    Expansion 20th AFL team location

I heard of plenty of people that couldn't get tickets as well. With a larger capacity, it would've got 14-15k. Which is more than Gold Coast got against the Lions in last year's QClash.

The Giants only have eight players on their list from Canberra and the Riverina (18% of their list). The Riverina is pretty far from Sydney, so a lot of players that have gone through the academy still end up in Melbourne. Three quarters of current academy products are no longer playing with the...

    GWS in Canberra

One of the downsides of this relationship is the constant jabs at relocation any time Canberra has a good crowd. I know I should spend my time better, but I've spent the past hour arguing with some numpty on Twitter. And it's not unique. Canberra is almost too strong as a secondary market...

    GWS in Canberra

Cricket ACT and the ACT Government are both pushing for a Manuka upgrade for potential Sheffield Shield and BBL sides. It's on pre-existing plans to upgrade the eastern side, which would bring the stadium to about 20k. By 2033, which is the first season not contracted with the Giants, the light...

I'm so oblivious I didn't notice that either. That would make sense timing-wise with the renegotiation. Interesting choice though, can't see a genuine reason to take those away while they're promoting themselves as Canberra's team.

When did they take Canberra out of the song? The second verse used to say "from Canberra Town", at least when it played in Canberra.

    GWS in Canberra

I think you and I have pretty similar views long-term. Once Canberra gets a team, it'd be pretty cool to see a Canberra v Giants fixture permanently on Anzac Day to build off it.

    GWS in Canberra

I'm incredibly keen for this game. I think Canberra should be getting an Anzac Day match every year. It just makes sense with the war memorial and the heavy Defence presence. It's officially sold out. My guess for attendance is 13k.

    Expansion 20th AFL team location

Canberra only gets two games during the Easter Show, so no issue with scheduling with the later one. In a normal season, there's a five or six-game stretch over the Easter Show. I reckon the Giants only need to fill that with one Accor game in the middle to break up the stretch, then get more...

You say that, but the AFL has the most clubs of any professional league in Australia, and it got that way by going slowly. It's the only Australian pro league I can think of that hasn't rectracted or had to fully reform. Slowly and steady is boring, but it's got the AFL to its pre-eminent position.

    20th AFL Team

I get there's difference historical context, but most of what you said is pretty much my exact point. Just because the Giants have 6k members and play three games a year here, it doesn't make them any more "Canberra's team" than North is Tasmania's team. As Badger said, there are at least half...

    20th AFL Team

That's kind of my point though. The prevailing narrative that Canberra can't get a team because it's Giants territory is bull. In terms of supporters, it doesn't belong to any one team, so no one team should be stopping us getting a team.
  13. Canberra Pear

    20th AFL Team

That's fair. I've never met a Giants-first fan in Canberra, but I know multiple fans of most other clubs. I probably attract them, but I know so many Port supporters here. And loads of Richmond and Collingwood fans.

    20th AFL Team

North are receiving the equal most after the Suns and the Giants, but North's $4m per year didn't stop the AFL putting the team in Hobart. It won't make up the entire shortfall, but Canberra takes up a prime spot on the guernsey. A sponsor would snap that up pretty quickly. Maintaining the...

Well, their AFLW team is officially called the North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos, so, yes?

Just like North is Tasmania's home team with 7000 members?

He's not entirely wrong though. AFL fans are happy to have the Giants because it's a way to support AFL, but outside of that, the Giants haven't permeated the public consciousness the way the Raiders or Brumbies have. I see way more Raiders gear than I do Giants gear. I probably even see more...

They did do an analysis if you count the AFL NT Scoping Report, which said they'd have the $15m funding gap every year. Tasmania and the NT are apples and oranges for demographics. Hobart is twice as big as Darwin. Tasmania's secondary market of Launeston and northern Tasmania is much...

The fact that it's getting to Woden by 2033 is as good as fully approved, but the final route hasn't been fully locked down yet. Obviously, I'd rather the option that goes closer, but 1km isn't that far in the scheme of stadiums. It's a 15-minute walk on Google. For comparison, Adelaide Oval...

Stage 2b is scheduled to reach Woden in 2033, which will pass the vicinity of Manuka. At worst, the stop will be 1km away, but possibly as close as 600-700 metres depending which route they go with.

The same writer published his piece on Canberra today. I think Darwin is his preferred for sentimental reasons (as it is for many), but he recognises the strengths of Canberra. He calls it the "compromise" option between Darwin and WA3, which I think is fair. The new market expansion of Darwin...

We don't need him in for eight more years, just long enough to get the ball rolling, like Jeremy Rockliff did. Just this upcoming term might do it. But if he wanted another eight years, he could probably get it. The LNP's platform is tram=bad, and it fails for them every election.

    20th AFL Team

A part of the AFL being willing to fork out the extra cash for the Giants and Suns is that they, in theory, will one day become self-reliant. The Gold Coast is heading towards one million people, and Western Sydney so huge that the Giants only need a portion to survive. So while the AFL would...

    20th AFL Team

This article suggested there are movements behind the scenes. "prominent figures behind the scenes are believed to be also eyeing off an AFL team long term." Don't know how much to read into it (it is the Daily Mail after all), but it would make sense. The ACT Government has to balance both...

By that logic, Tasmania shouldn't get a team because North plays in Hobart.

    20th AFL Team

Joondalup would require a bit more though. When you have a small, part-time capacity, you can get away with mostly hill. Neither Albury or Townsville have more than 1500 seats. You'd think a Joondalup stadium would have to be 20-25k, so they'd need a much higher percentage of that to be...

    20th AFL Team

That's interesting. North sure about Hobart, but somebody mentioned Hawthorn makes $125k per game on stadium signage. The Giants had a similar deal at Manuka. I would doubt such a deal exists for Optus. So the smaller stadiums definitely have their benefits. One of the drawcards of WA3 is this...

Not going to say no to 12 games in Canberra. The Giants continuing to play three games a year seems silly though.

    20th AFL Team

The main reason GWS are playing games in Canberra is the millions our government pays them every year. That money would go to a Canberra team if we got one. As soon as that money dries up, the Giants have no reason to be in Canberra. Canberra v GWS at Manuka should be a permanent fixture though.

    20th AFL Team

Good point. There was an article regarding the WAFL grand final saying they needed more than 20k to break even, then 25-30k to actually make money. Also why a WA3 team needs to be guaranteed of crowds to be profitable. I think a Canberra team getting 18k crowds at an upgraded Manuka would be...
