Past #45: Red Óg Murphy - RIP - Murphy has passed away in Dublin aged 21 (April 2022)

For a young guy to take his own life and no...

Retired #45: Conor McKenna ☘️ - Returning to the AFL to play with Brisbane - 17/11

Big rumours in Ireland that McKenna is going back to Australia. Sounds a done deal with talk here. Essendon first dibs and take him back?

An unfortunate update to this thread, but Red Og Murphy passed away today.

News New Irish Recruit - Oisin Mullin...2022 edition

Looks like he learned a thing or two whilst in Geelong anyway. These are NAB cup type preseason games, so nothing to gauge him on. As for Mullin, it does look unusual to be so late leaving. Super player, similar mould to O Connor with good hard running and a good kick.

    Past Barry O'Connor - delisted 2022

Article about Barry, interview with his Dad. Promising from a Swans perspective to have parents being very supportive of his AFL career, although as I'd said earlier, I wouldn't expect anything less from George. http://hoganstand.com/article/index/311820

Welcome to the Adelaide Crows, Cathal McShane (narrator: he didn't come)

Most GAA players, especially at the top end, get their share of perks. Would get a handy job set up for them if not qualified in sales or marketing or something. Some may get a car sponsorship deal too. They would use their name as best they can to advance themselves in the absence of actually...

Welcome to the Adelaide Crows, Cathal McShane (narrator: he didn't come)

Keystone manufacture insulated steel lintels. The fact that the manager of the football team is at a press photo release of McShane getting a job says it all really. Rumours of £60k per year, a car and a site bought for him to build on. Decent package for a lad who basically just has to sell...

    Past Barry O'Connor - delisted 2022

thats exactly it. No player here dreams of playing AFL, it's something that might come along if they are decent at 18 or 19 and give a trial a go and then maybe a trip out to Australia for a trial. If it works, great, if it doesnt, so be it. It's a contributory factor to failure rates of Irish...

    Past Barry O'Connor - delisted 2022

Without knowing the actual success rate or hit rate of a drafted rookie, but is it any different to that? There are what, up to 80 players drafted every year, 40 or so through the rookie draft (with players doubled up being re entered this way) and 30 or so entered through Cat B rookies or...

    Past Barry O'Connor - delisted 2022

Yeah Barry is a good lad and his father too is a great man. Very much head on his shoulders about him and no airs or graces or thinking he is some sort of superstar. Keeps to himself and plays with great honour. Cork going well in hurling this year, pretty poor in football. At their lowest ebb...

have fox sports here so generally throw on whatever games are on live, usually the evening games over there, so would often see the Friday night games and Saturday/Sunday afternoon onwards. Mightnt get to see the whole game, but generally would see most of it. Also depends who is playing too...

    Past Barry O'Connor - delisted 2022

It probably depends on the definition of success. But Zac Tuohy up until the start of this season held the record for most consecutive games by a current player. Which in itself is a serious achievement. There are currently, by my count, 11 Irish players currently on AFL squads. 8 of that 11...

https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/2019-list-game-plan-and-best-22.1204200/post-61218176 Posted this up yesterday on Barry, he's a good lad, great work ethic and comes from a huge sporting family.

Not sure where to post up, but Sydney have reportedly signed a 20 year old footballer from Wexford in Ireland on a 2 year contract. Barry O Connor was out there in April on a 2 week trial so must have impressed enough to warrant a decent contract. He is from a famous Wexford GAA family, his...

Toast “Mark LeCras wins flag, you know what happened next”

One of my favourite players, as my only avatar ever on here will testify to. I met Le Cras and a good few other players in 2013. Through something I was doing in sports at home, I got to go to an Eagles training session in Subiaco so was on the field for training and in the rooms then for the...

    Welcome Another Irishman: Stefan Okunbor

highlights of Kerrys U20 win over Cork where Okunbar was awarded man of the match. Interview there at the end of the video with some clips of him. As a player, he is a decent full back, but sloppy enough on the ball. He wouldnt have anywhere near the skill or ball playing ability of say O Connor...

News Mark O'Connor apologises for playing secret Gaelic match

Just some perspective on this, O Connor played a club game, so wouldnt even be on the same radar as the level of AFL or reserves or anything. It would be like local league games, hence why players walk onto teams after a year out and back from a wedding the day before. As mentioned, Zac Tuohy...

    Autopsy UP THE ******* COASTERSSS!!!!!!!

A few (a lot, I don't post here often!) random thoughts from an Irish fan a week later. Finally got around to rewatch the game tonight. Watching it from 5am and being all tense is not a great way to analyse! The first quarter wasn't as bad as I initially thought. We should have scored the...

Certified Legendary Thread 2018 Grand Final : West Coast v Collingwood - Wooden Spooners to win Flag

that was some game. Got up at 5am to watch this and wouldn't miss it for a thing. Huge game from Shuey, McGovern and Kennedy. Darling stood up too in the second half when it was needed. Barass and Schofield down back too were solid. Huge win. Some kick from Sheed to win it too. I was worried all...

Retired #45: Conor McKenna ☘️ - Returning to the AFL to play with Brisbane - 17/11

Zach Tuohy has gone home and played with his club a number of times since he was signed up in AFL. And usually much deeper into off season than one week, so it wouldn't surprise me if there isn't anything prohibiting McKenna from playing. It would surprise me if he does play though.

Retired #45: Conor McKenna ☘️ - Returning to the AFL to play with Brisbane - 17/11

Tyrone are massive underdogs, Dublin are 1/7 odds on to win. Tyrone winning would be the biggest shock in over 35 years, so they'd risk anything to try win. Whether McKenna himself sees it worthwhile after a tough season is another thing. I'd be hugely surprised if he is named on their squad. I...

Retired #45: Conor McKenna ☘️ - Returning to the AFL to play with Brisbane - 17/11

Any rumours there of Conor McKenna returning home to play for Tyrone in their final next week? Gathering momentum in Ireland that he could be a surprise inclusion for them when they take on Dublin chasing 4 in a row on Sunday week.

    Preview Round 15, 2018: Melbourne v St.Kilda - MCG, Sunday 1st July, 1:10PM AEST

Gaelic. Was one of the best fielders of the ball on that Good counsel team, had a huge spring in his leap and good hands. An article here gives a decent background on his sporting journey. http://www.the42.ie/kilkenny-hurling-darragh-joyce-3436720-Jun2017/

International Rules - Australia v Ireland

That is to assume that the Irish wouldn't improve. If I was to rate both squads in terms of top players selected/available, I'd rank Australia at about 80 to 90% (Dusty, Mitchell, Pendlebury, Ablett etc) . I'd rank the Irish side at about 50%. No player from Dublin who have won 3 in a row...

International Rules - Australia v Ireland

Definitely a huge difference between both games. In Gaelic you don't have the threat of losing possession by being tackled from behind but hugely different in AFL. I played at small bit there (training more than any games) and it was certainly one of the things challenging to get used to.

No Irish player gets paid in either Gaelic football or IR. they don't have contracts and they don't get page match day fees of any sort.

International Rules - Australia v Ireland

Aiden O Shea has a reputation as a diver in Ireland too. This despite his size and strength that he still acts like a pussy at times. Fyfe is having a very good game.

International Rules - Australia v Ireland

If we did that sure then you'd only be moaning that we are beating you at your own game then! :D yeah I'd say its the big games you see. The final would be a 83,000 sell out. Dublin would sell out the quarter finals and semi finals too, but the other semi finals and finals would be north of 60k...
