Autopsy Round 8, 2026: Hawks bottle it

There’s one tension in this game I still haven’t wrapped my head around. Everyone talks about how our midfield dominated. But we just couldn’t score. I know part of that (a large part) was the flood, but I think it was also our decision making and ability to execute in the middle. On the...

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn : Nick 'the Wizard' Watson! Rising star Nom!

Do any of the biomechanics experts out there know whether Watson's running style will lend itself to better stamina over time? I would love to see him even more involved, but those bursts must be exhausting. I'm wondering whether one day we'll see him nearly permanently in the middle.

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Matt Hill! CatB rookie, ex-Storm

Don’t disagree he’s far off. Just don’t think he’s earned it yet given the competition for spots. Who does he play instead of? He’ll definitely get another contract.

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Matt Hill! CatB rookie, ex-Storm

Completely different roles. Great talent, but needs a bigger body of work to be any where near a promotion. Good news is that there’s lots of guys pushing for a promotion. Sorts nice to have both teams up in the top handful on the ladder.

    Preview Round 9, 2026: Fremantle v Hawthorn, 7 May 2026, 8.10pm AEST @ Optus Stadium

I think the 7 day break will be huge for us. I believe part of the reason we were not as clean is the 5 day break off back-to-back-to-back big games. Given that, I think we’ll keep changes simple. Outs: Sic or Scrim pending Sic fitness; Magginess Ins: Butler and Perez The Freo match will tell...

Player Watch Welcome to Hawthorn : Jai “Duke” Newcombe - 2024 Peter Crimmins medalist - extends to 2032!

If the system was that simple and predictable I’d agree with you. But human psychology plays into it. Let’s see what the coaches votes say, but I’d assume some pies defenders will get a look in as well. Maynard, etc.

Autopsy Round 8, 2026: Hawks bottle it

Is there anywhere to find histories of this? Surely we're nearly in record territory re opponents kicking above their expected scores.

Doubt it. Hawks were heavy favourites. They'll recognise Pies ability to stop us getting the W.

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn : Nick 'the Wizard' Watson! Rising star Nom!

I feel like a "really special game" has become the norm. Some of the things he does we would be worshipping other players over, but we've now come to accept as common place. But year - a 20 touch 5 goal game will come in the next 6-12 months.

I was wondering this. How big is the protected area meant to be?

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Connor MacDonald! Extended to 2029!

That was my quick reaction too, without seeing stats. I don't see him as a half forward who hits in the middle. He's a midfielder who spends time at half forward now.

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn - Mabior Chol

We missed Cholly massively today. His ability to disrupt down back would have gone a long way to keeping the ball in the 50. Both ML And Dear looked very sluggish. Get better soon Chols Royce!

    Game Day Round 8, 2026: Collingwood v Hawthorn, 7.30pm @ MCG

Pies are playing well and we're just not converting our opportunities. How are those people who thought we'd win by 60 feeling?

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn : Pick 7, Cam MacKenzie, extends to 2026!

It's important to differentiate the roles of midfielders. There's the 20-40 CBAs a game, but then there's the 50% of game time the ball is in between/transitioning between the arcs. Just because we might have Newc, Day, Nash at 90% of CBAs, doesn't mean they spend 90% of time between the arcs...

    Preview Round 8, 2026: Collingwood v Hawthorn, 30 April 2026, 7.30pm @ MCG

I hope you're right. Lots of good reasons to turn up switched on. Will be a good test of Sammy's coaching to see if he can make it happen.

    Preview Round 8, 2026: Collingwood v Hawthorn, 30 April 2026, 7.30pm @ MCG

My main concern is that we don't come in as fired up as we have been the last three weeks. If we don't have our pressure we won't make it work.

2026 Trade/Free agent targets for HFC

I'm definitely not. Like others, I think Lewis adds a lot more value to the side than Ben King. His running, creating space, pressure, pressure releasing marks, and leadership, is critical to our team. I know BK has the runs on the board in terms of goals/games, but I'd be backing Mitch in to...

Mega Thread The Father-Son Mega thread - 2026 update

FFS. Trust the AFL to take something that could be relatively simple and really f^%K it up. For those that can't be bothered clicking: "Under the new rules, it can be revealed that teams who finish in the top two on the ladder will have to pay a levy of 20 per cent on top of where their bids...

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Matthew LeRay

Has anyone got any insight into how Leray is doing? I saw the incident on the broadcast out of the corner of my eye (didn't realise at the time it was him), but haven't heard anything further. It looked pretty nasty - hope he's ok.

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn : Pick 7, Cam MacKenzie, extends to 2026!

You're right. I picked Harley in this year's fantasy draft expecting him to come on, but even the Wonder Kid is still performing at a very average level and he was only picked a year later.

    Toast Coaches' votes 2026 edition

What a great spread. I would expect us to get up to circa 20 on the list by end of year, including: Ward, Mackenzie, Chol and Dear all going well. D'Ambrosio likely to get on there too.

    Toast Coaches' votes 2026 edition

Great to see Amon and Scrim added to the list. Such a good spread. Also, just generally happy to see Scrim get a vote. Hopefully good for the confidence.

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn : Pick 7, Cam MacKenzie, extends to 2026!

While I've been a critic of Cam's this season, I think the issue is that he's building his skill set already. My guess is that he's been encouraged by Sam to work on his ability to stop, prop, assess, and then propel. That's why we're seeing an over indexing to that type of behaviour at the...
