In the long term, is this bottoming out strategy a good thing? Obviously Hawthorn isn't going out there losing delibrately, but the coaching staff would know that playing kids early and trading away older players is going to see them finish lower on the ladder than otherwise they would have...

Eagles have traded fairly with the hawks in the past, I see no reason why the eagles will try and screw Hawthorn by holding out in the vain hope of getting Hay for pick #79 or with pick 12 in the pre-season draft.

He really isn't as bad a player as you all think. Given the right midfield (one that can deliver the ball), he would probably be worth 60 goals a year. He makes fast and smart leads, has the straightest kick in the AFL, and has toned up- he no longer has a gut.
