It was created as a substitute for having the GF permanently in Sydney, which got them offside with pretty much everyone outside of Sydney (especially Melbourne and to a lesser extent Wellington).
The NRL indeed copied it from Super League, who used that weekend to provide an extra rivalry game at a venue usually outside of the strongold of RL (North-East England), with all matches in the one venue such as Anfield, Murrayfield, St.James' Park or Milennium Stadium to name 4. Unlike the AFL...
Even sports fans can appreciate the time off in February to prepare for a season of footy, and the desperate can usually satisfy themselves with the American Sports. I guess some may also now appreciate when AFLW started in late January as it filled the gap knowing when they now end their season...
I'm intrigued to know how state league teams, especially those without substantial licensed club revenues which Southport has or without major compensation from the AFL clubs if they call up said players (the SANFL and WAFL clubs in particular would demand this), would find $2 Million annually...
Regular season game I believe was 7863 for a 2014 game at Manuka Oval between GWS and the Bulldogs. Remember giving it to Jeremy Cameron because he got a waterboy to tie his shoelaces. The next day I ran a 4:19 marathon after suffering a nasty cramp in the hamstrings with 10km to go...
Government up here also gets accused on spending in the wrong areas if any mention of building a new stadium is on the agenda (Fix the health system, what about the mines and jobs etc). Think it will be another 5 years before anything is done for the Lions with the Commonwealth Games taking up...
Which would be a problem for us (and in the past Richmond) given we sell the game to Cairns. Ditto for Melbourne against Port and whoever they play in Darwin.
And when it does get taken up, the seats are often on sale for inflated values. Not sure how much ticketmaster takes out from that deal, but surely that won't be enough to justify the increase in costs. For example in 2 weeks time when the Eagles play the Suns, seats are available through resale...
Not when Eddie or Brayshaw cracks it when they see this as something worse than the so called "hand outs". Hence the ridiculously flawed bidding system.
And don't get me started on Auskick. Yes you can have great Auskick numbers but what the governing body needs to look at is YOUTH...
Twilight games work pretty well for Gold Coast, plenty of time to have a lie in in the morning (or a beach run if you're that inclined), a lazy lunch, game at about 4:30 then off to the clubs or the Casino (or even back into Brisbane just after 9). Brisbane would be the same although they'd...
I guess we know when the Bye round will be then....
And on the stadium debate, if it wasn't for the failed Olympic bid for the 1996 games (and the Commonwealth Games held in 2006) the GF and the big games would be at Waverley.
I don't think you'll see big Melbourne clubs selling games interstate for the sake of it. Overseas though into the Asian market though could be a different story. Most games these days are basically funded by Governments paying money through tourism budgets which most states now probably can't...
It's probably also why Toyota chose to retain sponsorship of the competition rather than spending millions on a V8 Supercar program that Nissan/Volvo/Mercedes AMG have.
As for the historical link between cars and clubs, here's an off the top of my head list of car manufacturers linked to clubs...
Just spare a thought for the Brisbane folk who on Sunday had to endure a 12:10 start. Can't remember a game ever starting that early since the morning game in Canberra in 1998.
The NRL realised this this year that they needed a tournament to get the people talking about their code's on field...
For every home game in Melbourne, I know I have to spend about $400-$600 in flights and accommodation (country member so get into 5 games). It also doesn't help when most of our games are on a twilight Sunday, meaning that I'm having to book expensive early Monday flights just to get back to...
How could they police that effectively? Define Football Department as opposed to Medical Services and Sports Science which could easily fall under Football Department.
I think what may happen is not so much a reserves competition, but a development type underage competition for 19-23 year olds given many clubs recruit most new players in that age bracket. Much like the NRL Under 20's, the players can be drawn from senior lists and excess players have to either...
Probably belongs here, but it seems the so called #1 brand amongst football clubs is trying to muscle in on the part time turf of a couple of the AFL's brands.

If Penrith's Brand Value was that high, they would have 11 Friday Night games in the first 20 rounds of hte NRL season instead of the Broncos.
Just thinking aloud, would the fact that Penrith field teams from Under 16's through to senior grade (as opposed to Collingwood who field just 2...
They seem to be VERY serious about getting their own team but are open to a relocation, have a Leagues Club and junior development programs set up already. Personally it's stupid talk but....
