Now, now. Many a forward has been embarrassed along the way by.... *consults team list* "Jake Fitzgerald". I don't actually know who that is, but I presume he must be a consummate player with a long history of playing defence in the AFL.
They are both very good players, but let's keep it in perspective. We are talking about Melbourne and the Bulldogs here: no matter how good they get, it's all fated to end in tears. Tom Boyd will retire at the age of 22 to pursue a modelling career, Jesse Hogan will break in half stepping out of...
The problem isn't that the players are moving to the AFL, it's that they're being poached right at the end of the pre-season, with little chance for their clubs to replace them. I don't understand why this wasn't organised much earlier, given that we have known for months that the tribunal...
Without a doubt, the winner was [My Team]. [Player X] was a steal at [middling draft pick], given he was tipped to go at [marginally higher draft pick]. Nearly creamed myself when his name was read out! As for the rest, [Player Y] is a little bit raw but as a big bloke will come good with time...
For most clubs, you might be right. I'm not qualified to debate Trengove's worth on the open market. In Fremantle's case, for example, I don't think it'd be in your interests to trade 12 for a player like Trengove given you already have many mids of a much higher quality. But having said that...
He's a number 2 draft pick (and former captain!) with 5 years in the system and his best football ahead of him. It's only daylight robbery in the event that his foot is truly stuffed, and if that's the case then I'm not sure why Richmond would be so happy to make this trade.
It may well be...
Either his foot is much worse than we think, or there's another player we're trying to trade in using pick 12. Otherwise it's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.
Wouldn't do it for pick 12 alone, let alone sending over pick 23 along with it.
If anything I think the introduction of FA has only served to make draft picks even less valuable. Previously, if you were lucky enough to draft a gun player then you could be reasonably confident of keeping him for his entire career. Now, there's a danger that you can put 8 years into a player...
Well Judd might be a good example - West Coast effectively only got picks 3 and 20 for him, and he was the best player in the league at the time. Martin isn't in the top 40 players in the league at the moment (based on his exclusion from the AA nominations), his own club don't think he's worth...
Yeah, I was a bit surprised when I heard as well - showed more than spencer or paul johnson in the games he was able to play before the injury. Hoping we get to keep him for another year, but other teams in need of a ruckman should definitely be looking at him.
Thank you jordon mcmahon!
One of the issues may be Carlton's apparent interest in Daniel Bell and Simon Buckley. They might be trying to structure a deal to include one of those two as well.
If Jeff White goes, I'll kill myself, sell my soul to the devil for another 24 hours on Earth and then kill myself again. If we trade him in a straight swap for Whitnall, then I'll still kill myself, but not before taking the rest of you down with me...
Like I said, the rankings I've given the players aren't scientific and are open to debate. Hopefully though, even though I may have overrated a few and underrated a few others, it should give you a pretty good idea about what you're likely to get for a first round pick.
If anyone wants to...
Looking back on the drafts from 1999-2001, I've the rated players drafted as being either Stars / Great Players, Useful / Good Players and Mediocre Players / Duds. I've only included these three years because any draft before around 1999 didn't really have the same sort of science behind it that...
