List Mgmt. 2023 List Management and Trading (Part 2)

I don't know if the rules have changed in the past couple of years, but you used to be able to 'bank' TPP underspend from the past three years. So going into 2024 for example, we'd be able to use any cap underspend from 2021, 2022 and 2023. The restriction was that you could only go 5% over the...

List Mgmt. 2023 List Management and Trading

The AFL releases a list across the whole league to show how many players are in each band. Ie 3 players on $1m plus, 5 players between $900k - $1m etc. They don't break it down by club. Not enough info to narrow it down to individual players (by design).

I agree with your thoughts generally regarding the AFL, however the TPP department within the AFL is siloed from the rest of the organisation and is tight lipped and trust worthy.

List Mgmt. 2023 List Management and Trading

Take these articles with a huge grain of salt. They're 90% guesswork by AFL journos. Most that i've been able to cross check in the past have been laughably wrong. Teams spend a lot of time and effort trying to work this type of thing out, trying to work out what a rival team's salary cap...

List Mgmt. 2023 List Management and Trading

Not these days. I found working in the AFL system to be a bit 'too much of a good thing' and it tended to kill my enjoyment of the game a little. Supporting a different club than the one you're working for is very common. Probably only a third of employees grew up supporting the club. This was...

List Mgmt. 2023 List Management and Trading

At various points of the season, before the draft, before the season etc. Clubs submit a detailed salary estimate to the AFL to show that they'll be under the cap. It's basically a spreadsheet where you enter in all of your players, their base salaries, and an estimate of the number of games...

List Mgmt. 2023 List Management and Trading

A player's salary is made up of all sorts of incentives, and changes week by week depending on the amount of games they play and other milestones they hit. Even the club paying the salary doesn't know what the player's total salary will be for the year until well after the season has finished...

I used to do the salary cap for a Vic based club. They aren't getting any special treatment when it comes to cap space.

    Traded Izak Rankine traded to Adelaide with #46 & F4 (Freo) for #5, F3 & F4

Funny, I used to work in an AFL Club's finance department. One of my duties was signing as witness on player contracts. Funnily enough, I (or anyone else at the Club) never had to sign a NDA. What role are you in that you have a NDA?

News Brad Crouch decision (ADL chickenshit, decline to match, receive 23)

No, the players have a mandated break from organised training. You can tell that none of the players are wearing official gear.

News Brad Crouch to Saints (STK make offer; Band 3, ADL to match?)

Every player would quickly have crazy unachievable incentives included in their contacts for no other reason than free agency compensation. Every player would receive band 1 compensation
  13. courageous_tom

News Brad Crouch to Saints (STK make offer; Band 3, ADL to match?)

Too easily exploited. Player earns $400k base + incentive of $600k if he kicks more than 150 goals in a season. Under your scenario, the compo would be calculated on $1m a season.

News Brad Crouch to Saints (STK make offer; Band 3, ADL to match?)

Yes individual player performance triggers (individual games played, B&F results, goals scored, All Australian selection etc) need to get matched, team triggers (team makes finals / top 4) don't
  15. courageous_tom

News Brad Crouch to Saints (STK make offer; Band 3, ADL to match?)

No. Incentives relating to team performance don't need to be matched. That's pretty clear.

News Brad Crouch to Saints (STK make offer; Band 3, ADL to match?)

That would be a team based incentive, and wouldn't need to be matched.

News Brad Crouch to Saints (STK make offer; Band 3, ADL to match?)

Because you could have ridicuolous incentives that the player couldn't realistically achieve, and would have the only purpose of inflating his contract value, and free agency compensation. Ie: Brad Crouch $600k per year for 4 years with an incentive each year of $400k if he wins the Coleman...

News Brad Crouch to Saints (STK make offer; Band 3, ADL to match?)

St Kilda should have structured if differently. Instead of $650k X 4 years (2.6m total) they should have done $800k X 3 years with a soft trigger for an extra year at a really low rate. Ie trigger = play one game in any of the three years, to get a 4th year contract at $200k. They pay the same...

News Brad Crouch to Saints (STK make offer; Band 3, ADL to match?)

It never happened in the time i was involved in the system. Most players are on 2 or 3 year deals, so there's always enough players coming out of contract each year deserving pay rises, that you're easily able to avoid the cap floor. If you know you're hovering around the bottom of the salary...

News Brad Crouch to Saints (STK make offer; Band 3, ADL to match?)

Yes. There is a separate component of the TPP which relates to ASAs. There is also a 'cap' on ASA's to stop Clubs putting all their player payments into ASA's. The ASA also needs to be justified to the AFL. You couldn't pay Lachlan Murphy $200k in an ASA for example, he's not famous enough!

News Brad Crouch to Saints (STK make offer; Band 3, ADL to match?)

I used to run the salary cap at an AFL Club. The upper tier players have two parts of their contract. The playing contract, and the ASA (additional services agreement). The playing contract can't be shuffled into a family trust to avoid tax, as you mentioned, it's personal services income. The...

The rumor is that he wants to leave, to join Rutten at Essendon. If you're trying to completely rebuild the playing list, you don't stop 28+ year olds with currency from walking out the door if they want to go.

2020 Trade & List Management discussion

Trading Talia right now is exactly what we should be doing. I expect his performance will decline significantly next year, and Hartigan can play his role. I have no idea why Essendon would go for a 28 year old player though. Crazy.

2020 Trade & List Management discussion

This is a ridiculous suggestion. You don't take up a valuable spot on the playing list, just to avoid going over the 'soft cap.' We are an extremely rich and well resourced club who can afford to breach the soft cap if we need to.
  27. courageous_tom

2020 Trade & List Management discussion

Maybe that's part of the problem. He plays like a banged up 32 year old, even though he's 28. He's already the slowest player on our list, and is only just getting to the age where players start to lose their pace. Big gamble to keep Talia and trade Hartigan imo

The answer depends on Talia. If Talia has another 2-3 years, then Hartigan is probably surplus to requirements, and you trade him out for a future second or something. I'm not convinced Talia has that long left in him though, so would rather keep Hartigan to play the Talia role in the team over...
