I'd be surprisd if Haddin would've made it to the two running/full length diving catches Wade took last night. Brilliant takes - and you need only look at the skier that Sangakarra stuffed the other day to realise that just having the gloves on doesn't make anything a dead certainty.
However...
This whole issue is as big a NSW driven mess as when Alan Jones described the then Trevor Hohns led selection panel as the "Taliban of Australian sport" after Mark Waugh was squeezed out.
Right now, B.Haddin, with poor recent ODI form (55 at 9.16 v Bangars and SL) is sitting on the sidelines...
Haddin's 2011 ODI form wasn't flash. v Bangas and then SL, he had 7 hits for 55 (1 no), avg a tick over 9. Top score of 12.
Not flash.
Should he have been rested? or dropped? arguments certainly for both.
Haddin must be realistic and consider himself fortunate if he's still No.1 test...
Those of us who loved what we saw of him v Sth Africa across 2008/2009 remember all too well :
13 for 356 in 3 home tests at 27.38, econ 2.45 and a real coming of age 8-113 in the 3rd test at the SCG.
over in RSA, followed up with
12 for 270 at 22.5 and econ 2.21.
At that point, he had 29 at...
and on Australia Day and all - - would've been a major thrill for Siddle.
I did feel the media went a little soft on the 'Australia Day hero' angle though. (anti Sidds/Vic NSW based media conspiracy???)
I found it a bit odd that the Herald-Sun player rankings had Hilfenhaus at 9/10 and Siddle at 8/10. I'd've thought at best Hilfy would be rated equal with Siddle - but, I'm probably biased. I really felt that Siddle was a prime chance of man of the series.
I filled in the modes of dismissal above......there's not been any 'cheap' dismissals amongst that lot.
Now, nothing against Starc, but, he got a couple which reminded me of Johnson the first time he bowled (at the WACA Starc did bowl better....but, so did Johnson). I've come to realise the...
There were a couple of primary reasons for looking specifically at Johnson away from Perth.
1. Perth was clearly the most (pace) bowler friendly track dished up in last years Ashes series.
2. of the Australia grounds, the WACA is clearly Johnson's preferred (based on stats), 30 wkts at 18.13...
very good point - I managed the 4th day of the Melb test and as much as Pattinson and Hilfenhaus got wickets etc, it was Siddle that really seemed to raise the energy. (was it just me? was it the crowd? I dunno).
But, whatever it was, you felt that something was going to happen. Even in this...
My problem at the time was that there was too much focus on Siddle, and especially for a period there was far, far too little focus on Johnson.
The impact of that one game in Perth was that a lot of people held onto that mental image of Johnson, and didn't look at his figures outside of that...
It's funny that back in South Africa, those of us pushing the Siddle cart were having to defend him against people such as :
Johnson (easy enough to point out that take away his one effort in Perth and around that, his numbers were shocking, mid 50s avg's and going for too many runs an over)...
Ah good, (re the neck/ice), 'cos that's what I thought watching it, but then I went off getting kids into bath and only heard afterward (with Australia batting) that Siddle hadn't bowled after tea due a neck?......and I was thinking he'd just looked knackered.
However, his pace most of this...
Thinking back to the RSA tour and the number of people still lining up to get Siddle out of the side in favour of any number of contenders - - I was pushing the case for his retention, and most certainly ahead of Johnson. Mitch is history now (injury and form).
And Siddle, since the last test...
funny thing on day 4 when I was there was that Siddle really seemed the most threatening of all the bowlers. Pattinson tended to stray too straight and was turned around the corner, but Siddle - none of the batsmen seemed comfortable and just about all the runs off him came through streaky...
was there for day 4 and can say that it was a little bit of a distraction during the tea break but completely forgotten there after. I do wonder why someone might be geared to be put well off-side by it.
Just should mention too, had 2 Milo cricket kids on the 'G at the lunch break, and all up...
I noticed there's still a small chorus of support for Katich.
Reminder.
The 8 opening digs from in India late 2010 into the Ashes -
Katich and Watson, opening stand average was 53. (5 of 8 b/w 58 and 99)
Watson avg 65 and Katich 25.88.
Then, Watson and Hughes, 15 opening digs, avg 36...
He bowled nicely in the morning sessions.....but, on day 2 went missing after that. Leaving his captain to rely on the hard work from the luckless Pattinson and Siddle. Hilfy will be very happy with his 5 but I reckon would feel he owes a bit to his bowling partners.
However - all that said...
Going 150 plus, and the spell he bowled across last night and this morning in which he bowled Dravid (a narrow no ball), Tendulkar and had Laxman caught behind........a pretty damn fine spell of controlled agressive fast bowling. World class stuff. Hilfy undoubtedly benefitted from the work of...
keep mindful that Siddle's career average took a hit when he followed on his initial burst with bowling hurt for a tad too long (an admirable team trait at the time, perhaps?). His figures weren't flash and he got sidelined in the end with the stress fractures in the back back in early 2010...
Nice to see people coming around to Siddle.
Too often there's a focus on what Siddle isn't, rather than what he is.
That Siddle is now emerging from a pretty good 1st change bowler (bowling along side a revolving door spinner system) to now being a pretty well a genuine paceman/new ball...
for the time being, Siddle is still the only true test bowler we have.
He is bowling really well - without luck, but, gee, to rattle the stumps of a set Dravid and Tendulker within a couple of overs of each other.......not bad.
With a bunch of fragile quicks both older and younger around...
Starc is ordinary so far, but,
one thing he did, was get 'left armer' wickets. He bowled poorly (the odd jaffa excepted), and like Mitch, had the luck to pick up some soft dismissals with poor shots to bad balls.
You can see why the selectors like to have that left armer just for the sake of...
Yeah, he's old, but, probably amongst the top couple of players of spin.
Perhaps if the opening positions were in order, then, the rest of the batting could be tinkered with - but, you can only play inexperienced players on 'work experience' in so many top 6 slots. I reckon that alone means...
The biggest issues really around the selections of both Steve Smith and Phil Hughes last year in the Ashes was that BOTH were out of form in domestic cricket. Smith had had a ripper previous season - but, his 2010/11 form was ordinary - and he was thrust into number 6 in a do or die Ashes test...
Quick question, which Australian batsman has scored 4 centuries since the start of the Ashes series. (5 tests there, 3 in SL, 2 in RSA and 2 in NZ).
Infact, with 3 other scores in the 90s, he is just a handful of runs from having scoring 7 centuries in 12 tests in effectively 12 months...
The desire to remove Siddle's best returns to attempt some form of normalisation of his average has to be based on a logical rationale.
The comparison to Mitch Johnson over the last 12 months - you can quite justifiably separate out the Perth game, for reasons such that it was the MOST bowler...
exactly right - I'd think the powers that be would've been quite satisfied (in the main) with Siddle's effort yesterday, and as a bowling unit the results came. Sadly Johnson was niether economical nor penetrating, thankfully Cummins made up for that.
