It's actually happened only once and is now mentioned in the article - Western Bulldogs round 10, 2005, then same lineup again in rounds 1 & 2 of 2006.

Every second spot gets 20 points, every second last spot gets only 2 points. No need to contact you in a private manner, but I’d be interested to read a post with your own rankings and methodologies. There’s no universally ‘right’ way to do it unfortunately.
I think a club changing its name and moving to a different city is a LOT different to just getting a new training base and/or playing at a different venue in the same city.
Bit of tounge-in-cheek there with Kenny Williams being the only one. But the concept of reloacation would make a great future post -one I’m sure would get a good debate going.
I reckon the only Sydney Swans supporter to ever have South Melb links is Kenny Williams - and he only stuck with them because he happened to be living in Sydney at the time - but good on him, a true club stalwart.
Just imagine this - the AFL relocate the West Coast Eagles to Hobart and become known as the Hobart Eagles. How many West Coast supporters do you tgink would still think it's the same club and keep on supporting that club? The answer is probably zero. I'm sorry, but a club's spiritual existence...
The SCG is a looong way from the Lake Oval. 'Relocation' is just V/AFL spin for folding a club that is a non-performing liability. They try to keep the supporters being able to still barrack for their team - even though what used to be a short tram ride to the home ground is now an expensive...
That's right. As I wrote in another reply: Even in the 20s, crowds were often in excess of 30-40 thousand - a massive percentage of the city's population. The stakes were just as high if not higher. Heroic on-field efforts, tough as nails, brutal competitiveness. Go back in time and tell the...

I havent used total flags or any totals as a ranking metric, only the rate per years in the comp. Still, a lot of evidence is pointing to having another look at these metrics but in the AFL-era only.
With the AFL era, you do get the introduction of Crows, Dockers, Power and now Suns and GWS. It is also roughly when the game became fully professional and with salary caps, etc.
Interesting way to do it. Quite similar to my results except the order of the top 5. Not sure Pies fans will agree with being relegated to 5th place after playing 42 GFs including 5 in the AFL-era. But I do think they should be penalised for having such a poor record in them. Geelong seem a...
I believe South Melbourne virtually folded. Sydney Swans were formed. Can't be viewed as the same club as far as I'm concerned. Different name, different city. Perhaps a topic for another post.
All tables and of course the final standings have now been updated to reflect this. Carlton still comes out on top but Bombers knock Eagles out of third place.
That is an area for debate - I personally, along with many others, view Sydney as a separate club from Sth Melb. I also view Fitzroy as separate from the Bears/Lions. 'Relocation', in reality, is when one club folds and is replaced by a new one.
There a lot of ways you can shape it with weightings, etc. but I tried to keep it as simple as possible. No universal way unfortunately. I'm pretty satisfied with the clear top four though. Nice Tiges jibe btw
I have now taken this into account and adjusted the final table - Blues still (narrowly) take top spot over the Pies. Bombers displace the Eagles for third spot. Thanks for the heads-up.
This is a great point and cool facts - I actually should have subtracted those numbers from the total seasons contested for those five clubs. It has an effect on Prem win%, W.Spoon%, MinorPrem%, MadeFinals%, and MadeGF%. I just had a look - Luckily for me (and Blues fans) Carlton still come out...
The wooden spoons factor is only one of ten rating factors though. Average finishing position, win% of games, etc are probably more relevant, but I simply had to include good old wooden spoons for completeness.
Home win% stats apply only to matches as the designated home side , and the away win% stats apply only to matches played as the designated away side - all regardless of venue. Away games at the MCG are still away games.
Last year, I wrote an article, A look at the most dominant eras in VFL/AFL history, which, as the title implies, looked at which VFL/AFL clubs have enjoyed the best eras/dynasties spanning five to eight years. Such dynasties are invariably built on the back of a club boasting an amazingly...
