Can't agree on Hughes for Freo - if he was rated out of a score of 100, most Freo fans would rate him between a 3-7 out of 100 - (he only rates slightly higher than 1/100 because well, he's tough as old boots and will do 3-4 massive bumps a year). It's impossible for him to be overrated.
For...
A counter to that:
- Have Collingwood avoided the drop? The natural rhythm of their list build might suggest they may be in for the drop soon and last year was a last hurrah. Sure, some of their recent pick will probably see them avoid an Eagles/Roos type drop, but they are not on the cusp of a...
I don’t get what all the fuss is. Despite the AFL rhetoric of equalisation, is it not true that throughout history there’s always been 2-3 teams at any one time that really really suck. It’s just part of the natural rhythm of list management.
And it doesn’t even require hindsight:
when North...
Pretty happy with how we went weeks 1 and 2 - today, we’re playing well below the level of those two games so far. But we have been a third quarter team so far - so fingers crossed we can pull away.
The one thing that’s not being factored into any of these discussions is the impact of the new ruck rules on Darcy’s performance as a ruck. From the small sample we saw in pre-season (vs Eagles in the scratchie and for just over a quarter against Port before he got injured) there is a chance we...
Complete hot garbage for 80% of Q1 and then we’ve lifted.
You want your leadership group to stand up - and Pearce all game and Switta with that smother set the tone and everyone jumped on board.
Some of the ball movement was sloppy but the intent to go quickly was what we want to see.
Now...
I have no idea how many times we have to do this, but here goes again:
- Langdon: Left in 2019 before JLo
- Hogan: Exited under JLo and Bell's purge of undesirable characters (along with Hill and Bennell). No coincidence the number of bad behaviour stories in the West dropped from one a month...
Cannot come up with a single meritorious feature of this Opening Round nonsense.
Didn't paid any attention to the build up to the season or fall out of the first few games. Didn't watch any of the games. Forgot to do my tipping. A random kid gets a rising star nomination even though only 40% of...
I actually feel sorry for the kid - he's done nothing to deserve this attention, and judging from Saturday he looks like he could be a ripper - but nothing short of lifting the flag whilst simultaneously felating NicNat in the middle of the MCG within the next two years is going to live up to...
Like most Freo fans I'm cautiously optimistic that our young team (17th for average games played) will be a lot better than many are predicting/expecting - but for mine it comes down simply to whether our coach has become less conservative and like many fans I'm not convinced until I see it...
Totally agree - it’s not like this game is coming off 3-4 months of focused preparation for the season where you bed in skills and game plan. Plenty of time to prepare for the new season.
Thanks Tonga Bob and for everyone who bothered to read my preview. It was a fun one to write and I’m glad some liked it.
I changed jobs 4-5 months ago and spend far far less time online as a consequence - but this is a good impetus to get onto BigFooty a lot more than I have recently.
Happy...
Not sure about how we (Freo) will go next season - but one thing I am certain of is that we will finish above the Hawks. So many folks are predicting them to rise but last season we comfortably beat them home and away by over 100 points across the two games.
Bearing in mind our experience and...
Just catching up.
Feels like a reasonable price for Schultz. Sad to see him go. Not as sad as I would have been had we not had a glimpse of Emmett and started to see Sturt wake up to the demands of top level footy.
Don’t really care either way about the Henry deal. We overpaid when we drafted...
Never in doubt. Said it a year ago - he’s in a long term relationship with a Perth girl, who’s from a very established Perth family. Plus he’s got his bit on the side with Ryan.
Any speculation had been merely about driving for the best contract.
Never had even a 1% doubt he wouldn’t sign...
Agree it’s been the most disappointing season - but significant list cuts and new toys to play with is not the answer.
The root cause of our performance this year is inexperience and (I hate to say it) some pretty ordinary coaching. The make up of our list is not a Top 5 reason for this...
I don’t think so. Players who’ve re-signed long deals in the last two years (Serong, Young, Ryan, Treacy, Amiss) have all said how much they love the club and the culture.
You can put most of our departures over the last few years in to five buckets:
Better chance of making Best 22 in their...
None at all, because as bad as 2016 was for us it was nowhere near as bad as the Eagles are in 2023.
It took us 5 years after 2016 to get back to finals. I don’t see the Eagles bouncing back as quick as that from 2023.
Connor before his injury was shaping up as a more than serviceable extractor, quick hands etc.
But we didn’t need that at the time with Neale doing the same thing but better.
We tried to then get Connor more on the outside and it really exposed his weaknesses. Neale leaves and we get Brayshaw...
If you go back to pre-season there were so many WC fans saying last year was an aberration, that the list was still good and they had been drafting fantastically for 2-3 years. Many thought they were an outside chance for finals.
For mine, I thought their list was a dog’s breakfast, their...
I’ll stick with what I always say in this situation - for selection integrity and barring injury, you have to reward a performance like yesterday with an unchanged lineup. Not one player deserves to be benched following that.
But if Cox is fit then I’d make him sub (if we can give Fyfe the...
I read one report likening his move into the guts to the move Jordan Dawson has made at Adelaide. He might be a couple of inches shorter than Mundy and a couple of KGs lighter - but he’s still filling out.
If he could be similar to Dawson/Mundy and (I didn’t think I’d be saying this a couple of...
It’s like 15 of them are playing injured. No energy, no burst out of stoppages, weak tackles, no gut running for the ball.
Just not even close to acceptable at this level. Didn’t think we could play a worse game than GWS but this was probably the worst game I’ve seen us play in 5-6 years.
But we’ve seen them be good enough in the past. Not denying they’re cashing in tickets from previous performances, but each of them have had superb games. Where’s the effort from Freddie like when he ran down Balta last year, or bust a guy to chase down Richards in the final against the Doggies.
The players have put more effort into our social media work this week than they did in the first half.
Hugely watching us mark it at half back and then hold on to it waiting for someone to get free. The players are so static.
It pains me to say it as Switta’s buddy, but Switta, Schultz and Freddie have contributed the square root of f*** all today (and not much more than that since the bye).
