Makes sense given his penchant for kids from WA.
Bootsma
Cripps
Boekhorst
All players he reached for in their respective drafts (with many people slamming Carlton for taking a mid in Cripps when Cam McCarthy was still on the board).
Consider that he was the one on the right side of the Jaksch, Whiley and 19 for pick 7 deal.
What's of bigger concern for mine is that GWS has had a pretty good run with trade deals, but didnt spend their draft picks incredibly well. That comes down to recruiter Paul Brodie (who I believe has...
And they were shopping McKenna for chips in the off-season just past from all reports.
Humorously to me, whilst Carlton clearly screwed up giving pick 7 for Jaksch, we ended up with picks 4 and 6 in the draft this off-season without giving too much away.
Malthouse is probably the best and worst thing to happen to the club in 15 years. Rivals the Pagan era of madness, but really put us in our place. The club has finally acknowledged where it is at and seems to be doing what it can to genuinely rebuild.
This year our on field performances will go...
My concerns in January were obviously pointed in the right direction, but after the season had transpired, I was much less concerned to lose him. His efforts this season were shameful, and he really needs an attitude change if he's going to be any sort of success.
The thing with Richmond is...
Boekhorst's second game (starting sub) with 35% gametime in a game where our midfield was comprehensively smashed by Collingwood resulted in 2 kicks and 4 handballs (6 touches).
Laverde's first game game in a close win against Melbourne with 77% gametime resulted in 2 kicks and 4 handballs (6...
I'm using it to show that we did similar turning our first rounder into Jaksch, Whiley and Boekhorst.
We needed outside pace, and we got it.
You're bring critical of bringing in 21 year old players with first round draft picks. You did it twice in the same year.
But 3 game player Blaine Boekhorst definately wont make it?
Dont get me wrong, I've seen a fair few of your games and you have some players i'm a fan of. I think St Kilda are rebuilding quite well - but they should be given how long theyve been doing it.
I still think your boy is way off in...
Without being a dickhead, how old was Tom Lee when you gave up pick 12 for him?
Without being a dickhead, how old was Tom Hickey when you gave up pick 13 (and others) for him?
And surely Billy Longer Must have been 18 when you gave up pick 25 for him (only 4 picks later than the pick you...
Talk about overrating your own. You include Goddard who hasnt even had a debut, but exclude a bunch of Carlton youth who you probably havent seen play. The voice of reason.
I dont know where he will pick. Carlton dont seem like a great destination right now. I would think his father would...
You do realise that most clubs these days have Father/Son development programs? They invest heavily in the development of these prospects, and its not mere chance. These kids are sons of 100+ game players - not just anyone to ever pull on the jumper.
One has a historical connection that is important to generations of the game. The other is a fabrication by the AFL to help prop up its "projects" in struggling AFL territories.
Now that the AFL has seen how to run these successfully, they should be able to take the reins and run them according. They basically fully pay for GWS and GC anyway, so its basically the same thing. They have the right structures in place....fund them and allow the talent to be available to all...
Shouldnt the AFL just pay for the academies? Then the players get drafted via the normal draft process? If it increases the talent pool accross the AFL, then it makes sense that all clubs can draft these players, and the AFL benefits as a whole.
I understand GWS and GC having some additional...
I said that if the player doesnt choose FS, then they go through the normal process (the draft) - e.g. if they are eligible for both, the FS should take precedence.
But if they dont get nominated by a club for FS, then they can go via the academy program.
I'm aware of the circumstances of how it played out.....and I guess you are right in that we didnt nominate him, and therefore he just entered the draft (rather than declining a nomination) which was the circumstance I had framed.
In my opinion, F/S should always get preference. It's been a rule for over 50 years, and whilst it has been altered to manage for the draft and other circumstances....its one of the great aspects of our game.
The order should be:
- F/S club gets first dip at bidding. If they dont want to use...
