For me, I am trying to imagine us playing Pies/Dees/Lions in a final. It seems to me when Harry/Charlie play against May/Lever/Moore/Howe/Harris Andrews..etc. We get a small return from them and often v.v. with their big forwards.
Then it falls to small/mid forwards...
I am not sure on the Saad narrative. Even SOS said on radio at the time. If we had split the pick, Dodoro would just require both and that is what we would have to pay. He went onto say the reason is that Saad was worth around that price anyhow and once you commit to a player it's up to you...
I think though, you still have too many match winners. We have a couple, literally. But as was the case last year, when the chips are down you have a half dozen that will make that play, that can turn that 25% chance into something, that can do what needs to be done. Gawn still the best...
Agree with this. E.g Matt Kennedy re signing video 2022 Voss said "you can only play inside mid and we only have two slots".
2023 Voss selects Matt Kennedy at HBF and then surprise surprise he is in and out of the side until he gets back in the middle.
As per Ross Lyon "you demonstrate...
No resistance from GC and a better selected team from us.
Tackled better because we had more mature bodies forward of the ball.
Played smarter footy because we had smarter players forward of the ball.
Had kicks from better places because of the above.
...jury is out until we win a game where it...
All this discussion about players like Fisher/Martin/Marchbank/Cunners/Philp/Martin/LOB..etc..and talk that we should not trade/delist them if the "draft picks are worthless" or "in case he gets his body right". This misses one point. Having these players on our list means we dont often have...
Not for me, unless you are key position or highly skilled small forward, you have to be able to run, at speed for a long time. He is a player from the previous era now . I loved him but that was then.
WatchEd Tigers game and Hawks games. Unless You are a key position player or a highly skilled small forward..as Hardwick, said, can’t run, can’t play. The pressure the constant running and closing down. Our games look nothing like the games those teams have played this weekend.
Dow can’t run...
The fundamentals, your are so right. We have a dozen or so coaches and we still cannot get the fundamentals right.
e.g. take Liam Jones, with us, he was erratic, heart in mouth stuff, playing over the top. Goes to the Dogs and plays within himself, does his job, little fuss, and dare I say...
When he left us he decided to have surgery and got his back fused (that is a very big decision). No one knows how that is going to go or what would happen at AFL level.
I agree, but what really worries me though is that when Voss thinks he is sending a mesage but the players think "coaches are making these players a scape goat for this crappy game plan"
I thought I saw the first outward signs of frustration and lack of belief in the plan.
If we win against the Swans with Charlie kicking 8 and get very little from the other forwards then, just like the West Coast game, we have again wasted an opportunity to practise/address our inside 50 issues.
With West Coast we had our small/med kick only 4 goals. The same round them Demons...
I agree 100%.
The risk with having too many "always injured" and too many players like Fog / Plow on your list is that we waste space we could use to find a state legeaue player that can move into our best 22.
I don't believe there is not one single state league player in the country capable...
The reason I dont like it, is that I believe against top 6-8 teams it will simply not work. Your last line is true, we have the best two best talls out of the Demons and us, but their small/mid sized forwards are always better. We have too many eggs in to few forward baskets.
You need both...
While we won, dont think West Coast game showed us any improvements in small/mid forward impact. Their lack of impact unsustainable for me.
Our small/mid forwards kicked 5 in a one sided match. Look at Demons small/mid forwards who kicked 12 in the same type of game. That is more...
Your point is accurate and I think for that reason it is the coaches that tell them to structure this way. I cannot believe that when a player has the ball outside 60, walks back to take his kick, ahead Harry and Charlie always forget to move apart. They could even go your turn, my turn but...
I must apologise to everyone.
After the Swans game I stated on here, we will not play kick mark all game like we tried against the Swans. I was convinced we would be balanced in our approach. I was wrong. We did it most of the game against the Tigers.
I dont think it is sustainable way...
Honey, while he has all athletic attributes, for me, is missing the most important thing as a small/med forward. That forward nous, you cant teach it and you must have it. I look at Ginnivan and the like and its inbuilt in them.
As much as I would love to see him do well, I don't think he...
I really like Cowan. But he was on Heeney early and could not control him. We still need a no nonsense, quick, agile, strong, lockdown defender. These 2/3 goal types, Bolton, Greene, Heeney, Ginnivan, Stengle, Pickett all lay in wait.
Saad is a big sacrifice, Newman a little too slow, Doc...
Okay so finally watched the game.
There is no way we are playing that way during the season.
In the 1st qtr there was zero overlap run. I could not count any handball off after a mark. Maybe one. while it was all the Swans did.
That is a directive. They have been told to kick mark kick...
For me...he is a forward not a backman.
He played that pre season game last year and looked great as the 3rd tall down forward, leading high up. People will hate me for this but I see him competing with SoS and Martin for his place. I think both SoS and Martin are vulnerable if Kemp can meet...
Some complaining Voss too involved. For me when Voss said "they must be competitors" when asked what he looked for, I was sooo happy he was involved.
Think many of our draftees have lacked a little of the competitive gene. Dow, LOB, Setterfield, SPS...while more recent ones have had...
I like Fisher, the conundrum for me with Fisher is this.
He is quick and crafty and all those things you mention. But, with the game all about forward half turnovers I am often caught wondering if he can stick enough tackles. Not simply apply them for the stat, but actually hold them. I...
