Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Pick 18, Josh Weddle - Round 10, Rising Star!

Weddle's numbers as a back are actually pretty similar to those of Scrimshaw, Frost and Sicily. The talk about him squibbing a contest was complete BS - he has always put his body on the line. The dropped mark was because he was distracted by the player coming in to spoil, not because he was...

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Josh Ward. Extends to 2025!

His voting in the PCM last year indicates a decent level of consistency. Getting back to Ward, I don't see any reason for concern. He is building nicely in his own quiet way.

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn : Jack Ginnivan!

He has exceeded my expectations. Seemed like a bit of a show pony playing for Collingwood. With us there is still a trace of that but the work rate and pressure is great. A bit of Frostball from him on Sunday. Hope he gets a hold of that faster than its inventor.

    Preview Round 7, 2024 : Hawks v Swans, 4pm Sunday 28th April, MCG

Yep - I always thought he could play anywhere on the field but ruck - and then, there he was looking perfectly comfortable in the ruck. Didn't win the contest but didn't make a fool of himself. This guy is a genuine freak.

Autopsy Round 6, 2024 : Hawks skittle Roos

Nothing wrong with Nash's decision-making and his foot skills are better than they look (they look awful). His biggest weakness is that he is Birchall-like overhead. If he could take a contested mark overhead he would be a serious weapon. At the moment he is mainly a contested ball beast and...

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn : Calsher Dear!

From what I have seen of him, he is what is commonly referred to as a "natural footballer". This means that he already knows what do do on the field to have be best impact. He doesn't have to learn leading patterns, defensive responses or structures because they are already automatic. He will...

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Pick 18, Josh Weddle - Round 10, Rising Star!

Weddle and Day are our elite players. Next level are Sicily, Moore and Newcombe After them are a crowd of capable to very good players. One more elite and one more next level should enough. MacKenzie, Ward and Croc could easily develop into next level players.

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn : Lloyd Meek

Of course not - he has gone from #1 ti #2. Chol and Gamma are both part-timers. There is every chance that Reeves will recover his spot. He just has to work on his game.

Autopsy Round 4, 2024 : Hawks get Pied

The Weddle missed mark has been over-egged on this forum. He had a momentary lapse off concentration when he became aware that another player was closing in on him. He often throws himself into aerial contests against much bigger bodies and wins them as often as he loses them. Just one of...

Yep, we would be pretty happy to see Lewis producing these numbers.

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn : Calsher Dear!

Paul played a lot of reserves footy before getting a regular gig in the seniors. I reckon Calsher will be playing regular AFL footy as early as mid next year. Wouldn't be at all surprised if he got a few games this year. Seems like a natural third tall forward. Lewis, Chol and Dear will...

    Preview Round 3, 2024: Hawthorn v Geelong, 1st April 3:20pm MCG

Quite right - Nash's games were not even poor. They just weren't great - but he still managed 5 clearances vs Melbourne compared with Worpel (3) and Newcombe (2).

    Preview Round 3, 2024: Hawthorn v Geelong, 1st April 3:20pm MCG

Nash on Stewart would be a disaster. Stewart would kill him overhead. It is also important to bear in mind that while Nash did not have a great day in the guts on Saturday, he was the only one with respectable clearance numbers (the same number as Worpel and Newcombe combined) and did his...

    Preview Round 2, 2024: Hawthorn v Melbourne, MCG 4.35pm 23rd March

I thought Nash had a reasonable game. He created a lot of space for Worpel in the centre square and did some good things around the ground. Not a great game but it was serviceable and he had some impact.

Autopsy Round 1, 2024: Hawks fail against Bombers

I don't think that is right. We were patchy and fumbly but got plenty of forward entries and always looked dangerous in the forward half. The last ten minutes we faded a bit (except for Weddle who still had plenty of run).

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn : Nick 'the Wizard' Watson!

He may need some time at BH but I would give him another chance before taking that decision.

Autopsy Round 1, 2024: Hawks fail against Bombers

Strange game. We didn't play well, some of our better players put in ordinary games and our goal kicking was awful but we were right in it up until the last 10 minutes. Ginnivan and Worpel both faded. Sam clearly has a game plan and doesn't seem all that fussed about premiership points. I...

List Mgmt. Hawk's List Management 2024

I watched him closely in the OR game vs C'wood. He did a few nice things but did not get a lot of ball and seemed to tire in the last quarter when he laid off a Frost standard hand pass straight to a Giants player and conceded a goal. Not yet convinced that he is worth $1m per season.

Preview 2024 Preseason: Hawks v Dogs in Tassie

I thought we should have picked up Wanganeen-Milera - he is a class player. However, I am more than happy with Ward's progress and confident he will do us proud over the long haul.

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Josh Ward. Extends to 2025!

I don't understand the angst. As I have said before, Ward is a quiet achiever. He is not flamboyant or in your face but he understands his role, gets to good positions and executes well. I expect him to be a 200+ game player.

Training 2024 Preseason reports and discussion

On Scrimshaw, what I am noticing is that he seems to have more body strength, which is very important in a KPD.
