I went to Ivanhoe Grammar years 11-12 and played first 18 footy on Friday afternoons , then played with mates on Saturday at Ivanhoe under Steve O'Connell in the U19's.
The school did know , and I don't think they particularly cared back then.
On the other hand , I went to Camberwell GS years...
I played against Albanvale in that 1989 year . They wore nth melbourne guernseys .
Bunch of thugs too didn't mind going the knuckle once they started losing games.
Game got called off during 3rd quarter .
Not surprised they didn't last too long in the ammos
Johnny Stevens dancing on tables to Wham music again ? Good lord.
On a serious note , young Weddle playing well at the Hawks. Was he an old boy like the old man ?
Well this wouldn't be amateur hour any more would it ?
Of course the club would be forced to chase significant sponsorship to cover match day payments moving ahead.
Example- Marbuilt tip in a significant amount of dollars to Bundoora FC and attract a lot of good VFl footballers.
There are a few...
They also have a major sponsor lurking in the background perhaps with some extra funds available to use if the move occurs , something they haven't/ couldn't use with the existing amateur status.
Ivanhoe will find dollars to cover payments albeit for div 3 NFL I doubt they will be that high anyway
Dare I say if the vote coming up for the members is in favour of the shift to the NFL , then Selwood will be back playing with possible appearance of the recently retired brother as well.
Given that the VAFA makes up its own rules as it goes in relation to amateur status , I think this vote...
Have a look at clubs like Banyule and the Eltham turtles who are now thriving in the NFL . Banyule especially have a really strong junior program which will have a flow on effect for years to come. I dare say that a few of these juniors would be playing for IAFC if they were a part of the NFL...
Good to see the club finally win one. Been a hard slog. Hopefully Pete Rawley is still alive and well.
I played down there back in the late 80s with Peter Lee and Travis O’Neill when the club was in B grade and doing well and have kept an eye on results ever since. Not sure if those 2 are still...
I drove past Hoe Park this arvo and it looked liked it was back to its past glory. Big whopping mud pile in the guts and goalsquares were worse. I don't miss playing games at that joint . It was shocking in the 90s when I was a wee fella , and seems nothing has changed
That great news. Had a lot of battles with BTFC in my younger days , such a proud club. I know its a tough grind out there for the non school affillated VAFA sides so to keep it going strong is testament to the committee.
Have heard on the grapevine that numbers are poor at bulleen temp with only 25 or so seniors training so far, and they may pull the pin if numbers dont improve within a few weeks.
Good luck to Rawls and Travis O'neill on the weekend. I played with both. Pete at Ivanhoe and Travis at Macleod Junior Footy Club and both are top blokes and good luck in retirement fellas.
Also, Dave Witchell, is he going to comtinue as coach of Kew, or will he head back to Banyule ? can...
Nup, Couldn't bowl to save myself, but was quick on my feet. Lot has changed since then ! BTW, Pete Rawley is actually 40 ,( my mistake ) so that in itself is a fair effort but he is a glutten for punishment.
Do I know you or should I say, do you think you know me ?
38 years young for memory. Briefly played with him in early 90's and was a gun when the side was cruising in B section.
He was also a tearaway bowler for Rosanna in the HDCA but I think work committments took precedence
