Officials to carry can if WADA finds wrongdoing at Essendon - Baker/Mckenzie - The Age

If the players have chosen to sign a confidentiality agreement before they've taken all reasonable steps to determine the substance was legal (i.e. consulted the AFLPA or ASADA) then I think they're still in trouble. You can't just be allowed to sign away your rights and get away with taking...

The AFL, WAFC and SANFL - and the WA/SA AFL Clubs

I understand what you're saying here, but something for you to think about. How much of the $1 billion+ going into the new stadium will be 'footy money' and how much of it will have come from 'non-footy' areas (i.e the taxpayers of WA)? Does footy really deserve to retain management rights and...

    Reserves to Return

I'm not so sure it's a simple case of a money grab but more a means of controlling the number of stand alone teams - I don't think the VFL are interested in becoming an AFL reserves competition with a handful of VFA teams.

    AFL Reserves

Was it the AFL or the AFL Victoria (I think these are two 'separate' bodies, with the VAFL controlling the VFL competition)? The AFL seem to be very quiet on the whole reserves team issue. If they believe it's imperative for all clubs to have their own reserves team for player development then...

AFL continue campaign to restructure WA footy

Isn't the difference here that North supporters (at the time as they weren't 'members') pushed for the club to move to a membership based structure? I haven't seen any concerted push by either West Coast or Fremantle supporters for the same thing to happen. If everyone is happy with the status...

AFL continue campaign to restructure WA footy

And this is what most West Australians also want. WA footy is going along pretty well right now - it would be hard to argue that any other state is financially in a better place across all levels, including the AFL run states. Why change something that is clearly working well? That's where...

AFL continue campaign to restructure WA footy

This thread has become more interesting as it's gone on. There seem to be two distinct groups - those who want to see the licences handed to the clubs and those who don't. What's interesting is that the group who wants to see the licences handed over are those who probably have the most to...

AFL continue campaign to restructure WA footy

The WAFL don't own any AFL licences. The WAFC own the two WA AFL licences and they are a separate, independent body to the WAFL. The WAFL maintain control of issues such as new clubs in their competition. I don't think this is quite the case in WA. The WAFC exists to oversee and safeguard...

AFL continue campaign to restructure WA footy

I understand the discrepancies in funding for junior development etc across the AFL and that the WA teams in particular pay a disproportionate amount. The reality is though, that neither West Coast or Fremantle are their own clubs. They are owned by the WAFC so it's up to the WAFC how their...

AFL continue campaign to restructure WA footy

And how long do you think it will take for the WAFL or SANFL to go broke after the AFL takes the licences away? That's the end game. It's all about money and control. Either the WAFL and SANFL roll over and do as they are told, or they will suddenly find the money starts to dry up. The AFL...

    Foxtel Cup change of format

What difference does it make? Your proposal would have a similar impact on all states and teams you've mentioned. $1m+ spread across 9 teams is only just over $100k per club (assuming the split was even and I imagine there would be issues with that anyway) - hardly the kind of money clubs...

    Foxtel Cup change of format

A few questions: What's in it for the state league clubs that have to disrupt their teams every week (please don't just say money, believe it or not, there are some things that mean more to these clubs)? How many players can afford to travel interstate mid-week given they are not...

WAFL FANS UNITE! - Say NO to Reserves Teams

Do you think they'll keep that up all year Kwality? Especially if the numbers start heading the wrong way?
  14. G

WAFL FANS UNITE! - Say NO to Reserves Teams

Unlikely. All VFL alignments are in place until at least the end of 2014 and the VFL will not allow these to be broken, meaning no more stand-alone teams for Victorian AFL clubs. I can't see them allowing the two WA clubs to do that when they won't allow their own to do it.

WAFL FANS UNITE! - Say NO to Reserves Teams

How does increasing the number of clubs (and therefore players) improve the quality of the competition? Players who aren't good enough to play league now will be getting a game to make up the numbers. That equals a decrease in quality for mine. There's also the dilution in coaching staff...

    Eagles Players in Twitter War

What's this got to do with AFL reserves teams? Unless of course you're suggesting they have reserves teams and only play each other, thereby only being able to belt other AFL players behind play rather than kids doing everything they can to get drafted.

    Eagles Players in Twitter War

'Throwing an elbow back', particularly when you know someone is standing behind you, is a dog act. There's always a high risk that it could connect with the head and has been seen numerous times, elbows can cause a lot of damage when they connect with a head.

Perth vs West Coast 2nd Tier @ Brownes Stadium

The problem is West Coast is trying to sell the concept to a group of people who have some serious misgivings about it. It doesn't help when one of the big questions is 'where are the extra players going to come from?' and for the first practice match you can't even field a team. When you add...

HS; Andrew Krakouer's mental health issues prompt concussion link probe

Players used to stay off the ground and miss the following week if they suffered a concussion. In recent history, more often than not players were back out on the field in the same game. The rules around concussion possibly help this, but it makes you wonder whether there shouldn't be a...

MVP Jaeger O'Meara; 'good enough, old enough'. not in AFL.

What's the point of this thread? Everyone knew O'Meara wouldn't be allowed to play this year before he was selected. Whining about the rules now is not going to change anything.

    Reserves teams

Surely if more games = more attendance then that's also about the dollars? Why should the WAFL clubs have to wear the risk that those dollars don't cover their costs? West Coast and Freo have plenty of money and the WAFL have something they want. Apparently a reserves side would help them win...

    Reserves teams

The WAFL clubs are concerned about the integrity of their competition, hence they've ruled out allowing the two AFL clubs to enter their own clubs into the competition. The current proposal and discussion would see the AFL clubs play the WAFL team/s with the bye each week. Re the...

    Reserves teams

The problem for the AFL clubs is that at the moment the WAFL have them over a barrel. What options do they really have? The AFL aren't in any hurry to create a stand alone reserves competition, the VFL are agitated about too many Victorian AFL clubs wanting stand alone teams and the SANFL...
  27. G

    Reserves teams

What makes you think they'd dominate? Collingwood and Geelong don't dominate the VFL competition and both have stronger/deeper squads than West Coast or Fremantle. As Kwality said, there are a number of AFL listed players who don't get a senior WAFL game because they're simply not good enough...
  28. G

    Reserves teams

The WAFC is responsible for all levels of WA football and so need to be fair and reasonable with all levels of WA football. I don't see the WAFL clubs trying to bypass the WAFC, it's more that the AFL clubs want to participate in the WAFL competition and can only do so with the approval of the...
  29. G

    Reserves teams

You can't compare the WAFL with the VFL. I don't know much about the structure of the VFL, but I do know that AFL Victoria are involved. There's your first problem. The WAFL have no AFL involvement. The competition belongs to the 9 clubs (with oversight from the WAFC). And just as an aside...

Sando wants a Crows reserves team in the SANFL

I don't know much about the SANFL/SA AFL club relationship but I do know that WAFL clubs would not be interested in the above. They have enough issues with the two AFL clubs pulling players when they like (often at short notice) or demanding players play at short notice. Having players who...
