Nah. WA and SA should wait. Would harm existing rivalries and clubs.
Canberra is the obvious 20th team.
Should've happened 10-20 years ago.
If the league was serious about making the league less Victorian dominated, and Australia wide, North Melbourne and St Kilda would be relocated.
Capitalising on the Queensland upswell in participation and interest should be in the AFLs thinking.
Canberra is the logical place for the 20th team - strengthen the Victoria to Sydney corridor whilst ensuring GWS focus on Western Sydney.
Then a North relocation to Sunshine Coast would be a...
I agree it would be better if they were new. I'm not keen to expand past 20 teams though, club fans should have a realistic chance at more than 1 or 2 flags in their lifetime. I think there would be a risk some fans lose interest as a result.
Removing saints and north who aren't economically...
Canberra makes sense to me. Strengthen the ties between Victoria and Sydney. Force GWS to focus on community uplift in western Sydney and growing their fan base there (which was supposed to be the point).
Then relocate North and Saints to the next markets who should have their own team -...
That's my view as well. I don't think we should be going further than 20 given the chances of team success get decreased with every addition, and the league needs to be careful with quality.
The emerging NSW and Qld markets should be adding more AFL standard players, but I would want to see...
I think 20 teams is enough.
19 - Tasmania
20 - Canberra
21 - North relocate to Sunshine Coast and play as North Kangaroos (maintain Melbourne market as secondary).
22 - St Kilda relocate to NT and change white to red (maintain Melbourne market as secondary).
23 - Demons relocate to Perth and...
The standard of football needs to be maintained. The regions of Tasmania, Canberra/Albury, Newcastle, Sunshine Coast need to have grass roots football in place to have footballers home grown playing for those teams, and to ensure the pool of players can sustain the increase in teams.
Tasmania...
If there was 20 teams you could legitimately look at restructuring the season.
20 round season where everyone plays each other once, with one extra cross town rival game.
Then a top 10 finals series (extra week needed).
So essentially only really lose one week of football.
Could make that...
Tassie Devils. Maroon, yellow and green.
Canberra Wolves. Blue, black and white.
Perth Dingoes. Red, green and white.
Newcastle Sharks. Green and Blue.
Maybe relocate a Melbourne team to Sydney.
Obviously GWS have western.
Make Sydney Swans south of the harbour (Souths) could also be renamed to South Sydney.
Then relocated Melbourne team renamed North Sydney playing out of North Sydney oval or SCG. Two games a week in Sydney would help with...
There does appear to have been very little consultation with non Victorian football representatives in making this deal.
Screams a VFL decision rather than an AFL decision which is the problem.
Haven’t read whole thread. Is the plan to demolish the GSS and replace to match other side to increase capacity? Would be awesome.
A few more 1000 seats for supporters of each club in the GF should be priority 1.
