The village of Verdant Hollow did NOT sleep well.

Throughout the night, lights flicked on in windows that usually stayed dark. Doors opened and closed quietly, and figures moved quickly between shadows in the cobbled-stone alleys and across the surrounding fields. But no one dared to speak openly about what they had seen or heard, as the once-trusting community was well and truly divided. And nobody was quite sure who was safe to talk to.

The carrot still stood in the square, casting a long shadow in the early morning sun. It appeared that someone had tried to cover the whole thing in aluminium foil during the hours of darkness. To what end, no one really could say. If it was meant to block its influence, it had failed, as the giant vegetable only seemed to glow brighter. The Gralinistinians insisted it had grown another inch overnight, while The Millquetoasts responded with an agricultural term that probably wouldn't pass the BigFooty swear filter.

But one thing that was beyond debate. The tensions in this quiet far-flung town in the Land of Sweet had escalated dramatically ... with fatal consequences.

DEADLINE

It didn’t take long after the morbid news rippled through Verdant Hollow in the early hours for the townsfolk to start sizing each other up. The regular Monday midday market had become a pressure cooker of side-eyes, finger-pointing, and conspiracy theories that usually didn’t make it out into the open like this.

Whispers turned to accusations, then accusations turned to shouting. And shouting, as it always does in Sweet, turned into an absolute free-for-all, with Chief quietly readying the moderators while counting the sweet dollars every extra page of arguments would earn him.

One villager swore they knew who was behind the chaos — apparently their uncle’s neighbour’s cousin saw someone moving suspiciously near the shrine. Another claimed the Gralinistinians were planning to use The Carrot to reanimate Proper Gander. A third, with considerably fruitier language, called that idea “plain stupid.” Someone else decided that THAT comment required a fist.

And suddenly, things got really violent.

After the fracas slowly dissipated, it became clear this was no longer about facts or logic. It was about momentum. And once the mood had turned, nothing could stop it. A truce was reluctantly brokered and a decision was made as the sun dipped behind the surrounding hills. A hastily erected gallows now cast a long shadow through the town square, and there was a strange stillness in the air.

Justice, of some kind, had been served.

Had the good people of Verdant Hollow silenced a threat? Or had they handed the carrot exactly what it wanted? If a carrot can even have wants …

DEADLINE (cont ...)

The sun rose slowly over Verdant Hollow, but it didn't bring the warmth it normally did at this time of year. Instead, it brought the cold, harsh light of day that revealed some unpleasant surprises for the long term residents of the formerly sleepy village. The square was quieter than usual and the market stalls, still left strewn from yesterday’s chaos, only amplified the feeling of unease.

There had been screams and shouts throughout the night, mostly from the direction of the Graliniatinian shrine, but it was deathly quiet there now. The only movement there now was the flag atop the domed roof flapping listlessly in the early morning breeze.

Word spread fast. Four more Hollowfolk were gone, including and two regular townsfolk caught in the crossfire. There was no pattern, no logic. Just the unmistakable sense that the Millquetoasts were slowly but surely stamping their authority on the village. But that didn't really feel any more comforting.

And of course, in the middle of the square, the Carrot still silently stood tall.

One youngster was overheard asking their mother if they should start praying to the giant vegetable just in case. The mother didn’t answer and worriedly looked around to make sure no one else had heard. But the others were too busy inspecting the bodies laid strewn on the ground ...
It is now Day 2.
