevitably now will) it would just be down to us being awful rather than missing a trick.
Our forward pocket depth is pretty dire and his tackling efforts left a lot to be desired. But imo he should get an extended run on the proviso that his KPI is providing pressure as he has pace.
The 10 marks is a career-high (beating the two outings he had 8 in 2021) and the 13 disposals is his second-most in a match (behind 14 against Hawthorn in '21).
Has always had the tank to lead up all day, but it makes all the difference if he can actually get to good spots.
I am a fan but two things he needs to get out of his game:
he continually thinks he has way more time than he actually does at stoppages. Feel like he gets done holding the ball a lot
kicking no reason bananas/checksides when passing around the ground or getting the clearance. No penetration in...
They need to tell him to pull his head out of his arse. A 15m kick sideways does not need to be a heroball bullet, dude has to get back to weighting kicks properly.
Putting aside the defensive component (both his struggles on this front, and that we really aren't covering for him either because plenty of others don't defend in the first place too), he is just trying to play way too much hero-ball when he's actually got the pill.
He had a kick-in to the...
In a weird way, I am a bit sad for him that he's ended up with us instead of a genuine contender.
He very clearly can still play at a pretty high level.
It is a pre-season match obviously with less heat on, so I'll hold off on saying he's changed.
But across this, the intraclub, and to a lesser extent the match sim against STK, he looks like he has made strides at absorbing contact in genuine contested ball situations and fighting through it...
Perhaps but the league is also (somewhat understandably) obsessed with talls, and key defenders in particular are highly sought-after players. Esava Ratugolea just got a five(?) year deal based off one borderline ok season playing as an intercept defender at AFL level.
Meanwhile, McGrath is one...
I have been glass half full on McGrath in the past but the mere suggestion he could net band 1 FA compo is a level of delusion that's too potent even for the pealers thread
Thought he looked pretty good and was involved quite a bit. His kicking was tidier, though his role was very outside, sticking to the wing.
He had a really nice moment in the forward pocket where he was incredibly clean at ground level under pressure and got the ball out to a teammate to help...
Yeah it's just that 2021 season.
He previously re-signed at the Dogs in 2015 (until the end of 2018) when he was to be OOC at the end of the following season. Was traded to us to at the end of 2017.
Not even convinced this is a contract year btw, I think it is likely he has a trigger that...
Does anyone know if training will be on at the hangar at 9am or so on Saturday?
I'm hoping to make the trek and get unrealistic expecations that I can be disappointed about by Round 3.
A nice example of Bomber's comment earlier this year that good people come to the club and seem to get changed by it, when this should be the other way around.
