Which 1990s players would be even better in the current game? And which would be worse?

What are you even on about? I didn't actually compare Carey to Dusty. In response to a comment that said Carey would be used as a mid in today's game, I said he might be used like Dusty, starting in centre bounces and going forward. You then had a little melt that I was saying he was better. I...

Each Club's Best Teams Since 1980

I’d probably go Brown to CHF and add Loewe to the bench rather than Tredders because I don’t have a second ruck. yeah competition for mid spots is pretty tight - hard to argue too strongly for any one over another out of the players you listed and my bench and emergency guys. I picked Grimes...

Each Club's Best Teams Since 1980

Will accept your 1st and 2nd XXIIs but reckon we need a 3rd I'll put one up but admit it will be pretty lacking in players from the 80s B. C Johnson Rance Grimes HB McKenna Grant Bartel C Bontompelli Fyfe Kouta HF Cousins Pavlich Richardson F S Johnson Lloyd Akermanis Foll Gawn Dangerfield...

Who have been the most damaging mids since 2000 (disposals, goals + goal-assists)?

There is a stat, I can't remember exactly what it's called, that AFL clubs keep, where they look at chains of possession that culminate in a scoring shot. So when a player gets a clearance they keep a stat of whether it ends up in a score 3 or 4 or 5 possessions later, or whether it ends up in a...

Who have been the most damaging mids since 2000 (disposals, goals + goal-assists)?

Some of the best players of all time were dominant mids who also hit the scoreboard. For fun, I had a look at the stats of some great players, and added their goals and goal-assists (recorded since 2003), and also looked at their disposals. As a rough measure of a highly damaging mid, I looked...

Which 1990s players would be even better in the current game? And which would be worse?

I saw Gaz Snr play - know what he could do. My point was that, in the modern game, kicking goals and creating a bit of space are about the hardest things you can do. Many consider Dusty the league’s MVP because of his abilities in those regards. Very very few players these days can break a...

Which 1990s players would be even better in the current game? And which would be worse?

Yeah Diesel would still be a gun - unlike like a Lockett or Madden who might struggle to get picked. But would he be what he was - the best player in the league for much of his career?

Which 1990s players would be even better in the current game? And which would be worse?

Yeah good call on Cunnington. Diesel's elite hands, vision and ball-winning would make him still a gun. I remember Jonathon Brown going into the midfield a few times and dominating. Carey had the skills on both sides of the body and at ground level to be even better in the middle. He'd...

Which 1990s players would be even better in the current game? And which would be worse?

Ablett Snr - went alright in the 1990s but would be even more damaging now - would start in centre for clearances then move to full forward like Dusty on steroids Hird - see above, plus his elite aerobic capacity would make him even better in today's game at pushing forward on the rebound...

Black Magic: The best Aboriginal 18 of all time:

Needs more Marleon Pickett. Hadyn Bunton and Fyfe are only players to avg ≥ 1 Brownlow vote/game but Pickett only player to avg ≥ 1 premiership/game

    Opinion Robbo's top 50 for 2019

Agreed largely, although Zorko is pretty good - where would you have him? Ablett not in the top 50, definitely not if you're including finals. Where's Toby Greene? Slot him in for Ablett at 32. Love Prestia but would have him around 20. Brown way too low. Hawkins too high as well.
