    Research Recent Deaths

After he left Geelong in the 60s, he became involved in Tasmanian football and had an enormous impact on the game there. He was inducted into the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame in the "legend" category in 2014. https://afltashalloffame.com.au/legends/94-john-devine/

Discussion The VFA premierships debate - should they be recognised as elite level premierships?

The club recognizes flags won across all leagues it has competed in. Each individual league however recognizes premierships won in that league only. So, in the case of Geelong, the club would recognize 16 flags - 7 VFA, 9 VFL/AFL. However the AFL would only recognize the flags won in its...

    Research Recent Deaths

Former Collingwood player and Tasmanian HOF member Lerrel Sharp has left us. I missed his time as a player, but I remember him distinctly being an expert commentator in the media when I grew up. (Pinched this from FB, not my work, that credit goes to Craig Davis). Lerrel Sharp Collingwood...

He played f-c cricket for Tassie during their early Shield days, in the late 70s. I remember watching him play a Shield match for Tassie at Devonport.

List Bizarre/unusual reasons for cancelled/suspended/abandoned games

Macquarie Uni and Penno both have two senior sized grounds. I don't think ECE has. I'll have to think about other clubs. Penrith's second ground is junior size only (around 110m long - I have no idea why it wasn't made larger, eg 140m long).

List Bizarre/unusual reasons for cancelled/suspended/abandoned games

Here's more info about the game, anyway. It was actually in 2007, more recent than I realized. At Bensons Lane 1st July, 2007 Mac Uni 4.4 9.6 17.10 22.13 (145) Penrith 1.1 3.3 3.3 4.3 (27) The match had originally been scheduled as a home game for Macquarie Uni the previous day, but was...

I'm getting forgetful, lol..... I hope the details didn't change over the three years. ;)

List Bizarre/unusual reasons for cancelled/suspended/abandoned games

Not quite the topic of this thread - but I know of a game which could have been abandoned, but wasn't due to an inventive solution being found. It happened in Sydney footy nearly 20 years ago. Approaching half-time in the match a player was seriously injured to the extent that (from memory) it...

List Bizarre/unusual reasons for cancelled/suspended/abandoned games

Whilst it's not a cancelled game, I've seen something in Sydney footy which I have never heard of. Ever. My club was playing a game, when just before half-time an opposition player was seriously injured. So much so that a helicopter was called in (obviously the player could not be moved). This...

List Highest score in a match - Any league/Division

I remember that game occurring in Sydney football. Blacktown kicked 313 points in 18 games that season and conceded 4233 points. Their reserve grade started the season but didn't see it out. The next season Blacktown supposedly "merged" with Parramatta, but it was for all intents and purposes...

Plus they just turn people away from the game. They achieve nothing apart from creating records.

List Highest score in a match - Any league/Division

There certainly is now, the laws of the game state a minimum of 14, but a controlling body has the right to vary. Certainly here in Sydney senior footy, the minimum to either start or continue a game is 14. In addition to that, in some of the grades here in Sydney (lower senior grades & under...

Resource Australian Football History Resource Thread

Kevin Taylor's site is worth a look. Unfortunately it is on freeservers (which can make the info a bit all over the place and hard to find), but there are some gems on there - eg, an extensive research article on the early days of the game in Sydney...
