Prediction Harry Sheezel - Can he be the GOAT?

Can't have that. Surely Zeno Tzatzaris is still the man. Lack of football ability well compensated by 3 zeds.

    Essendon vow enough is enough

Next week the story will be about how Jake Stringer has learnt to love running, has had the preseason of his life and is ready to tear the competition apart. Then a few second half fade outs, 2nd quarter huffing and puffing and a soft tissue injury in one of the early rounds.

Essendon 2000 has to be the greatest Team of all Time?

The Essendon 2000 team backed up largely unchanged in 2001 and ran into a superior Lions team who beat them easy on their way to 3 flags, 4 GFs in a row. I'd take those Brissy teams over 2000 Essendon as a stronger outfit. Those teams were hard, skillful and pretty bombproof; Key backs -...

Lack of left footed Brownlow Medalists

Sam Mitchell was equally good on either foot but reckoned he got more distance on his left. Long term the 20% average will be roughly right. Bob Skilton and Ian Stewart were both lefties who won 6 Brownlows between them in the 60s.

Opinion Your top 5 overated players

Jacob Hopper - generally regarded as a coup when Richmond paid a first and 2nd rounder for him and gave him a 7 year contract. That's overrated. Very vanilla ball butcher who gets by on an association with the superior Taranto. Christian Salem - top 10 draft pick who couldn't cut it in...

Who is the best player in AFL history for a clone team?

I'd take Ablett Snr. Was an unbeatable winger before his exploits deep forward. Wins nearly every one on one.

Who is the best Key Forward of the 21st Century?

If I was picking 2 key forwards for a best 22, from that list I'd take Franklin and Riewoldt.

    2024 Ladder Predictions

I'm obviously biased, but Dogs winning 16 games isn't that big a leap. Last year we went 12-11, including wins against 3 of the 4 PF teams. Admittedly, we had some shockers late in the year. Reasons we can improve by a few games this year: - Whole new assistant coaching panel. Our 2022/23...

    Best Brothers

Two others that deserve to be at the very pointy end of any list; Andrew and Darren Jarman - both excellent natural footballers with multiple All Australians and a pile of achievements Ian and Bruce Nankervis - both played 250 games plus. Absolute Geelong stalwarts for well over a decade

Opinion Which club is Mark Jackson most associated with?

Jackson is a true oddity. He once did a talking tour throughout Australia with two of the most horrendous people of recent history; Mark Chopper Read and Roger Rogerson I happened to see them at a Pub in Yandina on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. They played many similar weirdarse joints...

Opinion Which club is Mark Jackson most associated with?

As a player of the 80s I'm guessing Chasers on a Thursday, The Tunnel on a Saturday, with a smattering of the Metro, Chevron, Redheads and Saloon Bar.

Essendon can't live without pokies funding says David Barham

Yep, 12 years or so ago EFC promised us spreadsheets that show how well governed their supplements program was and yet still crickets. Sorry, but it's going to be referred to for years to come, it's just the gift that keeps on giving (unless someone finds them of course).

    Players with flattering best stats

Bulldogs John Georgiades (father of Port player Mitch) had a 22 possession debut and kicked 8.4. One of the best debuts you'd ever see. Career lasted 15 games.

Essendon can't live without pokies funding says David Barham

Lots of guys selling drugs to teenagers mount a similar defence. If I don't sell it to them, they'll just go elsewhere.

Essendon can't live without pokies funding says David Barham

My biggest take out from those figures is that EFC spent over $1.5mill on IT expenses last year, but still nobody can retrieve that pesky spreadsheet.

Opinion What unpopular AFL opinions do you have? - Part 2

In my unpopular opinion, the game would be better with 14 players for each team on the ground. The athletic capacities of the modern player and heavy interchange rotations have made a 36 man game just too many. Get rid of the flankers, all they do is congest. If the game started with the...

Players you are surprised are still on an AFL list

There is a certain symmetry to you guys awarding medals to minimally talented very talls whilst setting fire to very smalls.

Prediction Which player from your team improves the most in 2024?

For the Dogs, James O'Donnell came from nowhere last season as a CatB rookie after minimal footy in recent years and a late VFL preseason. Did remarkably well considering. With a full preseason and (hopefully) a new defensive system to work within, he can cement himself as a quality tall defender.

Where are the Western Bulldogs at?

Our coaching division has been a shambles since 2021, by all reports being addressed over the offseason. No doubt we've got issues, but still won more games than lost in each of the past 5 seasons. Players yet to peak include Naughton, English, Jamarra, Smith, Weightman, Richards, Darcy, West...

Opinion Best current kick of the football

As a biased Dogs fan, Caleb Daniel has to be included in the most creative. His kick from the back pocket in the dying seconds of the semi final vs Brisbane in 2021 is the ballsiest kick I've seen.

Best individual finals performance in AFL/VFL history

Most underrated was a 21yo Dermott Brereton being sent to full forward in the 1985 GF and kicking 8 goals despite his team getting flogged.
