SEASON: Not one to remember for big Mick. Was restricted to a handful of games and his effect on those unfortunately were minimal.
FUTURE: The big question! An interesting thought is that Mick is one of two players on the veterans list, Stevo the other. With Duck now 30, we can cut $400,000 off our salary cap by placing Wayne on the list.
This could be a determining factor in Mick's future. The Roos could delist him and pick him up in November, but that might be a little bit embarrassing for Mick.
I think it might be time to retire Mick, for the benefit of the team. With guys like Watt coming through and Hilton attempting to make the list, it might be time to let the great man go and give the young guys a shot.
Harsh yes, but for the better of the team, it might just have to be done. He can then rest his tired body and take his place in Roo history.
Tough decisions must be made this year for the team to go foward, Mick is the first test.

In trouble

Will be delisted to get Duck onto the veterans list, but SHOULD be picked up in the draft and put on a one year performance based contract, has still got a bit to offer!

Strap up those hammies and fire him out there for one more go (just for old times sake!)

Cheers

Gonzo

Get stuffed. U wouldn't dare delist him and then repick him. I say 1 more year and cope with Carey on out list. either that or let him retire, entirely he's own choice.

Its a tough one. I would say keep on the list, make him do the training and soon as the hammy goes again..

Thanks Mick and promote a rookie. What is thier to loose. Mick will probably agree its time to retire. It must be hard to retire. I mean where else can you earn 100 to 300 a year, thats a year not 5 or 10 years. You would hang on as long as you can.

Good call Gonzo... Carey has to be on the Vet's list... would any other club pick Mick up???

Being the great icon that he is - I would hope that the decision to retire would be his own and not made for him by the club. I wouldn't mind him playing on another year perhaps on a performance based contract?? Definitely wouldn't want to see him play for another club.

On another note, can't you have two players on the veteren's list??

I hope the club gives Martyn the benefit of the doubt when chop-time comes an a few weeks, and give him an opportunity to do a pre-season. If it is doubtful that he can be at all effective next year, by all means ask him to retire.
At the moment I don't think Hilton, McCartney and Watt can do jobs on #1 forwards on a regular basis, so let's wait until it is just about beyond doubt that Mick is gone, before retiring him.

Good call Darky.

Real conundrum here. The thought of delisting/redrafting Micky makes me sick in its potential humiliation.. but for the good of the entire club Carey's imminent move to the Vet list clears the way to add 1 or 2 experienced players or could aid in rolling over any young guns on the list a year early (eg Teague, Makepeace, Harvey etc).

As for playing ability, Micky makes a good point in that hammies can strike down players of any age - so have Micky's shortcomings been necessarily age related or just recurrences of the same unhealed injury? It's easy to underestimate Mick's footy nous or talent until you watch a younger, fitter player like Shannon Watt get towelled by the 3rd forward.. Or watch McCartney try to fill the gap in defence as 'the man'. And pace can be overstated in footy - occasionally you'll get open sprints where the fullback is caught on but in times of congestion and one out situations Mick is still worth his weight in gold.

Keep - conditionally.
