Of course, that explains the "no holding" instructions the umpires regularly bark to the players.......

Umpires "Coaching" Players on the field

I'm with the OP on this 100%. The umpires are there to pay infringements once the rules are broken, not instruct players on how not to break them. The players are professionals, they should know not to hold, etc without it being necessary for the umpires to tell them in advance. It's...

    Jarred Waite Decision

    Jarred Waite Decision

Re: Jarred Waite's punch to the ball vs Adelaide I didn't see it to be honest. Out of interest, who was the umpire who paid the free kick?

Today's West Australian - "Top Ump twists knife on leo's grand grab"

I agree with that, I still remember the umpires from when I first started following the game as kid. In addition to the above, you have names like Peter Sheales, Ray Sleeth, Don Jolley and John Sutcliffe for instance.

Today's West Australian - "Top Ump twists knife on leo's grand grab"

It is interesting how some view these free kicks as soft at times but as "definitely there" at other times - depending on the circumstances (I am not necessarily levelling that accusation at you by the way). I would have thought free kicks being paid in situations like this are a cause of...
