PSA: ARC can now call for reviews 90sec after the event

Right. Pre video reviews there was an option of overturning goal umpiring decisions, though obviously it hardly ever happened (I think i can only recall seeing it once). The goal umpire would do this weird signal where he'd cross the two flags (kind of making an 'X') indicating the previous...

PSA: ARC can now call for reviews 90sec after the event

Yeah, your memory is playing tricks. Goals have been checked automatically (even without a goal umpire requested review) since ARC was introduced.

The compo should start at the second round (at best).

Well, there you go. You're right about the free agency compo picks: they impose the same cost on other clubs whose first round pick slides. The obvious remedy is just stop giving free agency compo in the first round. But I don't make the rules.

News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

Good question. As above, I'm guessing it's not just sliding down the order that gets a club compensation but specifically not being able to draft the player that you've bid on.

News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

I assume it's not just getting pushed back that gets you compensation: it's only when a bottom 5 club (e.g. Richmond) bids on a player (e.g. Cochrane) but misses out on him because the club he's tied to (Port) matches. Richmond alone in that scenario that would be compensated, not the other...

Why would they be due a compo pick anyway?
  8. T

News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

No, I don't think that's right. The club in that scenario would use pick 3, and then be able to use some lower pick that makes up the difference between pick 2 (-10% discount) and pick 3. Anyway, it's the sort of situation that could occur under the existing rules. It's not an issue that's...

The Lions are neither big nor bad. It's nothing specific to Brisbane: it's just that clubs should pay an equivalent value when drafting father-sons.

News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

Jesus. Clubs getting additional first round picks "for junk" is exactly the problem. How are you not getting this? Clubs lower down didn't necessarily get their target. Picks 9 and 11 (which should have been used up in matching the Dean bid) were instead held by North and Essendon. Whoever...

News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

    a) I'm not angry at Carlton (I don't think anyone else is either). b) the cost to Carlton obviously wasn't the same. The whole point of splitting first round picks is that clubs thereby acquire more points. It meant Carlton retained residual draft capital having matched the bid (beyond what...

    Correct. So what's the problem?
  15. T

News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

So, Carlton used picks in the 20s to match a bid on pick 3. It's not as bad as the Nick Daicos draft, but it's clearly unders. The splitting of first round picks to harvest points is exactly the problem that these changes will address.

News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

Yep, the new rules will deliver something closer to fair value. I guess we'll find out whether clubs start dialing back their investment in academies as a result of the changes. Key point: clubs still get priority access (i.e. the option of matching a bid on tied players), so there's still a...

News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

I don't want to be too critical since you're actually putting up some ideas. But by the looks of things, you've massively extended the number of picks that attract points in the DVI system from what we currently have (I think currently anything less than pick 45 or something doesn't have any...

News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

The claim that the likes of Richmond will lodge an early bid on the tied player in order to get the 2nd round compensation is complete speculation and unlikely to be true. The only way that Richmond is bidding on Walker is if they'd actually prefer to draft him than anyone else available (in...

News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

It's not the worst idea, but that would be more restrictive that rules just announced (not less). Clubs are still able to match a bid on the first round. Your changes would prevent them from doing this.

News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

I'm not sure where I stand on compensation, but the bolded bit is exactly why they are compensated. They are prevented from selecting the player they want as that player is tied to another club. Well, not really anymore. The benefit of the "2-pick-to-match" rule is that the draft order will...

So, if the academy player (18 year old, no experience) is too big a risk to be parting with someone like Chad Warner, then we won't do it. If we want that academy player badly enough (and there's likely to be an early bid on him), then the club will have to part with some serious quality to make...

Oh ffs. I asked why you think clubs getting academy players cheaply is a big problem while clubs getting father-sons cheaply isn't. You responded by providing a generic account of the differences between academies and father-sons. The massive underpayments clubs paid for father-sons raise the...

Cool. Thanks for the response. "Because it's a genetic lottery, it's fair that clubs get father-sons at a massive discount". Don't imagine that's about to convince anyone, but thanks for clarifying.

News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

Reasonable comment. But didn't they make changes to the DVI for the most recent draft, and we still saw GC and Carlton getting players cheaply via points-harvesting? I agree on keeping things simple, but a cap on the number of picks to match (whether it's two or three) makes sense to me. The...

News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

Yeah, you've said that a couple times now. Why, though? What is it about father-sons that makes it reasonable for clubs to expect to get them on the cheap? Just calling it 'laughable' isn't convincing anyone.
  29. T

News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

Father-sons and academies should attract the same rules. In both cases, clubs should be required to pay a fair value for the players they're bringing in. I'm actually not sure that there've been fewer very good father-sons than academy players, but that's irrelevant anyway. Even if there have...
