Training 2026 Off-Season & Preseason reports and discussion

I posted this in the Will Day thread, and I hope it's OK for me to post this here as well. But after seeing Day re-injure himself again, I felt compelled to put something in writing in an attempt to make sense of it, but also as my way of dealing with it (I'm weird). If anyone's interested: As...

Player Watch Welcome to Hawthorn pick 13: Will Day 2023 PCM!

I hope it's OK for me to post this here and around the boards, but after seeing Day re-injure himself again, I felt compelled to put something in writing in an attempt to make sense of it, but also as my way of dealing with it (I'm weird). If anyone's interested, here's why I think we often...

Arrgh. That sucks for Will, he must be so frustrated and flat. Hope he’s back ASAP fighting fit.

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Ollie Greeves

The fact he slid to the rookie draft despite being so good as a junior obviously speaks to something clubs had an issue with. The thing that gives me the most hope is that we tried relatively hard to get him labelled as an NGA at the start of last year due to his indigenous background. There...

Training 2026 Off-Season & Preseason reports and discussion

Just on Sicily, where is he at? It sounds like he’s building, but is he 100% or expected to be early next year? It would have been nice for him to be one of those leading the charge as I think his injury affected output gets a little forgotten when thinking about how we can be better next year -...

Player Watch Welcome to Hawthorn pick 13: Will Day 2023 PCM!

Can anyone point me in the direction of the footage of Day running, or even in the gym? I’d love to take a look at him from my perspective. I had a quick look on the thread and can’t see anything which could be my browser not loading more than anything…

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Ollie Greeves

I reckon the great thing about Greeves more than most rookies is the scope to be anything. Rookies always have that sense about them, but being so well-credentialled leading into it really gives him that little boost for me. Maybe he doesn’t make it, but what if he does, and what if he kills it...

The guy to his right isn’t bad either!

Player Watch 2025 AFL Draft Thread (Welcome to our new Central Districts overlords!)

I think part of being a professional, well run club means you don’t let things get too heated or emotional when trying to make important decisions. I’d be disappointed if we didn’t look at Merrett again next year, if for no other reason than to see where it sits, assess how Essendon might...

Unofficial Preview 2025 Hawk's Hypothetical Trade Discussion...now with added DFA spitballing!

Any word on what we plan to do for the remaining spots? I’d selfishly still love us to target the two Frankston mature age guys and give them a trial for the SSP.

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Matthew LeRay

Poor Jack haha! Talk about a 4th wheel!

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Ollie Greeves

He certainly does look a little FIGJAM’ish especially with those goal celebrations. Hope he keeps his personality and develops into a really well-rounded AFL player for us. Excited to see how he goes!

Unofficial Preview 2025 Hawk's Hypothetical Trade Discussion...now with added DFA spitballing!

In a way I think it plays out similarly to when JOM and Mitchell were shipped off allowed others to step in and develop. Getting a Merrett probably gives the preferred outcome ASAP but hopefully those behind Worps now have their time to shine. All of Butler, Ward and Mackenzie and possibly even...

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Cam Nairn

Perhaps he could release Gunston to the mids 🤔

Player Watch 2025 AFL Draft Thread (Welcome to our new Central Districts overlords!)

Just on Hetherton, there was an article a few weeks ago on him and another kid who were both rated in the top handful of kids this time last year - but have slipped right down the pecking order. He has been impacted by injury this season and unable to get a clear run at it. I’d say he’s much...

Player Watch 2025 AFL Draft Thread (Welcome to our new Central Districts overlords!)

I’m a huge fan of trying to find the next mature age gun from the lower leagues. Geelong do it so well and I think it’s a great way to round out the list with later picks. I’d love us to have a crack at both Blamires and Voss from Frankston with our last pick/rookie pick. Todays FoxFooty...

Player Watch 2025 AFL Draft Thread (Welcome to our new Central Districts overlords!)

I think it’s interesting this year that the perspective of trading a first round pick come draft night appears to be different. On draft night, most teams wanting to trade up typically overpay for the privilege of getting in for the player they want - kind of like we did for Weddle. Yet a lot of...

Farrow looks fantastic to me. I’d say he’d play pretty soon as well - just looks like an AFL footballer.

This year would be a perfect year to draft the next Tim Kelly or Isaac Smith. Any decent mature agers on the radar?

Unofficial Preview 2025 Hawk's Hypothetical Trade Discussion...now with added DFA spitballing!

I would disagree, I thought he looked serviceable up forward. Good pressure, took some strong grabs and kicked a few goals. Would love him to become the next Josh Kennedy but he may not have that ceiling.

Unofficial Preview 2025 Hawk's Hypothetical Trade Discussion...now with added DFA spitballing!

The flip side is: why not try and add to genuine a-graders in the mids. They’re clearly better than guys like Nash and Worpel now, and possibly better than what Ward and Mackenzie will be. They’re all still good players, but we’d have to keep aiming high to be the best team in the league and...

Unofficial Preview 2025 Hawk's Hypothetical Trade Discussion...now with added DFA spitballing!

I think it’s also worth remembering that despite how well they played yesterday, scores were level and the game was even at half time. Yes, they broke Geelong essentially with one awesome quarter and walked it in in the last, but they still got smashed by the Cats in week one of the finals...

Unofficial Preview 2025 Hawk's Hypothetical Trade Discussion...now with added DFA spitballing!

There’s a world where Mackenzie, Ward, Butler are ready to take over in a few years as well if they all hang round. These guys plus Newcombe and Day are all still really young. Obviously would still need to bring another one or two in but hopefully that’s a Reid or established FA. Can always...

Unofficial Preview Sam and Tom break WA's brain and other Trade discussions 2025

Not saying we have it all together, but it seems like a few clubs are falling apart at the seems - at least at the moment. Carlton, WCE, Melbourne, Port under fire, Essendon. And that’s without even mentioning a few others that loss or two away from the blow torch. Is it just me or is this...

How good is it though? There’s a fair chance he’s actively doing the same behind the scenes.

Unofficial Preview Sam and Tom break WA's brain and other Trade discussions 2025

Chris Scott nailed it in his press conference earlier today. Was a very reasonable and mature take on Allen meeting Sam. I don’t think there’s really much more to be said about it. Towards the end of the presser.

Unofficial Preview Sam and Tom break WA's brain and other Trade discussions 2025

I agree with you here mate. I think Lyon is right in that he said as an elite sporting organisation it’s a big boy league. We should be doing what we are doing. But it’s also true that WCE should be doing similar. Whether it’s directly to Hawthorn or not, they should be going after players they...

Unofficial Preview Sam and Tom break WA's brain and other Trade discussions 2025

I think Chol would make the perfect 3rd tall/ ruck relief. His tackling pressure, mobility around the ground would see the best of him IMO. I love Dear but hes also still a kid and should be fighting it out for that last spot with Chol. Would be a huge luxury to have them both in that position.
  30. sven_inc

Is Mitch Lewis best 22 (23) when available?

A fit and healthy Lewis makes Chol better. He provides us even more flexibility in the form of a pack marking KPF. I’ve posted this before, but he’s everything we would want from a potential trade in target - big, strong, athletic, great age profile, not the finished product and leadership...
