After West Coast eliminated Melbourne from finals by beating Adelaide last year, the Eagles finished on 1964 points for (the year of Melbourne's last flag) and 1858 points against (the year when Melbourne was founded).
Could have easily been 270+ between the two teams but not even the highest scoring game of the year (which ironically was the game immediately before). Still no game has reached 240 points for both teams.
Not sure exactly what's gone wrong, but just to put it in perspective: after 9 rounds, GWS has scored fewer points (709) than the Brisbane Lions (715).
Pathetic by the Giants.
But even more pathetic by the umpires. The Roos have been the beneficiaries of some awful calls today. *(Who knows where we would have been if the Giants weren't robbed of an easy goal late in Q2?)
Biased umpiring should actually be punished. IF an umpire clearly favors one team during a game, he/she gets suspended or demoted to the VFL. If it's in a final, they get fired on the spot.
Right now, we just let them get off scot-free no matter how blatant it is (e.g. Troy Pannell giving 18...
No. Just no.
That said, we ought to do something about the state of the game, to free it up a little (two teams haven't combined for 200+ in over 2 weeks). But I can't see the introduction of fouling out doing much if any good.
1. Collingwood 2011 (seriously, they had 182% before the final round)
2. Geelong 2008
3. St Kilda 2009
4. Hawthorn 2012
5. Sydney 2016
6. West Coast 2015
7. Sydney 2014
8. Fremantle 2013
9. Brisbane 2004
10. Essendon 2001
11. Adelaide 2017
12. West Coast 2005
13. Sydney 2006
14. Collingwood 2003...
I think the constant rule changes are a necessary part of a game that (d)evolves as quickly as AFL. If you let the game decline, then just allow it to fester instead of doing something about it, it will eventually turn into an 80-minute game of keep-away (at best) or a giant rugby-league style...
No suspensions during finals. Period.
Suspensions can still be handed out but should be served at the start of the next regular season.
Edit: I think you should be suspended from finals in only one circumstance: if you recklessly or deliberately cause an injury to a player that forces him out...
Melbourne is most likely, they had a lot of narrow losses last year plus a lot of injuries. With better luck and a healthy roster they could conceivably make top 4, and barring another injury-plagued season they're definitely finals bound. Not counting out Hawthorn either, they really improved...
Better than always playing at the MCG. But not as good as playing at the home field of the team that finished higher on the ladder. Certainly wasn't fair to the Swans in '16 or the Crows last year that both had to play in Melbourne despite being the better team respectively.
That said, I think...
Time to revisit my predictions for 2017:
Beat Collingwood? Check.
Beat West Coast? Double check.
Beat "the living-daylights" out of the Bulldogs? First was too close for comfort. Second was solid, but I don't know if it was full proportionate retribution for last year's prelim. By "beat the...

2007 VFL season, first elimination final between Bendigo and Ballarat.
North Ballarat: 1.5 4.8 10.19 21.22 (148)
Bendigo: 7.3 13.8 16.14 16.15 (111)
Yes, this really happened. Bendigo was 54 points up at half time...
2017 was a pretty average year in my opinion. Sure, lots of close games, but that doesn't matter much to me. I prefer to just enjoy footy without stressing over the result. Perhaps a well deserving GF winner, the Crows/Tigers/Cats/Giants might redeem the season a little. I prefer it when the...
