100% agreed. I was so confused at that selection because there was still a lot of key position talent on the board, but then I realised we really need a shutdown small-medium defender
That would make sense. I just don't know why Hawthorn should take Watson. Sure he's a great talent but it would be mad to pass on Curtin given how many players we can roll through as "small forwards" with our current list. Key position stocks are weak for us.
If Watson is available at Pick 7 (after Walter bid), do the Demons take him?
I really thought the Dogs would be more keen on Watto but seems like they'd actually take Sanders over him, which I find strange.
Guys are all these "rumours" actually legit or are people just throwing hypotheticals all over the place? Not sure whether these reports are based on clubs actually saying they will take a certain player.
Anyone know many father sons/academy prospects are projected to finish high in next years draft?
If the number is high, that would consolidate my endorsement of trading out F1 for Pick 8 this year :)
Those Ashcroft boys are something else. Imagine getting the best player in the draft twice in 3 years despite finishing top 2 and making finals runs in all of those years.
Well I can see a bit of that but I'm not talking about his personality. I meant the year he had in 2017 I think was pretty darn good considering we had like no talent.
You have 4 midfielders on the bench...
The forward line seems reasonable. I'd just switch Weddle & Ward (more versatility off the bench), MacKenzie to HB for Impey and have CJ on the bench instead of Impey.
Burto got robbed. He was one of my faves at the time and probably our best young player. I loved Chad at the Power too especially during his AA year, he was electric. So I had mixed emotions about that one but it still hurt losing Burton. Clarko really ruined that.
I agree with your last point but everything else hmmm.. You can't really blame Sam Mitchell for this rebuild. You do realise Clarko was the one who got JOM, Mitchell, Wingard. He also got Scully & Patton. It was an absolute shitshow. S.Mitchell had enough of this, that's why he shipped Mitchell...
Here comes more pessimism. Have you not watched us play this year?? There's so much potential that we've already stacked together on the same list, so how's it a half hearted list build??
Yes, we're not hitting the draft hard but we can still be aggressive by trading our F1 to get more top end...
My bad.
I totally mixed free agency up with the trade period.
But what I meant by assets is like if we're going to try and get B.King or McDonald, we'd have to give up a bounty of picks?? And other teams are more prepared for that than us.
I'm not sure if FA looks all that appealing despite...
I don't think our assets are enough to land a big free agent next year tbh. If we do go down that route, it should be filling in holes in our list. It's not next year or bust. If we get more competitive, we can chase free agents in 2025 and the years that follow. Plus other teams have more...
We should cash in on F1 for another top 10 pick this year. Our system still has a lot of talent even in the VFL. Bring these boys in early and get them developing ASAP. They'll grow together and be ready to go when we hit our strides. Waiting an entire year to repeat the same process when we...
Clearly it's a risk not everyone is willing to take. Which means any trade of F1 will likely be during the draft itself, if anything.
So essentially WCE & North do their thing. Harley likely to stay at the Eagles at this stage, but if North blink and give up BOTH Pick 2 & 3 for Pick 1, then...
I think the direction we're heading in, we're willing to take some risks. If trading out F1 into the top 7 or 8 this year is possible, we'll definitely be considering it. I wouldn't worry about missing out on next years draft at the moment. Our list has a lot of young players who have barely...
There's one in this draft which is Harley Reid. We're not getting that type any time soon. Will Day is the closest we've got if he can add some goal kicking to his arsenal. We have enough mids to cover for him for short periods.
Next minute...
With Pick Number 8, the GWS Giants have drafted... NATE CADDY from the Northern Knights.
I wouldn't actually be surprised if they did. Hogan is 28 but no guarantee to be in their long-term plans. I can see Cadman & Caddy making some forward line they'd build around.
O'Sullivan will be there most likely at 8.
Guaranteed one of Caddy, Sanders, O'Sullivan. All could be guns. Even if we get the mid, the kid's that good I think we still win that.
Now that would be a lot more interesting than just throwing a F1 with so much uncertainty around it.
Let's say the rest of the order stands and we trade F1 for Pick 8. Even if WCE say no, we can use it on two gun prospects!
Polak, Clarke, Sampi, Molan, and Power. That's 5 out of the top 10, including 2 of the top 5. You can make an argument that all of them had "talent" in their draft years or at least I hope so because that's why they were selected that high. But look at their careers like it's got something like...
Lol don't take the word "bum" too seriously - I just said it because we're all usually so hyped up about top 5 picks as becoming some kind of 250+ game superstar, when in reality it's almost always not the case. Not all these high end picks we talk about even get to 100 games let alone achieve...
In every draft there's always at least 1 and sometimes even 2 or 3 picks in the top 5 who're almost certainly bums. The only exception is 2018 (Walsh, Lukosius, Rankine, King (StK), Rozee).
History says this is almost always the case. Who came after Hodge, Ball, and Judd? Who knows??
So what...
It's a tough choice to make. Watson is good albeit a little overrated. Curtin is also a bit overrated in some aspects. Duursma would be the ideal option for us because he's a weapon both aerially and at ground level. Instead of focusing on Reid, we should turn our attention to Duursma. I don't...
