    Society/Culture Japan population crisis

Sounds like they're going to start putting out baby bonuses, free childcare etc. Also sounds like they've started up an immigration program from China. Not sure if that's enough by itself.

Politics Should Australia become a Republic?

Australia becoming a republic is an inevitably. As the nation develops the Commonwealth becomes less and less relevant. It is a matter of when, not if. Probably a few generations to go before it happens.

Science/Environment Nuclear power: The ultimate climate solution

The most realistic way we get to net zero emissions by 2050 is with maybe 3-4 baseload nuclear power plants. Then we will be completely done with coal forever.

    Politics Ryanair Flight & Belarus

The ATC call is out there. The controller tells the Ryanair flight that theres a bomb on board reported "that can be activated over Vilnius". Super dodgy and then they ask the pilot what he wants to do - he obviously diverts to Belarus because hes been told the bomb can be activated above...

    Politics Ryanair Flight & Belarus

In the Bolivian version they were free to land their plane where they liked and weren't forced by a fighter jet to land somewhere they did not choose to. So not exactly the same by a long shot.

Science/Environment Coronavirus - Should masks be mandatory?

My wife has a friend in contact tracing at DHHS. She's never seen an outdoor transmission case in any of the cases she's investigated. The sensible thing for me would be to make wearing of face masks mandatory for indoor settings like the workplace and public transport. The most...

    The Law Police

The 200m isn't the same in Victoria I believe. There's one place where speed cameras like to sit in my local area literally 50m past a 70km/h speed limit sign (previous zone 60km/h).

Not good enough that Vicroads has advice that contradicts the written law. That sounds like a legal nightmare.

Ah ok, fair enough. Still, VicRoads is the authority on road rules, the fact that they say it is enough.

    The Law Police

There's a clear implication in the law that slowing to 40km/h may not be possible in some circumstances. Reducing speed, even if the vehicle does not get down to 40km/h, will still have safety benefits for law enforcement or emergency workers and will help drivers take evasive action if...

    The Law Police

I don't see how a fine can stand on a freeway if you slow down in a gradual manner upon seeing emergency lights. The actual law itself implies attaining a speed of 40km/h isn't realistic in some instances on a high speed road and even acknowledges that sudden deceleration should be avoided...

    The Law Police

Just reading the 40km/h law I see it has been changed on high speed roads that you must slow down gradually and avoid sudden braking. So common sense in terms of that it isn't absolutely essential you slow to 40 on a freeway when you see emergency vehicle lights but you must slow down gradually.

    The Law Police

This makes sense, sitting around waiting for a tow truck on the freeway seemed an unnecessary risk. Should have either directed the driver to pull over to an off ramp or once he was pulled over get an officer to move the vehicle into a safe position. I would expect procedure has been revised...

    The Law Police

Why would there be a trial for the reckless conduct charges? The outraging public decency charge - that seems very subjective and looks like something his lawyer will drive a nail through. I can't seem to find it in vic law anywhere. A trial for a couple fo reckless driving offences...

    Science/Environment Beirut Explosion

Well well well https://www.metabunk.org/threads/2020-beirut-explosions.11345/ Look at the photos of how the ammonium nitrate was stored. It was seized from a freighter ship that was not allowed to leave Beirut 6 years and stored in bags ever since. In other words, it was a ticking time...

    Science/Environment Beirut Explosion

Reported that a worker was welding a door shut at the fireworks factory which started a fire. That progressed to the ammonium nitrate storage (2770 tons!!) and ignited it. Couple of things, no way should that much ammonium nitrate be in storage near a residential area - or next to a fireworks...

Science/Environment Nuclear power: The ultimate climate solution

Brown coal industry doesnt have much clout. Victoria could lead the way by replacing brown coal with nuclear. Hazelwood is gone. Yalloun gone latest 2030. A nuclear industry would totally revitalise the Latrobe Valley.

Science/Environment Nuclear power: The ultimate climate solution

The stats on how many deaths coal has caused through health problems is frightening. Fukushima doesnt deter me at all. Despite the worse possible conditions possible thanks to a 1 in 10000 year earthquake very few died from the nuclear accident. A relatively small area was contaminated. In...

Science/Environment Nuclear power: The ultimate climate solution

Australia is perfectly set up for nuclear energy. Abundance of Uranium. Abundance of arid land to store processed waste. Geologically stable. If we are serious about zero carbon we need to commit to nuclear power right away. It takes 10 years to set up nuclear power, you can't just knock...

They're just republishing news from Donbass news sources. You're mistaking the concerns of East Ukraine with the concerns of Russia. If you did your due diligence you'll discover that the majority of donbass inhabintants have been internally displaced within Ukraine. What's left are a...

History 5/2/15 New allegations of Saudi involvement in 9/11

No that isn't the only evidence. Countless examples of video footage. Radar records from ATC. If what you say is true there would be thousands of witnesses speaking up saying I didn't see a plane because the streets of NYC are pretty busy at 8.30 in the morning. You have absolutely no...
