It's a practice match. We have 2 of them.
They're useful for trying things out.
I dare say the plan all along was to play Day one game, Casboult the other. (and doubtless other players/positions were tested as well).
A new coach will want to see how players go for himself, both because he'll...
In 2 years, he'll be a FA, and have a better idea where the club is going under Hardwick.
If we're playing finals with a sniff of a flag, then he'll probably re-sign. If not, well....He'll move for 'success' (and a big chunk of $$$)
There will be lots of PR spin about how he's learned his lesson and mended his ways, and thus deserves a 'second' chance. That the club will be keeping a close eye on him, and so forth.
In theory, I support these things. People should be given a chance to redeem themselves, and given an...
and it goes both ways.
The players need to adjust, but so does the coach. Maybe moving a player into a different position looked good on paper, but not so much in practice.
The club would be better advised to draft me ahead of him, and I'd be lucky to get a game for the local club's reserve team when they're short of players.
Agreed.
Also, if someone is only telling us the good, it's only half the story.
It also leads to (hopefully) stories of a kid working to overcome his deficiencies, and frankly, I always prefer a kid who has shown he has the ability to work on his game.
I'm a fan of letting players earn numbers.
Give new draftees a low number (50+) and when they become a regular part of the team/club ( say, 50%+ games in previous season, or 3+ years on the list) they get their pick of the 'free' low numbers. Order of choice goes to the player who finished...
They didn't actually finish 9th that often.
They also had some nice high picks. Deledio, Cotchin, Martin, etc. Not as many as GC, but they got some quality from the top end of the draft.
The curious part this year is that a new coach coming in often makes some changes and draft to suit...
Why not?
Just because you're a good VFL player doesn't mean you've got what it takes to play AFL.
Back in the day, my cousin played in the 2s for a (then) VFL team back in the 80s...Came 2nd in the B&F, which might sound good, but it really meant he played every game in the 2s. The really...
I'm not unhappy about Chol. At the start I was thinking early 3rd, and we did a little better than that.
The other 2...We better have cleared some serious cap space to have been bent over that badly.
I'll also add that when I expressed doubts about if we had enough points this year, I was...
Not happy with this one.
A few points this year, and not all that many points next year.
Going by this years ladder, our F4 will only be ~9 picks behind their F3. I hope we do much better next year, but...that's really bugger all return.
The more I think about this trade, the more I think there was a 'wink wink nudge nudge' element where we got an agreement from North not to bid on our academy players.
It just doesn't make sense otherwise.
On the other hand, it Walter gets bid on at 4 instead of 2, that saves us ~500 points...
I think we've played our hand.
If there was any real thought about getting players in, we'd have worked on that before we traded all those picks.
A few players out in return for (hopefully) some pick upgrades or future picks (all relatively minor stuff), and that's it.
Roughly, yeah.
An early 3rd seems fair for a guy who couldn't get a regular game for us last year, and is less likely to next year.
What I'm suggesting is what is likely to be an early 3rd next year, and a few bonus points (~200) for this year.
It'd be a negotiating position.
Probably mostly has to do with how a late pick would be next to useless to us as we already have too many picks, so we'd be looking for a pick upgrade instead.
I'd be targeting Chol, 37 & 61 for 32,53 & F3. We can add some junk picks if needed, and should...
Given his knees, maybe.
But I was thinking more of the structural issues of having (effectively) 4 tall forwards.
There is also a limit to how much of our salary cap we'd want to devote to that section of the ground.
That's great, but who gives Witts a chop out in the ruck?
Where does Read slot in? (that one might be a couple of years away, but still a relevant question)
