Hawthorn and Carlton - next big rivalry?

After the '86 and '87 grand finals, I definitely see Hawthorn and Carlton emerging as the next great rivalry of the '80s. Kernahan kicking goals down one end of the ground, Dermie the other, premierships on the line... In the 2020's? Meh, not so much...

Did the AFL drop the ball on women's footy?

On the standard of play, which has come up a lot in this thread, I think there's three big factors at play: 1) Full-time vs part-time players 2) Rapid expansion 3) Development pathways It's important to note the differences here between equal pay, fully professional, and part time. You don't...

Did the AFL drop the ball on women's footy?

Given the ratings and the amount of public attention the Matildas have received in recent weeks, I'm wondering whether the AFL stuffed up by being too cautious with the launch of the AFLW? Back in 2016, the Hampson-Hardeman Cup between the Bulldogs and the Dees was the most-watched game in...

Analysis How different would today's AFL landscape be if the 1989 merger between Fitzroy and Footscray went ahead, and would that club have been succesful ?

A lot of these posts assume the merger would have worked out, but that's far from given. Just look at the NRL and the NBL. The North Melbourne Giants and South East Melbourne Magic merged, and then after a few seasons the merged Titans fell over and disappeared. In other cases, the bigger...

Would original expansion clubs have greater support if they named themselves after a state/area?

The name Perth is used. Two main reasons: There was already a Perth (along with an Easy Perth and West Perth) in the WAFL. Secondly, the WA Football Commission thought it was adding a team to the VFL until a genuinely national competition came along. We're still waiting for it.

Would original expansion clubs have greater support if they named themselves after a state/area?

Really good point. They do an absolutely horrendous job of promoting themselves in the surrounding suburbs. I have to travel fairly regularly through the nearby suburbs — Strathfield, Burwood (the Sydney one), Rhodes, Wentworth Point, Newington — and I can't remember ever seeing anything...

    Footy in Queensland

Long term, I think Canberra should get the 20th AFL side, ahead of either an additional club in any other state. As for the strength of talent coming out of Queensland and NSW, the big picture story is that it's a big step towards making sure the northern expansion clubs (Gold Coast and GWS)...

Would original expansion clubs have greater support if they named themselves after a state/area?

GWS would almost certainly have had greater support if they were called the Western Sydney Giants, or even the Parramatta Giants. Given the rapid development of the Parramatta CBD, a case could be made that the club should be based in Parramatta and play it's home games there, rather than at...

Are key defenders the least important players on a list?

Key defenders don't matter at all... ...as long as you don't mind the other team's key forwards taking uncontested marks right in front of goal. Oh, what's that? You don't want the other team's full forward to have free reign in the goal square? You want someone tall who can spoil? Or...

Analysis Hawthorn rebuild: are they tanking?

In hindsight, I'd be inclined to say they should have kept one of the three for an extra season or two. Hodgey was cooked by that point, but Sam Mitchell and Lewis still had another good season left in them. That way, instead of losing Brad Hill, Hodge, Mitchell, and Lewis in one offseason...

Analysis Hawthorn rebuild: are they tanking?

I'd add the fact that the whole reason we brought in Vickery was to plug the gap left after Roughy's cancer returned. The club had brought over O'Rourke from GWS, but ongoing injury issues ended his career early. Ty was a free agent who cost little overall. Sometimes, for a range of reasons...

    Unofficial Preview Round 2, 2023: Swans v Hawks, SCG 1:10pm March 26th

Right now, with Mitch Lewis out, we have Breust, and we have Dylan Moore who didn't hit the scoreboard today, and we have... Who? Breust kicked three goals today. Two of our defenders (Jiath and Hardwick) kicked three goals between them. Greene, Amon, and Wingard (before getting injured)...

    Unofficial Preview Round 2, 2023: Swans v Hawks, SCG 1:10pm March 26th

Reeves is also still in that awkward stage that a lot of tall kids go through in their early 20s, where he still hasn't grown into his body yet. Big, gangly frame with little bulk. He is likely to bulk out a bit more over the next year or two, and his physical presence in contests will improve...

Opinion AFL 2023 Round 1 - Liked, Learnt, Hated

Liked: North in the eight. Great start to the Clarko era. Learnt: Port Adelaide could be a threat this year. The Bulldogs are a long way off the mark. What happened to Brisbane? Hated: Collingwood look the goods. Long season ahead for the Hawks.

    Unofficial Preview Round 2, 2023: Swans v Hawks, SCG 1:10pm March 26th

The forward line looks to be a real issue at the moment. Is it time to consider moving Sic up forward again? Also, Hardwick up forward provided a few of the highlights of that last quarter. Perhaps he should start up forward over the next few weeks?
