Absolutely loved getting my hands on it each week as a kid.
Still get some quality feature articles in there, but a lot of the small tidbits that used to be so interesting have now already been out in some form of media and discussed on bigfooty well and truly before it is read.
You make a good point, the show does not lend itself at all as a suitable medium for footballers or coaches currently in the system. Far better off focusing on guys who've moved on in life and are no longer defined by the sport who can provide a more objective and open view on their experiences...
Can never understand posts like this, with a good interviewer and personable interviewee with that sort of experience there's always a great story or at least something of interest. Same goes in general in everyday life, everyone has got a story worth telling.
As an opinion giver in print, radio or TV shows there are very few things I agree with Lyon with and to be honest think he comes across as a bit of an arrogant toss.
But involved in match commentary he fits like a glove whether it's radio or TV so am pretty happy to hear him calling again as he...
His articles for The Age were excellent and clearly was a breath of fresh air with his articulate and insightful work on air for 360.
People whinge about nepotism, jobs for the boys and incoherent commentary on the game, yet when a player who has a wealth of on field experience, has a good...
Yeah the Wildcats are pretty big over in Perth not uncommon to be on the back pages. But have noticed when over in the eastern states the NBL rarely seems to get much attention. FSN give it a bit of coverage in their news bulletins, but that's not surprising given their position as rights...
What an odd thing to say. As far as I am aware the AFLW is played in every state and territory (don't know but assume they've got a game down in Tas this year?).
Is the perfect acquisition for SEN.
You bring big numbers listening in not only for his quality broadcasting and interviewing skills which are pretty much unsurpassed in the Australian sport media landscape, but you also get hordes of mouthbreathers tuning to the station hanging onto every word...
Well I'm indifferent to him leaving Offsiders and I think cricket wise they should have a couple of decent candidates for replacing him. But as I said in the post you quoted, his talent as a caller on radio is absolutely second to none hence as a frequent listener to the Grandstand footy...
It's quite amusing to see how obsessed some are with him dedicating volumes of invective filled paragraphs despite claiming their indifference.
As with most talking heads or hosts, can take or leave them but his loss to the ABC will unquestionably be felt in the play-by-play commentary of the...
Geez a few with an axe to grind in here.
I've also liked the addition of Rogers and Nannes to the ABC commentary team. I do tend to agree with the criticism that Rogers, Katich & Nannes all have similar styles and opinions which does make it a bit uniform throughout the day, but on an...
Don't know if Mitchell will ever be in a position to come back to being the lead full time.
Could live with both Wheeldon or Middlemass, both very knowledgeable and have the sort of voice for it.
This is a very good point by Kimber:
Yeah it's a pretty game call by him to take it on. To be the sole and only public front for the most unpopular, controversial and emotional aspect of the game every single week would have to take it's toll I reckon.
Good on him for putting his proverbial onto the chopping block believing he can...
I guess he would have signed with one upon being drafted and has viewed it as a necessity ever since. Not that I have any idea of what goes on behind closed doors, but who knows how much having that professional relationship helped him get the gig at GWS and how his off field life has benefited...
Have made similar posts before but can't believe the bitching and moaning over a non-star appearing on the show. All people, let alone professional footballers would have interesting insights, all that it really takes to deliver a quality and insightful interview is the personality of the...
I wouldn't know, but would wager that Mitchell's appearance on the show is more driven by his own management in the aim of building his media profile as he transitions into coaching. Both the Eagles and 360 are hardly going to say no given the considerable public interest in his surprise move...
I get the formula in what they are aiming for in embedding guys who build up that rapport with the audience over the course of the year, Murphy and Lewis are probably cases of success stories with this, but other regular guests just haven't quite hit the mark.
Have you tried 91.3? It's pretty budget, but the knowledge of these younger guys coming through beats the hell out of 6PR. It's where guys like Middlemass, Cameron & McGrath started out before being poached.
* Disclaimer - have not listened to them a lot in past year due to being away.
Commetti's been around long enough and had a pretty documented life so it's pretty surprising these kind of myths keep coming up. He was a Melbourne supporter due to Bob Johnson which he has put in his own words before.
Agree in that a lot of the self-righteous headlines I see on there make me cringe. But I don't bother clicking on them, just go straight to the footy and cricket section because there are consistently excellent feature articles on there that well and truly exceed the tabloid style drilled into...
