Why Were Essendon So Highly Fancied Before Round 1?

Long-time member, first time positing in a long while. Something has me puzzled - Why we're Essendon so highly fancied before Round 1? This isn't a "hindsight hero" call, or an attempt to "stick it up" the Bombers or sink the boots in. I wondered this when Mick Malthouse tipped the Don's to win...

Roast Treloar’s partner fumes after being made the ‘scapegoat’ by Collingwood

Why can't Treloar and/or Stephenson have been at fault in their own way too? To me it sounds just as much like they're immature and can't accept feedback and criticism as much as anything else.

Roast Treloar’s partner fumes after being made the ‘scapegoat’ by Collingwood

It wasn't put in nearly such extreme terms, and wasn't the reason. The media are still choosing to frame it that way though, because it makes for more of a sexy scandal.

Roast Treloar’s partner fumes after being made the ‘scapegoat’ by Collingwood

Buckley confirmed in far less sensational terms that it was a factor that was discussed. I'd be more surprised if it wasn't discussed, TBH. Pretty tenuous grounds to sue, I'd imagine. Treloar is still earning $750K plus per year for the foreseeable future, and Collingwood don't have to keep him...

Roast Treloar’s partner fumes after being made the ‘scapegoat’ by Collingwood

It's not the reason. They've said it was a factor that they addressed, which is fair enough, considering the couple have a young kid, and Treloar has had mental and physical struggles in recent years.

Something is on the nose...and it's Collingwood

It sounds like you're choosing to interpret it a particular way. That's fine, too. Buckley and the club have their perspective, and you as an outsider have yours. Perhaps there isn't a "hostile environment" to address?

Something is on the nose...and it's Collingwood

Buckley fully addressed that. Read the quotes in the article on the AFL website.

Something is on the nose...and it's Collingwood

I would suggest you re-read the quotes again.

Something is on the nose...and it's Collingwood

It was direct quotes from a radio interview. There wasn't really much blaming happening.

Recommitted Josh Dunkley [OOC 2022, requested a trade to Essendon, didn't get there]

I feel like they can/should play with: C - Bailey Smith - Jack Macrae - Lachie Hunter R - Tim English - Marcus Bontempelli - Adam Treloar I - Stefan Martin (Ruck) - Josh Dunkley (Centre) - Tom Liberatore (Rover) - Caleb Daniel (Wing, less of a defensive liability if used there)

Something is on the nose...and it's Collingwood

The quotes from Buckley's interview this morning published on the AFL website today are actually very fair and reasonable IMO. He acknowledged the club's mistakes in the process, while also clarifying the club's perspective, without "biting back" in an emotive or vitriolic manner. Whether you...

Strategy So, if a club just decided to walk someone to the PSD?

Exactly. It has never made any logical sense.

Strategy So, if a club just decided to walk someone to the PSD?

Yes. Get rid of the PSD, Rookie Draft and Rookie Lists though. One National Draft with 5 picks per team per year (for players who have never been on an AFL list before only) should be sufficient. I mainly feel that free agency should be free-er, and uncontracted players shouldn't be tradeable.

Not going by this and other threads, and the media's reaction.

Something is on the nose...and it's Collingwood

Eh, I don't even take any notice of what Eddie McGuire says or does.
  16. Damon_3388

Something is on the nose...and it's Collingwood

I didn't say that. There does seem to be a much higher volume of non-Collingwood people upset about this than Collingwood fans, though.

Something is on the nose...and it's Collingwood

Come on now, it's not that serious. I hope you're as moralistic and such a human rights activist outside of professional athletes getting traded to another team too.

Something is on the nose...and it's Collingwood

Or they could have just miscalculated, without any attempted cover-up. Mistakes happen, some unforseen things happen, and so on. Why does everyone instantly assume everything in the AFL is some organised crime style deception?
  19. Damon_3388

Something is on the nose...and it's Collingwood

I've completely accepted it, can see the reasons for it, and how it can make us a better side in 2021. I don't feel like I'm "owed an explanation", and there's not some collective group-think among the supporters, either. I'm an adult who is capable of forming my own opinions and conclusions...

Strategy So, if a club just decided to walk someone to the PSD?

I don't really care if they do. I also feel like they eventually can grow and develop a club just like everyone else did once upon a time.
  21. Damon_3388

Something is on the nose...and it's Collingwood

Non-Collingwood supporters are far more aggrieved and up in arms about this than actual Collingwood supporters are. Why?

Traded Adam Treloar [traded with #26, #33 and #42 to Bulldogs for #14 and 2021 R2]

Depends on their standing within the group, the mental make-up of the remaining players, and how it is handled and managed by the non-playing staff. It feels like through trades, delistings, and retirements, Collingwood has consciously and deliberately removed those who aren't physically or...

    2021 Wooden Spoon

So you're agreeing that Sydney are as much a spoon contender as the others then?

Traded Adam Treloar [traded with #26, #33 and #42 to Bulldogs for #14 and 2021 R2]

So any criticism seems to involve changing the past, prior to the trade period. We were where we were by that stage, for better or worse. Rewinding to the start of the trade period, what would you have done differently from a Collingwood perspective, in the situation you were in? Would you have...

Traded Adam Treloar [traded with #26, #33 and #42 to Bulldogs for #14 and 2021 R2]

The truth. English is still woefully underdeveloped physically for his role, and Martin is cooked.
  27. Damon_3388

Traded Adam Treloar [traded with #26, #33 and #42 to Bulldogs for #14 and 2021 R2]

To be honest, I couldn't care less what spin the media or the club put on it. I'm not sure why opposition supporters would either. I can see what the objective was, and I'm comfortable with the outcome. I can foresee a way that it could make us a better side going forward, too. IMO, it's not...

Strategy So, if a club just decided to walk someone to the PSD?

I still don't think a player should be tradeable currency if they are uncontracted. They should be able to just sign with another club if they want when their contract ends. Trades should only be for contracted players. If you lose a player, you lose a player. No compensation picks or...
